I know this is an old thread, but the new 2023 1500 build options are on the website now and the ED is available for the Limited and the 4X4 Laramie.

The ED was available for the first part of '23. That's why it's in the '23 builder. That doesn't mean you can still order one now.

And they probably didn’t want to offer it in ‘23 at all, but didn’t announce the discontinuation in time. If you pull down a copy of the ‘23 user manual and search for ”diesel” you’ll get bupkis.

Yep the new EV crazed ownership killed it quick and would probably like to kill the Cummins if they wouldn't get burned at the stake. Looks they are going to kill all the three ED Hemi & Pentastar in favor of the new 3 liter gasser. The good news is I checked Ram price & build new vehicle locator in the drop down menu. There is 593 new 2023 EDs within 250 miles of me. Probably still some being delivered to dealerships. Plus still new 22s with better pricing. If you want one or got an expired warranty 14-19 nows your chance to trade it in and upgrade.

How many miles on your old EcoDiesel, and how's it doing?
.
How about the other stuff (transmission, air-conditioner, body & frame)?

Just delivered an Airstream to Southaven MS on the way home she turned 905k. Took these a few days ago.

How many sets of tires and brakes have you gone through. Do you keep detailed maintenance logs?

Two sets of four per year. Brakes not often. Tuned I use the turbo brake plus factory TBC trailer brake controller where appropriate. If memory serves me the original brakes went 293k before having a pad break and crumble.

I think we all expect the hemi to be dropped eventually but Ram hasn't actually confirmed that anywhere. The hemi could very well be offered alongside the hurricane for a number of years yet.

And of course, if you want a new half ton diesel there is always the GM 3.0 duramax, it's better in every way than both versions of the ED. The rest of the truck... that's open for debate.

Guy at work just bought the new GM diesel. He wanted a diesel rebel so he got the Z71 Trail Boss chef with the diesel instead. Took it for a rip. Nice motor. Similar to my ED but - different / smoother / quieter. Interior design has greatly improved. Digital dash / infotainment is much better. The outside is still ugly as sin but hey.

The one thing that turned me away from the 3.0 Duramax was the timing belt, it’s a serviceable item and is on the back side of the engine.

I think that's blown out of proportion though. More than likely it lasts up to 200k miles, so doing that once in the lifetime of the truck at a price of $1000 to $2000 for shops that are good at it... minor detail when you spend 50K on a truck. And if your truck lasts 400K+ miles then well thats a minor cost to do that a second time and keep the truck running.

It does change the gas/diesel cost argument slightly in favour of gas. But sometimes you just want a diesel because its a diesel, tows amazing and goes forever on a tank of fuel, lots of low end torque.

Ya I’m not sure what the service interval is, another thing is the wax coating they apply to the frame rather than painting it. I have a buddy with a 2021 sierra and there is already significant rust in some areas of the frame.

I think the new updated engine that came out in 23 has an even longer service interval.

Yes, with the refreshed engine, GM raised the service interval on the oil-pump drive-belt from 150 k miles to 200 k miles.

My son has a 2022 ED 60k miles 3.21 and GDE tuned. So far pretty fantastic motor & truck. He has a Pilot car business averages 33 mpg with a load and is ecstatic about it. We used it to tow a 7k 30' Airstream and was really surprised despite the gearing it had power in spades. I'd still pick the 3.92 because I tow daily but if highway economy is your first priority not only does the 3.21 knock down killer mileage it tows well. Both the updated 2020+ ED and the updated 2023 3.0 Duramax are pretty outstanding. First gen issues resolved.

Both now have aftermarket tuners. EOC or Ecodiesel of Canada & VSE.

GM Max tune
305 HP +50 355
495 TQ +110 605

Ram Max tune
260 +80 340
480 +140 620

That just shows crank max effort. I wouldn't tow or even daily drive on those power levels. The EOC IG site shows 300 WHP & 550 WTQ for the Ram.

As far as basic tow tunes they showed +25 HP +45 TQ for the GM and +40 HP +80 TQ for the Ram. I'm a little surprised the inline 6 is showing more HP & less TQ than the V6. I would expect it to be the other way around. So below is the basic daily driver & tow tune settings. 500+TQ and an 8 or 10 speed really tows a 7 or 8k travel trailer with ease. Until the load gets too big or I think I need to tow too fast the ED always gets 2+ mpg better than my Cummins and 5+ mpg better than the same 1500 and gear Hemi.

GM
330 HP
540 TQ

Ram
300 HP
560 TQ

33MPG WITH a load??

As far as towing and torque, this always reminds me that 2003 was the last year of the Ford 7.3L PowerStroke. At that time, that engine is what powered everything up to and including the F350 dually, towing loads WAY bigger than 7K pounds. In many minds back then, it was the King of towing.

That final iteration of the 7.3L PSD was spec'ed at 525 ft-lbs of torque (and 250 HP, IIRC).

We got it pretty good nowadays.

Pilot car service, lightbar sign flags etc. Load as in oversize load semi truck running 65 mph down the highway with pole for bridges opening & closing lanes controlling traffic etc. He isn't towing or carrying much. At most 100 gallons of diesel tools chains & binders rubber cones etc maybe 1,000 pounds.

Agreed we do have it good. Quiet & smooth 300 HP 560 TQ with an excellent 8 speed vs lound clattery 250 HP 525 TQ 4 speed slosh box or 5 speed stick. And dug that ole truck.

Still. I also have an ED with 3.21. I get something like 24 on the highway. It is hard to believe going a little slower and having a GDE tune would really make 9 MPG difference. Especially with the drag from a light bar, etc..

Is that hand calculated? 2WD, with stock size tires?
