Ram Introduces New Multi-function Tailgate In Chicago:

Thanks for that input, J.

IIUC the Hellcat uses a twin-screw type supercharger, which, different from turbo's, don't need to be rev'd high to create torque. Now that you mention it, I can see it being a good fit for a work truck and not just for a high performance car.

Btw "idiot" is the correct description for that guy :geek:

Our sources which have a VERY good track record, both on our sites and previously for years on other Mopar sites literally can't sit through one of those videos and/or start laughing out loud when they see them. It's too bad so many people have been sucked in to believe all the lies and the only things he has been right about are things that he's read elsewhere and then paraded that information as his own.

I had no idea, J. If he's like that I don't even want to mention the name lest people wander over there and get bad info. I like the style and tempo here much better, for sure; much more even keeled and solid. That much is plainly obvious.

This tailgate info may seem like a simple thing but it lays the groundwork for me, answers a big question, and allows a new buyer like me to be in a better position to plan the purchase. So yeah; it's not a simple thing it's a big thing and I really do appreciate this data.

Did you just give us another tidbit; is there an all new 7.0 L gas engine in the works?

https://5thgenrams.com/exclusive-ram-rebel-trx-engine-lineup-confirmed/ Posted almost a year ago before we knew about the Rebel TR. That said we do have some news concerning the TR and 7.0 coming soon.

Several station wagons built by many automakers of the 60's and 70's had tailgates that hinged both directions to let kiddos into the 9 passenger rear facing seats. The engineering can't be that tough with computer aids available today.
And doesn’t every Honda Ridgeline have a dual-hinged tailgate?

Q2 is a three-month window! Wish there was more clarity on it from FCA. Maybe we'll get that today at the Chicago show. The question is: buy my truck this weekend or wait and have my dealer check daily to see when he can add it as a build option, build it, and then wait another 6-10 weeks...

Also no more option to add eTorque, Harman Kardon/premium leather to the Rebel as of yesterday, per local dealer's inability to select them as options on a custom build.

no split the whole thing swings left. not really a pickup anyway.
In other words, yes...it has a dual-hinged tailgate. I realize it's not split, but it's really not big enough to justify a split on that little car/truck.

Actually the ridgeline is the only midsize to have at least 48" between the rear wheel wells in the bed...oddly enough.

Too bad it looks like a minivan and rides crappy loaded.

Recent motortend review...Tacoma last, then Ranger, then Ridgeline, then colorado.

I probably agree with their assessment of that class. Good evidence that sales don't always follow the "best" vehicle in the segment

We will be at the Chicago Auto Show media days this week and will have a chance to ask the engineering team some questions. … Let us know if there's anything you guys would like to know and we will see what we can dig up.

@JaredB:
Thank you for the offer for us to ask questions, much appreciated. I'd bet that someone else already asked these of you, and if they have, I apologize for repeating them here, but at the moment I don't have time to read this entire 4-page thread. Here are my two questions:
.
(1) When will the 2019 1500 have the 6'4" Ram Box option?
.
(2) Can you find out what they did to the Ecodiesel block/crank/etc. to address the long-known weakness in the Ecodiesel's bottom end?
.
Thanks!
.

Looks like GM spent a bunch of money only to be outdone before they sold anything. Bet there will be a bunch of GM trucks running around in 5 years with big dent in tailgate where trailer ball hit it.

So, I've got all the part numbers for all the components that make up the multifunction tailgate assembly, and I'm looking at ordering them all as soon as the parts order bank opens up, which is scheduled for March 23rd, at least here in Canada.
But, and this is a huge one, I wonder how they're facilitating the electrical features of the tailgate; the tailgate locking, the tailgate release, and the camera? The only thing that I can think of is they have all the electrical running through the lower left hand corner of the 60%(left-hand) side of the tailgate, and at that point they've left enough slack in the harness such that it doesn't either bind, or stretch, during either the 'barn door' use, or the dropping tailgate section.

That's Theory# 1, Theory# 2 is for a set of contacts that make or break, depending on the action of the tailgate's left-hand section.

In trying to get some more information on this, was anybody on the Forum at the unveiling in Chicago? Any input will be greatly appreciated.

I'd put money on theory 1, rotating and momentary style contacts would be a warranty nightmare, and sending a camera signal down a contact like that no way.

5thGenRams co-editor @redriderbob was at the reveal today and asked whether the tailgate could be retrofit, this is what he was told.

"So the tailgate won't retrofit because of the of the electrical system for the locking mechanism being different"

I have the wiring diagram for the multifunction tailgate, but can't get it to post here. The wiring comes out of the same spot on the truck as the normal tailgate and runs down a channel mounted on the truck and into the larger portion of the tailgate (drivers side) near the lower hinge. The channel moves when you open it like a normal tailgate but stays in place when you open it like a door. The connectors "connecting" the truck and tailgate are most likely the same but there is probably no empty spots, which our trucks have plenty of. From what I can tell there is what looks like 5-6 different locks, 3 plugs that go to the handle, and some sort of a module inside of the tailgate. So you would definitely need a new tailgate harness, as for the truck side harness its still up in the air. An easy way to check is to crawl under the back of the truck and see if there is more wires going into the connector from the truck than there are coming out of the connector going into the tailgate, if there is more wires on the truck side then the truck will most likely only need a flash from the dealer for the tailgate functions to be activated.

My guess is that it could be done, likely with swapping the tailgate harness as you said. I guess we will have to wait and see until someone gives it a try.

Regardless, you following up on my (our) request is much appreciated.

The new tailgate looks very impressive to me as far as the engineering goes.

However, personally not sure I would benefit much from it, and also not
sure I would like looking at the cut/split line in my tailgate.

But still engineering wise this is much better than the new GM tailgate,
and that is coming from someone driving GM for the last 30 plus years.
