No more diesel.......

There is no way I would say "I couldn't even tell it was there." I could definitely tell it was there when I went to pull away from a stop or to accelerate any other time. However, it did just fine. Not complaining. Just saying.
It's an exaggeration to say that 5,000-9,000lb would go completely unnoticed, but having towed with N/A Gas trucks all my life, I know how much power and acceleration is going to be robbed as with the trailer attached. I also know that I'm mostly dependent on my brakes. Personally, I was shocked how much the Hemi and my Fontier's VQ40 felt nearly identical, despite having more power and more truck with the Hemi. The biggest disappointment was that I thought the 1500 was going to be a big step up from the Frontier.

I'm not going to mistake having a few tons on the back of my EcoDiesel, but when I say I was expecting a big step up, THIS is what I was talking about. There wasn't the bogging and gear-dropping I came to expect with gas. Even with the 3.21, my Eco works its way right up to 8th gear without much fuss. Buttery smooth, quiet, and didn't sacrifice fuel economy. I think I got something crazy like 20mpg with my enclosed trailer on the highway. I also like that diesels have more engine braking, I'm much less reliant on my brakes.

In either case, I feel like the ED was the step-up I was looking for from my mid-size V6 gasser.

Well, that sucks for guys who are keeping them long-term. The gen3 had roughly 5 years of production for us and wrangler guys, and at least 2 of them were in this covid shortage period. So there will be parts scarcity, not just now, but when people need something like a dpf, egr, longblock, etc., in 10 years. There me, maybe some junkyard parts and NOS parts, but it will be nothing like the pre-Covid years. There’s going to be a bunch of people not willing to just get rid of a truck that will end up having to do a conversion. What a mess. Kind of makes me glad I’ll be out of mine soon.

Edit: The ecodiesel is some form is in more countries than the US, but I don’t know the level of parts inter compatibility.

I think they are still going to offer the Ecodiesel in the Gladiator only.

I am a bit dubious that towing with a Frontier is "nearly" identical to towing with a 1500/Hemi.

When I moved from DC area to Columbia, SC, area last year, I towed a very overloaded trailer (with my '19 Hemi/eTorque) the whole way (approximately 500 miles, mostly I-95). The total weight of truck and trailer combined was 17,100 pounds (got the CAT scales receipt to show it). It was sketchy AF, I freely admit. I didn't know how badly over weighted I was until I was already committed. I wouldn't do it again. But, the Hemi did it with no drama at all. I had no trouble maintaining the speed limit, even on the Interstate. The air suspension was maxed out and giving me a warning on the dash display, but it was undamaged and continued to work just fine after the trip. The truck looked level when all hooked up.

I am dubious that a Frontier would have even been able to do that, much less felt "nearly identical" while doing it. OTOH, if you don't tow anything that really taxes a Frontier, then I would expect that towing the same thing with a Hemi would feel like nothing.

No more Diesel for the 1500 Ram, that’s too bad but it got me thinking, the 3rd generation Ecodiesel is their best one so far, well hopefully, and there won’t be performance upgrades from the manufacturer, so it will eliminate the temptation to exchange my truck because I plan on keeping it a long time, I had my first 1996 Dodge Ram for 15 years, my second was a 2011 Ram and kept it for 9 years.

GM did good upgrade to their 3L Duramax Diesel for the 2023 trucks and I would hate to be the owner of the previous generation.

I plan on getting a tune for my truck when the powertrain warranty expires, by that time I am hopeful to find the best tune to improve the mpg.

I’m glad that my wife and I are retired and not having to travel to work because diesel and gasoline here in Northern Ontario Canada is f.ck’n ridiculous it’s $2.39/L for diesel and regular gas is $1.69/L, my tank is 100 litres so it’s $70 more expensive for one tankful of diesel fuel compared to if I was to fill up with regular gasoline.

$10.85 for a gallon of fuel,
$7.67 for a gallon of regular gasoline

In July of 2021 I paid $1.24/L for diesel fuel and gasoline was $1.42/L, those days are gone, bummer!

Everything is getting so expensive, the price of diesel has a huge influence on that, most things are shipped by trucks, trains or ships and of course they mostly run on diesel.

So is the ecodiesel going away or not? It’s still on the site as a 2023 option as of a few minutes ago. I was expecting to see the ecodiesel gone and the hurricane as an option.

I wouldn't put much stock in the Ram site. It still shows that you can order an Ignition Edition TRX. First off, you were never able to order one (they were allocated to dealers), and second, that was a limited edition that finished out in January 2022.

You mean the RAM website that still doesn't have Heavy Duty 2023 Build and Price?

You mean the RAM website that often pops up a survey request that's always closed?

You can't possibly be serious. </sarcasm>

Diesel was never supposed to go away before 23 model year. They said orders will be taken until January.

I keep getting conflicting info on this topic. The option shows on Ram's Build & Price website, but a friend tried to order one at the dealer a month ago and the dealer's ordering app wouldn't let him order one. One person I know who has connections high up at Ram said that EcoDiesel orders had already been shut off in order to meet demand for the January 2023 production shutdown, but another friend quizzed the Ram reps at the Los Angeles Auto Show a few weeks ago, the Ram folks said that one definitely COULD still order an EcoDiesel in a 1500. So I don't know what to think.

I’d put my money on not being able to order one. Articles stated the production would end in January. I’m sure not to long after the 2023 order banks opened the ED was gone. Either tons of people jumped on them or dealers went crazy to get some on their lots. The people at the auto shows are basically sales reps, they likely don’t have a clue what’s really going on. Best bet would be keep an eye on cars.com and other sites like that once the 23s start showing up and maybe you will find one thats similar to what you wanted to order.

Well up here in the great white north our ram website lost the diesel order option for 1500’s almost immediately and I couldn’t even order one for 23. With the price of the 2500 Rebel / Cummins - I may just hang onto mine until she rusts back into the earth.

I guess I had some wishful thinking when I saw that. I was hoping we’d get at least 1-2 more years of production, but oh well.
