Road noise- interior

Hi Bigtone. I also typically drive with the rear seats up and tool bags on the floor. From the drivers position there is a noticeable amount of road noise coming from the passenger side rear seat area. I recently had the brake pedal recall done and had the dealer install (no labor charge) the horizontal bed to cab seal. It is quieter now and I believe it is worth the $22 I paid for it.
Thanks for the info, I think I’ll order one. I thoughtI saw the part number on a post here somewhere.

Here it is.

I bought one of those seals months ago when we were all discussing them on this forum.

I never installed it though.

Someone had mentioned that they thought the possible reason it was deleted from production was that debris could accumulate between the bed and cab wall with the seal in place. I also heard that possibly snow could build up there as well. Because of that, I was afraid to have it installed.

The road noise in my truck sounds like it is coming from the rear passenger seat area, just like yours! It is quite annoying in an otherwise quiet truck.

Do you notice a noise reduction at all speeds?

I debated the strip as well, and ultimately decided against it. It's a $20 part to us, so it's probably pennies to FCA - they deleted it for a reason in my opinion. I'd rather have the noise, than have grit and dirt get rubbed into the lower portion of the cab by that strip, and kick-start some rust in a hard to reach spot.

Try this next time you hear the road noise - turn on the air recirculate feature. I've noticed things get quieter as air stops flowing through the truck, as I assume those vents at the rear of the cab close in this condition.

I tried selecting recirc and it did quiet down some. Which tells me it is thru the cab vents. With the back seat down, it is very quiet. Like the test drive when the seat was down. I'm not so sure about the seal causing a problem, I'm pretty sure there was one on my 2014 and my 2010 rams, and there were no issues when I traded them after about 4 years.

Something I was told by my dealership and ram care specialist working my case. Even though the Hemi comes with ANC each trim level as it goes up improves the quality of the ANC and lowers the road noise level more. So with the Laramie trim you have a lower quality/ability ANC than the Laramie Longhorn...limited... and any higher trims. Now I’m wishing I would have paid the extra for the Laramie Longhorn which was dead quiet when I test drove it compared to my Laramie.

Sorry, but I'm calling BS on that one. The ANC is controlled solely by the amp. The amp is the same among all trims depending on what sound system you have. There are three variations, four if you count those that don't have ANC. You have the base 6 speaker system (with or without ANC), the Alpine system, and the HK system. The amp for a Laramie with a HK system is the same as a Limited with the HK system. A Big Horn with the Alpine system has the same amp as a Laramie with the Alpine system.

Now, they could add more sound deadening material based on trim level, but I can't verify that one. There are just so many variables and poor quality control. Some members here have had Limited or Longhorns with severe road noise, while some members have Big Horns that are dead quiet. That excuse really sounds like a cop-out from RAM because they can't figure out what it is to fix it.

If there is any evidence suggesting otherwise I am open to hear it, but this seems highly unlikely.

Ohhhh I agree with you. Just passing on what I was told and letting everyone else have a good laugh. I’m so fed up right now. I love my truck but if I wasn’t only 5 months into it I’d trade it back in tomorrow. I do have the 12” HK system just as an FYI.

Yeah I'd have to think the ANC escalation claim is bogus as well. Increased damping materials... Maybe.

Are you having problems with the ANC acting up as well?

I notice a reduction mainly above 35MPH.

That was my reasoning as well. Not sure what I'll do yet.

I test drove both a Limited and Longhorn. Both were whisper quiet on the test drive.

I ultimately ordered a Longhorn (which ended up costing about $3,500 more than a compatibility equipped Limited). I had to have the black and new saddle interior color, so I optioned my Longhorn up exactly like the Limited. Expensive way to go about it, but I got what I wanted.

Anyway, my point is that the Longhorn I test drive was whisper quiet. My Longhorn has the rear vent road noise issue.

Our PA roads surely don't help this issue. I'm in NE PA, we have the rough roads and the potholes to contend with. I should have mentioned I have a quad cab, I see you have a crew cab, I'm wondering if the noise issue is different with the crew cabs? As I mentioned, The noise on mine is practically gone with the back seats down. My old '14 and my '10 were both quad cabs and even though I normally drove with the seats up, they had false floor that extended over the hump in the back. I'm thinking that helped contain the noise from being heard in the front, since they were quiet also.

I'm new to the forum. I started a new post on my interior noise in rear cabin. I'm gonna get that rear center seal and install myself. Dealer already replaced entire rear window, and I still have the same noise. Noise is in right rear, and when you look down from the bed, fuel cell takes up room on driver side, but all there is on passenger side is muffler, frame and pavement. I'm thinking that's where the air is coming up. I'll try to keep everyone posted.

Here is another thread that focuses more on the vents in the back. I believe this is where my noise is coming from.

Sound material came in today and going to start taking back a part. Very heavy box.

Also doing the sub surround and vent covers. Here is the post I got the idea from

So many different wind noise threads haha

Going to stick with this thread as title makes more sense.

Took the back seats out and took it for a ride with me in the back to see what was happening.

Took two videos at different speeds and had my better half inable and disable the recirculating aspect if the climate system.

This is for sure the area where all the road noise is coming in for me and probably making it worse with the sub keeping the carpet away as well as letting it through the carpet cuts for the sub.

Going to seal off the sub and fabricate a cover for the vents as well as put sound material on the wall. The sound material will have little impact on road noise but I purchased it and will put it on anyway.

Video at 30-40 mph

Video at 75 mph

Will edit with progress

Looking forward to the progress. Thanks for doing this!

Sound material installed. Have enough left over to do the doors at a later time. My idea about vent covers didn't work out and need try something else.

Holy Cow... I have a quieter truck again!

An added bonus it feels like I added another sub! Will need to turn the bass down in the EQ... maybe

I'm wondering if the flaps in the vents get more pliable over time and open easier as time goes by. I don't remember my truck having so much road noise when I bought it. Feels new again!

Will put a write up together with pics probably tomorrow.
