So far disappointed with 5.7 etorque mileage, but how much does it really cost???

My last truck was a 2016 F150 Super crew, lariat 2.7 twin turbo. Similar sized to my Laramie Longhorn, similar performance got 19MPG.

My Laramie Longhorn has me running for gas more often, I'm getting about 16MPG. I wish I had the bigger tank!

So, at what cost? I do about 12K miles per year. At $3 per gallon

16Mpg = 750 gallons per yr $2140 per year

19Mpg = 632 gallons per yr $ 1800

2140-1800= $340 extra per year. Several ways to look at this...

Me: Bummer $340 extra per year, $28 per month.

My wife: No big deal $340 per year is only a 16% increase in fuel cost.

My kids: Shut up! You drive a $69k truck and you are going to ***** about $2140 in gas, only 3% of the cost of the vehicle.

Who is right?

If $340 over an entire year is that big of a deal to you, go back to the 2.7 ecoboost or option the 3.6 pentastar. Both have less horsepower, less tow capacity, and sound like lawn mowers. They also typically have lower resale value then their higher power, more premium engine siblings.

If you're paying interest on a loan for your truck, you're losing a lot more $ that way, so you're kids may have a point as well.

16-17 MPG is about exactly what i would expect your truck to get on AVG.

My advice- Don’t look at the total cost when you fill up, turn off the mpg screen, press the pedal on the right hard - you’ll enjoy the trip, get the 33 gallon tank.

Then all is right and you’ll be smiling!

I wish that were true, but 16-17-18 is where the bell curve on the 5.7 etorque is going to land.

2014-2018 Ram 5.7 averages about 15.5 real world hand calculated (mine is currently 14.8). IF etorque is a 10% improvement, that's 17. But not everyone will get 17. Depending on location, driving habits, fuel, truck configuration, city vs hwy....16 is within the range i would expect.

2.7TT is an efficient engine for commuting.

Rocked one for 1,500+ miles for a loaner and had 21-22MPG average combined. Mostly highway, but still. Same commute in the 5.7 I'm getting over 19mpg on average, combined, in the Ram.
Not shocked the MPG difference between the 5.7 and the 2.7TT sides with the smaller engine.

The wife and kids are right.
It's 28 bucks more a month. That's relatively nothing. I mean, you did spend a hefty amount for a truck, and you are falling in-between the city and hwy MPG averages.

2015 2.7TT MPG was
18 city/ 23 hwy

2019 Ram 4x4 MPG is
15city/21hwy*


*3.21 gearing IIRC

Kids: Ask them why the 340$ increase in iphone prices the last few years didn't deter them from getting a flip phone.

Would I like to play the Frozen door-latch game all winter again (check that thread out on the F150 forum, it's up to 131 pages), replace the 3rd pano-roof from being jammed again, have inoperable window washers and IWE on the fritz etc -- all with only 26k miles? F-NO! I'd take 10MPGs and still smile. This vehicle has left me with only one regret so far, that I wasted 2.5 years in the F150. Here's to hoping that stays the same...and it won't be MPGs that change that.

Love my RAM, but intentionally passed on eTorque. It's not a true eco-hybrid
Seems like still 9p% marketing / 10% performance and fuel economy efficiency.

Great budding idea. Will surely be impressive as it evolves over the next several iterations.

I had zero problems with my F-150. So far at 4,000 miles my ram is going to need new calipers and pads and there is a problem with the 12 in touch screen - disappearing song info.

i'd kill for 16. my current tank, 3rd tank since purchased, it slowly working it way down to 10.5 mph.

i expected a mph hit. i didn't expect a 33% drop off the sticker numbers.

Just coming up to 5,000 miles on my Rebel Etorque.

Around town (we live in a very hilly area) mid 14s. Out on the highway getting 17-18 mpg. Best I could squeeze out driving like a granny (highway) was 19.6.

My previous truck 2016 TRD Offroad 4WD Taco. Mid 16s around town. Highway 20.

Would I go back to the TACO --Hello No

I would ask. What truck looks better? What truck pulls better? What truck rides better and what truck doesn’t sound like a pissed off weed eater when you get into it. I spend more than 340.00 on coffee a year. I’d keep this truck even if it got 10mpg.

I agree, I came from a ecoboost too. Was in a hemi ram before that one. Theres a reason I'm back....

I will say this about the f150, the performance and mpg is very impressive.
