Recall: Tailgates coming open

On a serious note, I'm waiting for that recall notice. I have a few scratches from it hitting the wall, I now park closer to the vinyl fence.

I've more and more been needing to slam my tailgate just to be sure. It's opened twice while driving luckily both times in my parking lot and also I do have the tailgate warning message that pops up. It's also notified me the tailgate was open several times, even when it wasn't open, so I would get out and re-slam it.

Even bigger issue, it's opened a few times when parked. No good because I trust the tailgate and the Retrax to protect $thousands of equipment inside. It's opened once at my work and 2 or 3 times at home, when parked and at random times.

Two of those times, I heard it hit the wall because that wall in the picture is outside my bedroom. One of those times it opened on its own with the battery disconnected. I was having an issue with the alarm, so I unplugged the battery and went to bed. About half an hour later, I heard the tailgate pop open and hit the wall.

I just got my recall notice today. Don't look for me to run down to the local dealer.....that shop gets nowhere near my truck.

I feel the same way, but they have to at least inspect it so the recall can be cleared off your VIN.
They shouldn't even have to get in the cab. My dealer's tech just walked out to where I parked it and demonstrated the function, then went back inside to sign-off on the papers.

You should just stand there and stare at the tech with mirrored sunglasses and a scowl on your face with your arms folded while they are looking at your truck.
😡

I haven’t got the recall yet, but I got a notice from carfax that there is an open recall for it on my report

My 2019 Laramie had the tailgate indicator lamp enabled when I bought the truck in August of 2019. It is also on my build sheet and window sticker. When I took it in for service sometime in 2020 they updated software and my tailgate warning was disabled. I don't understand how they can disable something that I paid for on a vehicle that I own without some sort of compensation or notice. It makes no sense to me at all.

still do not see it as unsafe as plenty of vehicles loose crap all the time and they do not issue a recall
When I was little, a sheet of plywood came out of the back of a truck on the freeway. The car in front of us ran over it and it shot up and went into our windshield.

You are picking a really weird stance on this. It doesn’t seem like a complex scenario to see how this could be dangerous.

A month old post. Wow

I just got the recall in my email...my tailgate has never fallen open. Should I even bother with this right now?

You're not obliged to bother with it, but there will be an open recall on your vehicle until you do take care of it.

I haven't gotten the recall yet for mine but like you, I haven't had a problem with it so I'm not going to take it in unless I do have a problem

Take it in just to get the recall marked as completed.

You guys are really fukkin' weird about this recall and having people touch and actually FIX your truck. I mean, I get not wanting someone else to do maintenance or repairs...I've worked on my vehicles my entire life. I'm not even happy about places that have mandatory Valet parking. BUT IT'S A GODDAMN RECALL. They're going to re-position the latch so, um, latches. They're not going to molest your precious truck.

First thing I tell every friend/family member who doesn't work on their own car: Take it to the Dealership. Don't take it to Spiffy Lube, don't get it done at Midas, and unless you have the time and knowledge to form an actual relationship with a trusted mechanic, the dealership is most likely to do a proper by-the-book job....MOST dealerships.

As I've said already, mine has dropped by itself in the middle of the night, twice, and it did some damage to the paint:

I now park in front of the vinyl fence, just in case. And yes, I do have to back up this much so my nose isn't in the sidewalk.

I've also had it pop open while driving (luckily, I was still in my work parking lot and I got a warning on the dash. I keep at least $5,000 in tools locked inside, and there's a reason I got a good, secure bed cover, pretty worthless if the tailgate won't stay closed, let alone if they fall out when I make a turn.

Bro, what world do you live in.

Someone here just had their TRX STOLEN from the dealership and now they don't even have a vehicle to drive.
I have had vehicles get into accidents requiring body work on an otherwise perfect condition car while sitting in the dealership lots waiting for parts.
I have also had dealerships damaged unrelated items like destroying the clearcoat on all 4 rims when just getting snow tires put on.
My first oil change in my oil truck the dealership put the wrong oil in (requires 0w20, they put 5w30 in, and yes it says it on the cap).

You're weird if you think everyone that works at a dealership does a good job. No place is perfect and no those were all at different dealerships above.

I have the MFT tailgate and I needed the driver side tailgate adjusted as it wasn't clicking open and it would come flying in and hit me when the wind blew. My local dealership (in a major city of the state) refused the work claiming they don't work on "trucks like mine". The tech came out and said he has never even seen the MFT before let alone worked on it. He said he would need to take the entire thing apart to see how\if he can fix it as he didn't know how it worked.

I spent 30 minutes and 6 washers later it was adjusted and works great.

But keep living in whatever world you are in.

I don't hold everyone (or every dealership) to the same standard, but yes, most service centers AT the dealerships are going to be a cut above taking a gamble at some other shop (chain or mom&pop).

There are a few indy shops that I trust when the job is either too involved or too time-prohibitive, but those relationships are formed by actually knowing the guy who touches my cars, often shops that I can hang around with friends. If I'm going to take a gamble on someone who's going to remember to put the oil cap back on or to actually use the right pad clips, I'd still place my bet with the dealership's service dept, which is the same place I go when I buy OEM parts.

So yea, I'm going to get the recall done, I'm going to hold them to the damage that's already been done, and I'm going to hold them to stand by their work.

But keep living in whatever world you are in.

You took my line.
There are some paranoid MFs on here.

Sometimes its not paranoid people if it actually happens to them.
It really depends on what part of the country and the quality of the employees in the area for any kind of job. Out in my area you need to essentially assume the worst. I have the dealerships that all charged 5-25k over MSRP for new vehicles during and after covid's peak to put it in more perspective.

Mom and pop shops are generally the best around here but they are a little hard to find and even that is a gamble. I do agree to avoid chain brands, they can be terrible but will still exist because of the name. I have a Firestone nearby that I only allow a single tech to work on my cars\trucks (just for tires anyways).

Like others I went to the dealership for tires once, and I ended up getting all 4 of my rims refinished (poorly) and then having refurbished wheels getting purchased to replace the ones the dealership damaged. While it was sitting between refinishes they hit the front and rear bumpers and they both needed to be repainted. The front bumpers paint never stuck, even after 3 separate paint jobs (at the dealerships body shop of choice) it looked like someone shot it with a BB gun all over with the yellow plastic bumper showing next to the black paint of the rest of the car.

I can't ignore stuff like this when it happens to me it's not being paranoid, I purposely went to the dealership so they wouldn't screw up my wheels and I ended up getting shafted.
