Steering Gear Box Back Ordered

Folks I need some help. I was in an accident in July, and had to have my truck towed to the nearest dealership. The people at the collision center determined that the truck needed a new steering gear and that it would be delivered on August 24th. I called again today and was told that the part would not be available until November because it is back ordered and that there was nothing that could be done, meaning that I would be without my vehicle for around 5 months. It seems like there would be several options, and guess I am just looking for some validation of my thoughts.

1. See if another dealership has the part available.

2. Take the part off of a truck that is currently in inventory and put it on mine.

3.Provide me with a loaner vehicle

Do these options seem unreasonable? Has anyone else had a similar experience? Is this typically how RAM treats their customers?

I have already contacted Chrysler and opened up a case with them; just looking for opinions, insight and/or any help, because I have no idea what to do.

1) very reasonable

2) not at all reasonable

3) moderately reasonable, however, your insurance or the insurance of the person will pay for a rental.

Have you called other dealerships to see if you can find the part? Maybe see if @RamCares can help?

I'm just writing to agree with @spaightlabs - this issue is akin to you having cracked the screen on your iphone as you walk out the store; you'll have to get back in line to get a part. That's how all (large) companies treat their customers - it wasn't their fault that the part broke and unfortunately demand > supply at the moment.

Now if this was an under-warranty failure and replacement couldn't be done in a reasonable time, then I'd be asking for a loaner + quick replacement

When I had my Jeep, and the water pump went out and would take 4-6 weeks to get the part, they put me in another Grand Cherokee as a loaner. Part got in around 3 weeks, I messaged the Jeep Forum's equivalent to RamCares which sped things up - so don't think that's a pointless endeavor to message them. I would insist on a loaner at the very least, and keep RC in the loop.
