I just received the report from an oil sample I sent in a couple of weeks ago. The comment regarding potassium is interesting as I did require some coolant to top of the reservoir on my last oil change. Hopefully it’s just a coincidence tho.

Blackstone labs will ship you a few kits for free, they don’t take long to come in. I’m in Canada so it took and bit longer, I could be wrong but they might come with prepaid return shipping in the USA.

Yep, return shipping is free in the USA. I was told I could simply place the sample in my mailbox.... I plan to do just that in a couple of weeks when I perform oil change #2 at 18,000 miles.

Thanks for posting you results, it is interesting but at the same time a bit concerning, the viscosity being below average, hopefully the metals are not higher because of the lack of lubrication.
You are after all using the owners manual recommended oil.
I did say this in the past but I am using the dealer recommended oil , Shell Rotella T6, I should send my next sample to the same place you do, that would be interesting to see the comparison.
I work in a mine and they have an in-depth oil analysis program analyzing oils from heavy diesel equipment, gearboxes and hydraulic systems...many oil analysis were ruined or not accurate because of the contamination in the oil samples, so several tradesman and myself have been sent to an oil analysis course, mostly was about how to get the oil and where to get the oil from for a proper sample, it is like forensic science for those guys, everything is in ziplock bags and plastic sealed containers.
Oil samples from gearboxes, engines or hydraulic tanks must never be drawn from the drain plug, it had to be drawn from the reservoir away from the bottom with a small manual vacuum pump using a new clear tube every time, or a pito tube was installed on gearboxes, engine oil reservoirs and hydraulic tanks, it’s a small tube that goes near the center of the reservoir with a quick attachement on the outside to bleed off then get the sample from there.
We had to get rid of all our funnels and oil transfer jugs that were made of galvanized steel because it was contaminating the oil samples.
How do you get your samples? Do they supply instructions on how to get a proper sample?

I’ve been in further contact with the folks at blackstone concerning this oil sample and if they can tell which oil the dealer is actually using. According to the dealer they have been using Pennzoil Platinum Euro 5w40, but the people at blackstone say the levels of magnesium are not what they typically see with pennzoil.

I can send blackstone a virgin sample to compare against to be sure, I’m going to contact my dealer first to double check.

Both pennzoil platinum and rotella T6 are excellent oils and either should work, but FCA has their reasons I guess for sticking with the euro spec oil. I’m assuming that since VM motori is telling them what oil to use.

To extract the sample is used a sterile syringe through the dipstick tube, blackstone sells an extraction device for this purpose.

Cool, I have a new ecodiesel on order. This will be my second. I may be running Amsoil which does not meet the spec either. All for people making their own informed choices.

I buy 6 Blackstone oil analysis kits at a time, so does my account manager. He just turned 275K on his 16 ecodiesel, both all Amsoil, we share a prefered customer account. He had one of those lifetime powertrain warranties. Lost the turbo last week. When they asked for oil change records, he said sure, and here are all the oil analysis reports, replace the turbo.

Gen 3 has been on the market for 18 months now, so some time has passed since we first had the need to investigate this, and now days the "don't use Rotella" argument is just passed along as common knowledge, but if I remember correctly the only time I've ever heard any reasoning behind it came from @RamCares who checked with the engineering team and then simply responded that turbo coking was a concern and also engine pressures on the Gen 3 engine were considerably different and for that reason they decided to switch to API SN oils under the new MS-12991 spec. In addition, the entire emissions system has been reworked and so it's assumed that they're looking for oils with low ash content to protect emissions components.

Now, I will admit that none of those three reasons seemed to make sense to me. Rotella T6 is used in diesel engines with turbos and much higher pressures and has been for many years, and it's also used in the Cummins engines that Ram uses that have very similar emissions systems. So if it's good enough for a 2021 Ram 2500, why isn't it good enough for a 2021 Ram 1500?

But, those are the reasons we were given, and so to protect our warranties I guess that's what we're stuck with until the odometer reaches 100,000 or your personal care meter reaches "don't".

This is for everyone, what are your intervals between oil changes? I've been having them done at 6k using the Pennzoil euro but I don't know if that oil is rated for 10k changes?

My last eco was 7000 with oil analysis always saying I could go longer (amsoil), but really why? New eco on order. The First will be at 1500-2000 depends on the weather. I have seen an oil analysis report on a new eco where the viscosity was low out of range. I will be running Pennzoil at first for warranty, but that second oil change will be done at 5000 miles with an oil analysis to see how it's holding up. I have seen comparisons where Pennzoil Euro seems to be a really good oil, but youtube cannot compete with an oil analysis. They're cheap and then you know for sure. If it comes back good at 5000 I will consider my options.

I am sticking to a 10000km oil change interval. The tbn at my last change was still good showing that I could go further if I needed, but 10000km is far enough for me between changes.

The new owners manuals have the proper oil listed and pennzoil platinum euro is approved for use in light duty diesels, so it should be compatible with all the emissions related stuff.

I highly doubt rotella would cause turbo coming issues as well since it is the #1 diesel oil and has been for many years.

I would assume FCA gets their oil requirements from VM motori which is in Italy so I can see why a euro spec oil would he recommend.

I plan on sending a virgin sample of pennzoil euro 5w40 and rotella 5w40 to blackstone for testing so we can figure out what the differences are.

Yep, and sometimes there are financial agreements between manufacturers and oil or fuel companies. "We recommend _____" in the owners manual because they know it'll sell more of that brand.

Oil analysis on Rotella T6 vs. Pennzoil Euro from an EcoDiesel would be some really amazing data. I hope you really do that.

I will only run the oil that satisfies fca’s warranty requirements so the samples I send in will be virgin oil straight from the bottle. It’s good information for the lab and owners both to have. Knowing what differs in each oil should give us an idea why one is recommended over the other.

FCA’s oil choice for the third gen is the opposite of the second gen where they no longer recommend the pennzoil euro oil. I know it’s not the same engine so things will change.
