New Tailgate Design & Center Step Offer More Functionality Than Ever Before...

Back in December, our spy photographers caught multiple 2019 Ram 1500 running around the Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) Auburn Hills, Michigan campus with black vinyl camouflage covering the pickup box. Over the past few years, several prototypes of the tailgate had been spotted in various stages of development. Now, Ram has pulled back the covers showing us this new tailgate design.

Ram is known for their pickups offering innovative cargo management designs, and the new Multi-function Tailgate adds to Ram’s offerings. The new Multi-function Tailgate design consists of a 60/40 split design. It will offer the functionality of a typical pickup tailgate. However, it will also add new swing-away functionality.

The dual side-hinged tailgate doors offer enhanced access to the interior of the pickup box. When the tailgate is up, the side-hinged doors are independent and can make curbside loading easier than ever before. The Multi-function Tailgate has four configurations; open flat, open left door only, open right door only and open both doors.

The new tailgate also allows those using the pickup box to get a much greater reach inside the box without having to reach over the tailgate. The Multi-function Tailgate also allows Ram Truck owners easier ability to step up into the box. Access into the bed can be further enhanced with a new retractable center-mounted step option. This new tailgate will come with the factory spray-in bed liner already equipped.

“The Ram Multi-function Tailgate is intuitive to operate, and owners will find it immediately useful,” said Reid Bigland, Head of Ram Brand – FCA. “Combined with Ram’s class-exclusive RamBox feature and new tailgate step, we’re taking Ram’s cargo management and storage to the next level.”

With each door opening a total of 88-degrees, the new Multi-function Tailgate is trailer-friendly and does not require the hitch or the trailer to be removed to access it, unlike the GMC MultiPro tailgate on the 2019 GMC Sierra 1500. The Multi-function Tailgate retains all of the traditional tailgate’s capability and has a 2,000-lb. load rating.

With options like the popular RamBox system which offers versatile, weatherproof, lockable, illuminated and drainable storage bins built into the bed rails that feature a handy 115-volt, 400-watt outlet and can be available with a pickup bed divider/two-foot bed extender and cargo rail system with four sliding, adjustable cleats. This new feature makes the 2019 Ram 1500, the most functional pickup on the market.

Compared to GMC’s MultiPro Tailgate option which is only available on the top tier 2019 GMC Sierra 1500 trim levels, the Ram Multi-function Tailgate is available on all seven 2019 Ram 1500 trim levels (Tradesman, Big Horn/Lone Star, Laramie, Rebel, Canadian-Sport, Laramie Longhorn and Limited). Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price is $995 U.S. for the Multi-function Tailgate. The new optional center step is additional $295 U.S. and both will be available in the second-quarter of 2019.

It's a good blow to GM and I see it being a better option of the two. I'm old fashion and wouldn't see this as something I'd use a lot. I think this is a great option for folks who utilize the bed on a regular basis. I have a hard tonneau cover on mine. I also bought the sport (Canadian edition) model so it's all about the look. The line down the tailgate for me personally would bother me. All in all though, Ram did a great job here and stuck it to the competitors in my view.

Well, now. I guess the question that remains unanswered is - can that tailgate be retrofit into existing 2019 Rams?
'Cause I would do it.

Steve
Well, originally I felt it wouldn't be...but it appears the hinging mechanism is attached to the tailgate...it drops with the tailgate and appears to usethe regular latch...and it doesnt seem to affect the bedside at all.

Looks like it might just be a tailgate swap...waiting for more pics.

@Jared B - you mentioned the "two-foot bed extender." Is that coming back or a different flavor for the new tailgate?

This according to Car and Driver...

https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a26146609/ram-1500-tailgate-2019/

"Ram says it's possible to retrofit the new tailgate to an existing 2019 1500 truck, but because it would require replacing the box in addition to the tailgate, it's an impractical proposition likely to cost several thousand dollars (stand-alone beds for the old Ram cost upward of $4000). Pickups with the new tailgate option will be available at dealerships starting in late spring 2019."

I am going to have to get clarification on that. I believe it's probably the same as the current situation where a customer would have to add the lugs themselves to use the divider as a bed extender.

So no word on the slide out ramps?

Nothing about the ramps, I know they were in the early patent drawings but it looks like they didn't make production.

I wonder if the trims with remote tailgate release will A. Still work as they do now and B. Ability to remotely “pop” the swing out doors open?
