The dreaded leaking and cracked rear window frame

Well it finally happened the rear window frame has cracked and leaking bad so i make an appointment with the dealer ( Merrick Ram,Jeep,Dodge on long island) that i bought the truck from new 2 years ago now has 21,000 miles and i have the 8 year 85,000 mile extended bumper to bumper platinum to boot. I first noticed the leak and sealed the rear brake light with electrical tape and still leaked bad then i taped the top edge of the glass and bingo no more leak and dried out the seat and carpet. the dealer calls me today and says the leak was the third brake light so i mentioned the window frame crack again and they made out like this is the first time they have heard of it ( i know of 5 people with the same truck and 3 had the rear window replaced and the other 2 have their fingers crossed). the service manager said the the plastic that is cracked is only a trim piece and replacing it would not be covered under warranty. so after some attitude i will pick the truck up tomorrow and take up the fight with FCA but i dont expect much because they never got back to me the last time. Mine was replace by the dealer, now I find out that the replacement is cracked also and I have a leak.
Taking it Baca to the dealer and see what happened since I'm already over the 36000 miles.

I'd say that it's the same problem reported under warranty, and as yet still unresolved.

Don't forget, there is a class-action lawsuit for this fiasco.

now my rear window
defogger doesnt work, fuse is good, unreal 56k 2019 BH 5.7 window replaced twice so far from window frame
cracks ues the two new replacements yea your reading that correctly im on my 3rd window no leaks but no defogger..it was working up until last month cant be the newest window..

There is a good possibility that one of the defroster tabs has broken off due to a crappy solder joint.

It has rained alot the past 2 days and leak is progressively getting worse. I stumbled onto this forum and just reached out to Ram cares. Hoping they can get this taken care of.

No, I asked that question from Mopar directly, and there is zero Mopar warranties that will cover this after the basic 3 year/ 36K warranty.

Even Maximum care won't cover it, but there could be a 3rd party non-Mopar that could cover something like this.

If mine eventually cracks, I have a 2019 by the way, I won't replace it. Since I find the repair rather invasive and a good chance they are just going to screw it up, and there is no guarantee the replacement won't crack either. I rather do the sealant fix, cheap and simple.

Windshields get replaced all the time, it’s a well developed trade. If you have A/C, would you consider a solid rear window? That’s my plan.

True on the windshield process, but this isn't the same thing. A windshield can be done in 30 minutes while you go shopping at Walmart by some mobile guy in a Tacoma for $300-$500. Even some insurance companies cover the cost at 100% depending on what state you live in.

The rear window process cost much more than a windshield to replace, the rear interior has to be removed to access the glass, the process usually takes a full day or more at the dealership level.

It terms of cost and time, the rear window is much more. I would definitely take a new solid window since I never use the slider, but there are a few members that stated the non-slider isn't immune to cracking.

I have a '19 1500 with the cracked frame. Its going in next week. I have over 40K miles. No issue. I do have an extended factory warranty but this is a TSB. Not a warranty issue.?

It would have beeen covered under the original factory 3/36 warranty, but likely is not covered under your extended warranty.

I fixed mine for $15 bucks painters tape and a tube of caulk. No more leaks!

That’s absolute bull$hit. RAM knows this is an issue with these windows. It should be covered under a manufacturer backed extended warranty considering how poorly they’ve addressed this. Especially for anyone who initially has a warranty claim for it under the factory warranty.

Ford has Customer Satisfaction Programs for their issues and routinely extends warranty on a known issues on their trucks - sometimes to 10 years - if feels like this would be an ideal candidate for a program like this.

That’s absolute bull$hit. RAM knows this is an issue with these windows. It should be covered under a manufacturer backed extended warranty considering how poorly they’ve addressed this. Especially for anyone who initially has a warranty claim for it under the factory warranty.

Cost.

For reference - wife's 2017 F150 - 69k miles, past power train warranty, very common 3.5 Ecoboost CAM phasers cold start rattle which (supposedly) doesn't impact engine reliability or longetivity but nonetheless got repaired (more than a day of labor + parts) completely free based on that program.
Ramcares people probably have good intentions but they don't make financial decisions on a higher level - which program like this would require - some sort of corporate approval - for them only thing that counts is return on investment so clearly they don't see this as big enough deal that will result in loss of customers. Little sad.

Speaking to the choir my friend, if it wasn't for the big discount I got on my Maxcare warranty from Granger, I would have never gotten the extended warranty.
