Panoramic Sunroof Headliner Noise

The noise just started on mine this weekend, driving me insane going down the road. I can place my hand on the headliner right beside the overhead control panel and even the slightest pressure stops the noise. I gotta get this fixed since I can't always have the HK system loud enough to drown it out.
I've had some rattles in trucks before over the years but something about the location of this one or something is like nails on a chalkboard to me.

I took my truck in this morning for the sunshade krinkling up issue instead of retracting smoothly and properly. We'll see what happens.

Mine has the headliner noise plus the rolling bolt sound in the dash upon accelerating or decelerating to a stop.

Frankly, I'm afraid to let the dealer touch either noise for fear they'll RIP and tear things up totally ruining my interior.

I know the feeling. Especially since this is my first RAM truck and have no idea what kind of service I'll get from the dealer. and it's an hour drive to the dealer I got the truck from.

My noise was exactly the same as described by others, and it also was immediately temporarily suppressed by applying hand-pressure to the center or right side of the front of the sunroof opening.
Try really wedging/tuffing some resilient, dense foam in that opening; it has worked for me.
Been test-driving my Limited, noise is now gone. The compressed foam seems to hold the panel snug & still, so no movement (and thus no noise).
No, we should not HAVE to do it, however this is safer & quicker than letting the dealer start yanking the roof panel off, etc.

The rolling bolt is another thing altogether, Chemist......I hate that for you!

Sounds like I'll be raiding the wife's craft room tonight searching for high density foam. Thanks Duane!

Got the truck back tonight. The sunshade motor broke and it damaged the sunshade. The parts are on backorder. Surprise!

They'll get back to me when they get the parts to schedule the repair.

It seems that Ram is so busy building and selling new trucks, there's a shortage on parts availability. I'm shocked. ;)

My noise started when the temps got below 40 degrees, plastic type rattle noise in the front upper console/headliner area. Pulled the upper console down and found a plastic frame assembly that is used to mount the upper console. The frame assembly is hot glued to the backside of headliner. If I grabbed the frame and moved it around with some light force I could duplicate my noise. I packed the area between the headliner and the plastic frame with foam weatherstripping, noise gone.

I went to Home Depot, spent $3 for a bag of black AC insulation foam noodles, and cut one of them into lengths of 3-4". I then separated the headliner from the roof at the velcro attachment points at the front and rear of the sunroof. (It takes a good downward pull to get the velcro to release) I then inserted a noodle next to each velcro attachment point (Far enough back so as not to be seen) and pressed the headliner back into place at each point. I have not heard another rattle since. The silence matches the beauty of the interior...Luxury for the past 1,400 miles.

I have the headliner noise and the rolling bolt in the dash. Has anyone had the dealer look at either? When I take mine in I want to try and lead them down the right path so I don’t get the generic “can’t duplicate the issue” cop out.

Hi JDBob35a and anthprice,
We're very sorry to hear that you are experiencing this noise. Please let us know if you decide to have your dealers look into this concern as we are more than happy to provide and additional layer of assistance to you while your trucks are at your dealers.

Just to give you guys a heads-up, the parts arrived and I took my truck to the dealership on Tues. morning. They called me back on Tues. afternoon to let me know that they have someone looking into it, but they'll need another day. I got a call back on Wed. that they didn't realize how big of a job it would be (headliner removal, A pillar trim, and seat removal), so they need another day. They called on Thurs. and told me that they didn't realize how involved this would be, and needed to remove the windshield, and they'd need the truck into early next week. I picked up a rental on Ram's dime yesterday.

Seems like someone didn't think the sunshade would ever break and didn't plan on making the unit easily serviceable. I'm really concerned that my new truck is being dismantled to this level. We'll see what happens next week. RamCares/Star has been helpful in moving this forward.

Ouch. After all that time, plus rental, guessing the dealer won't want to see you again soon... so maybe they'll apply extra diligence in getting everything buttoned back up.

Thanks for sharing; I think I just scratched sunroof off my order list.

My panoramic sunroof headliner is driving me crazy. The headliner is loose fitting on the front right side.

The left side is tight as can be and noise free. The right side has some play in it, which allows the headliner to tick and click when driving.

The headliner is held in place with industrial pkastic Velcro type fasteners. I have no idea why the right front (passenger) side can move up and down when the fasteners are locked together. It is so annoying. Both top and bottom fastener are in their respectine retainers, but the right side has excessive play to it. I've shoved foam there to place downward pressure against the headliner to try and eliminate the small amount of travel that allows it to make noise. This works for a while then the noise starts to come back.

I've got hour after hour and evening after evening into trying to remedy this. I'm afraid to let the dealer attempt to repair this, because of the "rip and tear, greasy paw print factor".

Has anyone had similar noise from their pano headliner? Has anyone that has had noise, successfully repaired it?

I really haven't had time to enjoy the 3 weeks of ownership of my Longhorn, because of all the squeaks, groans, ticks and rattles. Under 700 miles so far and not off to a good start!

OK, an update, AND an actual answer/solution for this problem!!......
I had posted in January that shoving thick foam up into the gap (between the headliner & the front of the roof) in the center & front right sides had solved the 'itchy' noise (caused by the Aplix clips). As turns-out, the problem never stayed solved for very long, despite shoving multiple pieces of foam up in there in my vain attempt to 'stabilize' the area & stop the noise.
There is now a fresh STAR CASE (#S1923000016), which any RAM Service Technician (apparrantly not the Service Writers) can pull-up for you & also perform without charge.
The fix looks pretty simple & involves placing a piece of tape between the APLIX clip(s) & the metal headliner frame. They do NOT need to remove the headliner; only pull it down some in front.
Of note, my guy states that he will wear actual white gloves, so there will not be a single smudge on my (Frost color) Limited's headliner.
Best of luck, RAM Bros!!

I did this as well with foam rubber a few months ago instead of tape. I shoved it in between the bottom black plastic velcro piece and its metal retainer on the headliner. Those black plastic pieces fit loosely in their retainers.

I slid the hard black plastic square out, then held a square cut piece of foam rubber against its bottom and tightly slid it back in the retainer.

By doing this the clip can no longer rattle around or move in the retainer.

Who the heck ever designed such a crappy fastener system anyway?

They had to know all the clips were loose and going to rattle!

Thanks for the star case number. If mine makes noise again, I'll take it in to the dealer. I spent enough time on that annoying problem already.

The rattle on mine is at the rear of the opening behind my head. Concrete road joints really set it off, and there's plenty of that around here. Can't stand it when I'm driving through the parking garage at work. Rattle, rattle, rattle, rattle....about every 10 feet. Sounds like a plastic rod just bouncing around in there.
