Multifunctional Tailgate

I am picking up my 2020 Sport tomorrow with RamBox and Multi Tailgate. Can't wait for the ease of access and storage options it provides. I have young kids and thus 2 car seats making underseat storage in the crew cab worthless
We are Grandparents, so we have two (2) permanent car seats in the back…. just make sure the fold-down partition under the rear seat is “down” and you will be able to take advantage of some of the storage.

Hey guys,
I plan on buying a new 2020 Ram Laramie sport 1500 soon. What are everyones thoughts on the multifunctional tailgate? I’m hesitant on getting one. How do they hold up in the winter months? I’m here in Minnesota so it will be exposed to snow, ice and SALT! Can’t wait to get my new pickup. I’m switching from a GMC to a Ram
Best thing since “sliced bread”!! Just like O’MrB…. it’s just about the only way I access the bed!!! Love it!!

The problem with the Ridgeline style tailgate is you may not be able to open it all the way if you have a trailer connected. With the split tailgate it shouldn't be an issue.
EXACTLY!! I can only imagine swinging that whole tailgate 90 degrees. The barn door is the way to go…. (I believe) if they could have worked a way for 50/50, even better!!

Not sure this is what you're looking for, but the image on the left is how it looks with the tailgate down (see yellow box), and the one on the right, that part stays up and provides the hinge to open the gate-like doors.

appreciate the reply ... yes, ... was looking for more info on mft with no rambox option ...

Pretty sure he's asking about the bracing that's needed for the non-rambox beds with the MFT. Those beds require the brackets in the front corners of the bed. The pics you attached aren't bed bracing, but a structural part of the MFT itself. Any extra rear bracing would be internal.
thanks for clarifying ...

I’m happy w/the MFT on my Rebel, but it will limit tonneau covers options due to fitment issues w/the front bed bracing.

You can get the brackets from righton that will remove that limitation for the most part.

could you just relocate your oem brackets to work instead of getting the right on brackets...
They attached to the top of the bed to prevent the sides from flexing, not sure where you'd relocate them to, there isn't anywhere else to attach brackets to. I'd just get the righton brackets or make my own.

what l meant by relocating was to install the tonneau cover frame work then re-installing the oem brackets just below if possible or even on top of the tonneau frame ... why is it the righton brackets work ... are they thinner or are they able to be relocated ...

They are much thinner. Look at the pic in post #60 of this thread.

It sounds to me like there is an issue with yours. Have you taken it in and had it looked at? We have two of these in the family and we don't have to slam them to get them to close right and not have the dash indicator come on.

You shouldn't need to close it as hard as you can. Nominal slamming should be sufficient to get it to close right :ROFLMAO:
Just purchased a new 2021 Longhorn with a MFT and have the same problem with the dash warning light. Stays on almost every time after Ive closed the tailgate. Have to slam it hard to get the light to turn out. Assume it's just a switch / sensor out of adjustment. Will bring it up the next time I'm at the dealer.

Are you talking about when it's opened in the traditional way, or when you open it like barn doors? Now that I think about it we did have this issue happen a few times on the wife's 2020. But that issue cleared up within a week or so. My new truck hasn't had that issue though. But who knows, maybe I'm just used to closing it with a little more force now.

My multifunction tailgate sucks. If you don’t hold your mouth right and close it just right it won’t open and the dash light comes on saying your tailgate is open
I thought that about mine too. It ended up being a matter of a small misalignment at the locking/holding anchors. I took it to a dealer and they fixed it. I later added a hardcover and I had the issue again. But this time, I made the adjustments myself. Loving it.

Not possible - the brackets screw into reinforcements with threaded holes. The top rail of the rear bed wall, and top forward section of the bed rails use stampings unique to MFT-equipped beds, and are only reinforced at the current location of the brackets.

And with all due respect, the righton brackets don’t work as reinforcements, they just make you feel better about removing the factory parts. They do not have the rigidity of the factory bracket, but it may take a couple years to experience the failure mode they allow.

When using the MFT open both sides even if you only need to get in the left side. Firm closing of the small and then the large door always prevents the warning light for me.

Alternatively, before closing the large side, firmly push in at the top of the small side and that too will usually work.

Love the MFT…however, it is hard finding a cover that works due to the braces at the front of the bed.

You can replace the factory brackets and use pretty much whatever cover you want.
