Hemi lack of power

My Pedal Commander is currently set on City+4. Any more than that and it’s a bit too sensitive for everyday driving. This no doubt helped the throttle response. Tires actually break loose a bit now from a standing start but still not what I expect from the Hemi. My lowest 0-60 using the Race Stats app is 7.3 seconds launching in 4WD HI and traction control off so power to wheels isn’t being limited at all. Seems 7.3-7.8 sec is the range it wants to run at. Maybe I’m expecting a bit much at 4000 miles and it will get better. I will say this has never been the case with my other trucks. They had all the power from day one.

I have a feeling if you take your truck to the dealer because you think your 0-60 is slow they are going to laugh at you.

I thought the same thing and that’s why I’m hesitating taking it in. The truck has been perfect otherwise and no issues mechanically. Gas mileage is good and no other drivability issues whatsoever except for the dreaded throttle lag which I now eliminated. The average person would never notice this with everyday driving but I’ve been driving Hemi’s enough to know something is obviously off with this one.

I’m curious now, I’ll download that same app and see what mine does to compare.

I was reliably hitting ~6 seconds in my truck when stock. 2021 Lonestar with Etorque, 3.21. Auto 4wd dead stop pulls I could hit back to back 6 second runs on one stretch of road with multiple stop signs. I had a Borla S type but did no tune whatsoever so really it just sounded cool. A time or two I'd swear by a good 5.8 second time, maybe better.

With level and heavier tires I still push mid to low 6 seconds, with maybe my best now being 6.2 last I recall.

I've found that the feel of those hard/fast runs are different than a typical one. If I spend the week driving like a normal human being then I suddenly decide to step on it at a light, my truck will shift at 4500 RPM 1st to 2nd, and 5000 rpm 2nd to 3rd.

But if I spend most of the time really hitting it hard I'll shift 1st to 2nd around 5500 RPM and my 2nd to 3rd will be very close to 6000. Also at times I find that 4wd auto or 4Hi doesn't seem to give the best runs. I have some quick runs in 2wd so long as the traction control cooperates. After about 15mph I pick up speed faster in 2wd than I do in 4wd auto or hi. Instead of punching the gas directly from the brake i'll ease into it then floor it while still in 1st. I'll then run up to 5500RPM to 2nd, then 6k to 3rd. Get the hemi fart, etc.

Another thing I'll watch for is oil temp. If my oil temp is at least 220 then I'll push 6000 RPM wide open shifts. Transmission and shift points plays a huge part in quickness it seems. I'm usually shifting into 3rd at 55 to 57mph. By the time I see 60 i'm now fully in 3rd and it's not much longer before you close in on the speed limiter lol.

Just playing with that app in my focus. There is a pretty big delay from initial movement till the timer starts.

Great information. Thanks for this.👍🏻

So 0-60 times are actually longer than the app shows?🤔

When I time with the stopwatch app on my iPhone I actually get quicker readings than the Race Stats app. I start the timer as soon as I mash the gas and stop when the digital speedo hits 60.

Yeah I just tried it too during my lunch break. Huge delay from when I'm seeing 60 on my "analog" speedometer and the app. I'm at 60mph and the app is still at 45mph. Then my times were like 8.2seconds. Tried another app called Drag Racer and that one was even worse. Stop watch i'm at 6.5.

So far the most accurate method seems to be stop watch and fast fingers, or video it and go back and compare time stamps. 4Auto with traction off I was getting 6.5s using my phone stop watch. Felt the quickest too. Always a delay in when you punch your gas pedal down and when the truck actually takes off. Cutting that down would probably shave half a second off.

I probably did about 10 runs, various combinations just now, and 4auto with traction off works best. I had my oil temps around 224 at this point. Got close to 228 but I decided to head back to work lol. First few runs temps were low and I had semi early shifts. Last few I was getting 6k from 2nd to 3rd.

This was my average time with my 2017 full loaded Laramie with a topper on it and 120,000 miles. 3.21 gears and otherwise stock except for a Flowmaster American Thunder muffler and K&N filter. Quite a bit heavier truck.

Are you doing a poor man's launch control? I don't get a delay if I launch.

No for me the delay caused my times to be worse. The delay in the app/GPS caused my speed to not show 60mph on the app until i'm well past 60. At that point i'm backing off the throttle.

Also, I find the digital speedo skips and at time won't match 60mph the same time the analog one does. Like it skips 2 to 3 mph when hard accelerating maybe.

The lag between stomping the gas and having the rpm's actually jump, is kinda long for me at least.

Another good way is to video your Speedo. Then look The video time.

That’s what I’m gonna do. I think that's the most accurate way. Timing videos on YouTube that way with similar trucks I was getting right around 6.1 on average which is right in line with the 0-60 website data bank. I used a stopwatch for those videos and started as soon as I saw the tach and speedo move.

Here’s one of those videos as an example.

Are you doing a poor man's launch control? I don't get a delay if I launch.
Delay I guess is torque converter delay. Hit the gas and it responds quickly, just isn't immediately moving. I have 295/65r20 Yokohama MT's, so they're heavier and taller than stock. Have more of a delay now than I did stock for sure, so maybe I'm forgetting how quick stock was.

I did stall launches at times when stock. But too scared to try now lol. I don't want to wreck my torque converter. Those times I did the video and time stamp measure, had 5.8s.

When I video things now I see i'm sitting at about 650 rpm idle. Punch the gas I jump to 2000rpm, it moves semi-slowly to 2600rpm, at which point 2600rpm to 5000rpm its building much faster. 4000rpm you really feel the torque pull you back.

Using a stopwatch isn't accurate at all, but depending on the app, might be. Even trying to watch a video and use a stopwatch, or time stamps won't be that accurate. Speedo and tach usually have some delay to them.

I have also verified, with multiple runs, probably more than anyone else in this forum, that using 4-high gets the best launches without worry of wheel spin. Using 4-auto is slower due to power loss through clutches in transfer case. If you can prevent wheel spin, 2wd should be the fastest, but it's touchy getting a good launch without wheel spin.

When I run at drag strip, if only doing 1/8 mile, I stay in 4-high the whole run. If running 1/4 mile, I will switch from 4-high to 2wd after shift into 2nd. I will still get some wheel spin on 1-2 shift at WOT in 2wd. Switching to 2wd on 1/4 mile runs dropped 1/10 of my times.

This is the best I got using the stopwatch method. Traction control on and 2 wd. 33 gal fuel tank at about 1/8 so much less weight. No wheel spin whatsoever. Not even a single chirp from the tires.😲

Not real far off from my last truck measured the same way. Might not be completely accurate but can repeat within .1 second so can’t be too terribly inaccurate.

The more I use that Race Stats app the less I like it. Today it was showing 8.5 seconds on just about every run. Stop watch is 1.5 seconds difference. I believe the stop watch much more. If anybody knows of a more accurate app please post it here.

I currently have 3800 miles on this truck so gonna drive as is and see if the times improve as everything loosens up a bit. Being new I’m sure that makes a difference. I honestly never checked my last few trucks till they had over 20,000 miles on so don’t have a good baseline in that regard.

Leaving traction control on will result in a slower 0-60 time.

As far as apps, not sure of any decent ones for just your phone. If you want accurate, Dragy is good, but it's a unit that you connect to with your phone. And my TazerDT timers seem pretty accurate

Even if there’s zero wheel spin? I timed both ways and got the same time. Usually when the tires break loose even very slightly the traction light flickers ever so slightly. I have none unless I launch with a slight brake torque to get the rpm’s up. Either those Wildpeak A/T grip extremely well, which I doubt, or my truck has some low end torque/hp issues. That’s what I’m trying to figure out.
