Rear window surround crack.

That sucks, sorry you have to deal with that. Makes me wonder if it's a question of "when", not "if" they are all going to crack. The vendor who makes these windows also makes them for GM, they are also an issue on the current Silverado/Sierra trucks.

Yup. Thanks. I’ve read all about it here. I thought I was in the clear after putting that bigger seal on. I’ve been checking for cracks and nothing until last Friday when I noticed it and it was pouring out.

What I don’t understand is why it starts to leak after it cracks. The seal around the window seems fine up to that point unless the plastic trim is integrated more into the window that I can’t see. I could not really tell from the pics I’ve seen on here either.

I think a good part of the window is a plastic frame, the part you see cracked is just an extension of the main inner structure that reaches deep within the frame and beyond any seal.

That makes sense. Now what’s odd is I tried to take a pic of the crack today and it’s damn near invisible. I could see it slightly above the ledge near the headliner somewhat but nowhere else like I could the other day.

He’s right the slider frame is sealed to the window and thus when installed the slider frame is sealed to the truck and when it cracks the water seeps in between the slider frame and window. My headliner never got wet when mine started to drip.

My cracks got worse over time. Initially when I parked on level ground they were almost invisible and you wouldn't know they were there unless you looked really close. If you parked on an uneven surface and the suspension articulated and "twisted" the truck a bit the crack was very noticeable.

After awhile the first crack was noticeable no matter how I parked but the second one didn't get as bad before I had it replaced so it was barely noticeable on flat ground.

When I took it to the dealership I made it a point to park unevenly so that it was easy for them to see the defect.

Thanks for all of the replies. I’m planning on taking it in when the dealership has a loaner available. They said they’ll call to set up an appointment.

So I was driving with family in the rain the other day and was told by my passenger the rear window was leaking. I take the truck in and they scheduled an appointment. While I was looking at it I noticed a crack in the top plastic window surround called the service advisor who said he thought it was supposed to be like that. I go see a friends and notice not crack. Took the truck back in today and the parts manager then comes looks at it and says oh yeah that’s not normal. And we will probably have to order an entire new rear window. What is going on with the quality control with Ram these days.
I have the two cracks In my window as well i just noticed mine the other day cleaning the window I thought it was some kind of seem but water started leaking on mine as well after a car wash I have 1500 2019 longhorn to mine into dealership tried to say same things from I dont see it to it's a seem to now I be waiting to hear from dodge for over a month you guys still haven't gotten back to the dealership and that's just the start I have had so many issues with my truck it is sickening TBH anybody know how to direct msg ram customer care on this site?

The dealership owes you a rental for warranty work under the basic warranty (bumper 2 bumper). If they don't have one in their dealership fleet (they call it a 'loaner' but it is really a rental as they charge FCA for each day that you are driving it) then they should be sending you to a nearby rental car agency like Enterprise to put you in one. My dealership has a small fleet of rental/loaners but if they are out they send you to Enterprise and pay for your rental. Either way FCA is getting the bill so it should not be an issue.

Thanks for the reply. The dealer I go through has a few loaners/ rentals. I’ve been through the process when my transmission was replaced in my 2017 Charger at 6,700 miles.

This is the only dealer around me that offers loaners, otherwise ur on ur own.

Thanks. I’ll keep that in mind.

This is a very interesting find..... This would imply the Cab is not staying in rack when say you jack up one corner of the truck?? I know the cabs have changed in the 5th gen truck and wander if this was not tested out in the development of the truck???? Pretty easy to measure if you remove the window, make a template and hold it in the hole while someone jacks up one corner at a time. It the window hole should NOT move or get out of square. If it does then it is relying on the window frame/ glue and window to keep it in rack. That would not be good at all. This would be in a controlled situation just think of the stress from off roading??? Should of made a pocket and used a rubber gasket for the back window if that is the case or designed the cab with more support.

Has anyone with the newer model window replacement had issues since work was done? I just had mine replaced last week, so far so good from the original leak location (crack in the surround frame). Of course, I managed to pick up a third brake light leak in the process. I did the M-D auto/marine weatherstripping around the brake light that others on this forum have done, we'll see how it goes. Has anyone found a tried and true way to test the third brake light leak? I hit it with a hose for a few minutes and nothing came through, curious if there's a sweet spot to replicate the actual issue.

If you installed the weatherstrip correctly, your leak from the light should be solved. IF it still leaks slightly, people have found the screws for the light leaking. In that case, put some silicone around the screw heads and the leak should be 100% solved. I used the weather strip and still had a very slight leak. I siliconed the screws and so far all is well.

Did you have the small plastic washers on the screws as well?

Just over 2 months so far on the new window with no issues. Fingers crossed.

I put a dab of clear RTV on the screw holes in the CHSML (I have the plastic washers), waited until it started to tack up, then installed the light. I didn't have any leak issues but I did the weatherstrip seal and the silicone to make sure I never do.

Not sure what model they put in, but I have had no issues since the second time it went in for a leak. (1st Window cracked > replaced / second 3rd brake light) around 8k miles and 8 months, with a TON of rain.. both while parked and while driving. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Yes I do. They still tend to leak. So after I did the weather strip, I put clear silicone in the screw holes on the brake light and installed the screws. No leaks here. Just hoping I don’t get the dreaded frame crack, I don’t want anyone replacing the window but I’m slightly OCD and I don’t want all the stuff removed and the window replaced etc.
