Exhaust Manifold Options

Manifold kits arrived last night.

This is the passenger side kit that was $65.67.

FYI, the box says made in Korea and is dated 2023/08/29.

The kit itself is only $65? I guess the rest of what they charge to replace in the dealer is labor?

They list out for around $100 each. I think book time now is around 7 hours.

The 4th gen hemis are now kits and list out around 250 each.

I sure wish the headers on my Trackhawk were as easy as these. :(
 
I replaced both of my cracked stock manifolds this past weekend. I went with the BBK shorty headers here.

Install took around 7 hours over 2 days. I could have saved an hour or so by not trying to move the Y-Pipe back like the instructions say to do. This wasn't necessary at all. I did not have any broken bolts to deal with (except on the Y-pipe, which didn't even need to be moved)

Most of the time was spent turning bolts 1/16th of a turn at a time. Good ratchets and ratcheting wrenches make a big difference, I used the GearWrench 90 tooth ratchets and even with them I could only get 2-3 clicks per turn on the hard to reach bolts. I also purchased an air ratchet and some crow foot wrenches from Harbor Freight on the second day just to speed that up.

Driver side - ~4 hours
Passenger side - ~2hours

No more exhaust leaks, will re-torque the bolts in a few hundred miles.
 
I tackled this project this morning and all is going well. 40 minutes to have the passenger side manifold off and on the bench. Roughly 2hrs to finish the passenger side and I'm not going to tackle the drivers side until it gives me a reason to. It's not cracked but I have the parts on the shelf should I ever need them.

Couple interesting finds. The part number of the new manifold is different than the factory installed one and the casting is different around the area where it cracked.

They softened out the curves where the manifold is contoured for the bolt heads. Hopefully this change is the fix but I’m just glad to see they aren’t identical to the originals and destined for the same demise. Time will tell.

Old part number = 58365738AA (8K08)
New part number = 68529832AA (3D21)

Is the exhaust gasket bonded or stuck to the heat shield in the bottom of that picture?
 
Yes, I didn’t pry at it to see how well it’s bonded but it comes as one piece. The side that makes contact with the engine block is the bare heat shield and the gasket material touches the manifold.

Put 50 miles on the truck this afternoon and I’m amazed at how quiet it is again. I would have said it only made a tick on startup that totally went away after it warmed up but there is clearly a difference in overall sound.

Good to see there was a redesign. Hopefully they have been using them on production.
 
My '19 right manifold broke a bolt last month @ 59K (probably the manifold will crack at some point as well). I'd put a stock manifold back on (easy job) but no one has these. I'm happy to pay $1000+ for short tube headers that will bolt straight in and be done with it. Anyone have suggestions? I want to do a simple swap without replacing the Y-Pipe.
 
I did the AFE shorties with ARP bolts in June. Did about an 8,000 mile trip pulling a 32’ TT right after install. Snugged bolts when I got to Grand Teton from Florida. Haven’t touched again since. Did about 50 miles of off-roading in Moab on the way back as well. So needless to say, they definitely been out through their paces.

Did about 50 miles of off-roading in Moab on the way back as well. So needless to say, they definitely been out through their paces.

I didn't do the AFE's but the BBK shorties fit with no modifications. They have been solid for the ~1000 miles I have had them on. We just towed our 29.5' TT 200 miles last weekend.

I've seen mention that all 3 brands crack BBK, JBA and AFE, so it's hard to decide on which brand. BBK because they're the cheapest and if they're going to break you're not out much?? I've been contemplating same since mine needs fixed at dealership.

Cool. Just wondering if it's even worth it to do it early in the warranty or just wait it out as long as things doesn't get worse...or effect other things.

Yes no mods to system. Did have to notch the flanges as some of the bolts won’t fit in because of tubes, and had to zip tie some stuff out of the way.
