Engine shutting down while driving

Exactly the same thing has been happening to me. 2023 RAM 1500 with 18K miles. The first time it happened I was at a stop light at a large intersection. All the dash lights went on and couldn't restart. Brake pedal was hard and emergency brake engaged. Had it towed to the dealer and of course they found no codes and could not reproduce. Got the truck back from the dealer after a few days and two days later it happened again. Back to the dealer and yep, no codes, couldn't reproduce. The kept it for about 5 days driving and trying to reproduce. Next time I was 2,000 miles lateer while heading on a long trip, got 200 miles from home and it happened again when I pulled over for a pit stop. Dealer has had the truck now for 14 more days and can't reproduce. Dodge (Stelantis) customer service is not helpful at all. They keep closing the case because, you guessed it, the dealer service department can't reproduce the issue. What comes next? What are you all doing about this issues on your own vehicles?
Asking anyone with this problem to file with the NHTSA’s website. It’s the only way to get a recall. Thank you.

Hi first post (live in Australia so can't lodge with NHTSA)- My RAM2022 1500DT Laramie 33000KM has stalled 5 times- back to the dealership 3 times- no error codes, no defect keep handing it back to me which is unacceptable. -RAM Trucks Australia has a duty of care to continue investigation and remedy (Repair,) the root cause before serious accident/injury occurs. Or to Replace, Refund under ACCC guidelines. My experience and error messages when it occurs
  • 4 have occurred when traveling 50 to 60kmph
  • Would say two would relate to slowing down
  • 3 of these occurred over 10 days in Jan 2025
  • 1 occurred on the freeway at 80km (due to reduce road works speed limit)
  • Car stalls
  • Immediate anxiety as where to bail out too safely
  • Hazard lights engaged.
  • Error message flashes up
  • Emergency braking Unavailable
  • Think there is something else (Too busy trying to stop safely to look at messages completely).
  • Message left on screen
  • Stop/Start unavailable Service Stop Start.
  • Check engine light yellow appears. This will stay there for up to X days
  • Restart car- drives normally. Check engine light Amber remains on.
Is anyone aware of the update to NHTSA- FIAT/Chrysler was due to provide information requested by them by end of Oct 2024. I can't find and status updates.

2021 Ram 1500 Laramie Crew Cab, e-torque. The truck randomly turns off, happened to me once and my wife twice. When it shuts off the brake auto engages! As it should, but this shut off deal alot of people are experiencing is going to cause an accident. Of course the dealer can't find any codes, can't find any problems and cannot get the truck to stall on their 3 mile drive.
check for a recall search you tube I think some of the 2020,2021,22 they had a flash update for the ECU.

Been having issues with the truck since 8,000 miles. Now almost 50k. The dealer replaced MGU (eTorque) at 16,000.
Truck is 2023 1500 3.6 v6 with etorque (MGU).
Truck shuts off while at low speeds, almost like motor hesitates and then dies, sometimes when gently pressing accelerator/gas pedal.
Been to the dealer now about 10x, they reprogrammed truck, they checked electrical systems, and they replaced the MGU unit last year as they could not for sure figure out what is going on. Truck seemed to work okay. Service manager (SM) requested to bring it in immediately if it happens again, so this time I did when it died.

What happens when it dies/stalls... Truck shuts off. Restart and get low battery warning. If you drive without shutting and restarting the 12v battery begins to drain and will get below 10volts, then the dash lights go off, the truck will eventually begin to idle at 2k RPM, exhaust smells like rotten eggs (according to me and dealer mechanic), and this time it started overheating when I took it to the dealer and coolant fluid boils out of the overflow. That got the service managers excited as they saw this all happen in the service bay.

HOWEVER, if you just shut down and restart after initial restart, the truck works fine.

Truck is at dealer since this just happened and they ran tests while it was still running before it died ( it pulled 25 something error codes, I'll share shortly).

Today they ran more test and it came back normal with no errors. SM said they would replace MGU again to see if that helps as mechanic said there have been some issues with his past experience.

I requested they check lithium battery - no report yet.
Beginning to wonder if it is fuel related, like an injector.

UPDATE: Dealer said after restart the codes were cleared and truck ran fine. Mechanic suggested to replace MGU so they did. This is the 3rd MGU (eTorque) for this 2023 1500 3.6 v6 with etorque.

I wonder if it is caused by the running too rich that effected other model years (2021), however they state is only the 5.7 eTorque model.

Update, my 2023 also has a cooling flow to the etorque (MGU). I guess when they replaced it they did not fill up the coolant. Anyhow my cooling fan kept running a bunch over the past few days when it was cold out so I popped the hood and looked at the coolant level in the main reservoir and secondary reservoir. Main was low and secondary was empty. Filled them up and now no more engine fan running so much.

Did you find a solution for this? I have the exact same issues/symptoms 2023 with 5.7 etourque

Just happened to my 2023 RAM 1500, 3.6 V6. While backing slowly into a parking space, the truck shuts down, puts itself into park, and sets the parking brake. Scary stuff. Truck has been flawless unit now. Any further word on this issue?

No check engine or codes on display… only two red batteries displayed at times..

2/14/24 Slowed down left u-turn engine shut down.. pulled over came to complete stop.
E-brake auto engaged and it shifted into park.. press E-brake switch to release, push start, restart engine and select drive to drive away… went to dealer.. scanned a fault but I could not leave the truck that day and was told there were no rentals for use… they will call when one is ready… waited a week and went back to
dealer and the truck was scanned again “no fault” meaning the fault that was found was now gone and was it not documented by the dealer…. can’t find anything can’t fix anything…

5/16/24 Slowed down for speed bump engine shut down... pulled over came to complete stop.
E-brake auto engaged and it shifted into park.. press E-brake switch to release, push start, put in drive to restart engine and drive away… went to dealer.. scanned no fault (had a friend in the truck at time)

6/1/24 Slowed down right turn into store driveway engine shut down.. came to complete stop.
E-brake auto engaged and it shifted into park.. press E-brake switch to release, push start, restart engine, select drive to drive away… two battery displays on… had to turn off and restart for the displays to clear.

7/4/24 Slowed down left u-turn engine shut down pulled over and came to complete stop.
E-brake auto engaged and it shifted into park.. had to press E-brake switch to release, push start, restart engine, select drive to drive away…
Thinking that I got into the habit of setting the auto shut off override button and that’s maybe why the big gaps in time of the problem showing up.. I stopped using the override button and try to help with the troubleshooting.

1/7/25 Slowed down for speed bump engine shut down.. pulled over and came to complete stop.
E-brake auto engaged and it shifted into park.. had to press E-brake switch to release, push start, restart engine, select drive to drive away…
Back to dealer software updated… not related to fault found…

3/3/25 Slowed down for right turn on red.. not a complete stop.. engine shut down.. complete stop.
E-brake auto engaged and it shifted into park.. had to press E-brake switch to release, push start to restart engine, select drive to drive away… two battery displays on… had to turn off and restart for the displays to clear. Back to dealer… Stellantis STAR report opened.. dealer updated all modules software…

3/20/25 Slowed down for right turn yield sign… not a complete stop.. engine shut down.. complete stop.
E-brake auto engaged and it shifted into park.. had to press E-brake switch to release, push start to restart engine, select drive to drive away… back to dealer same fault found again…
Got text from dealer that report from Stellantis to dealer NO REMEDY.

3/30/25 Slowed down for right turn on green light… not a complete stop.. engine shut down.. complete stop.
E-brake auto engaged and it shifted into park.. had to press E-brake switch to release, push start to restart engine, select drive to drive away… THIS TIME THE AUTO START-STOP WAS DISABLED…both batteries displayed in red… this time alarm sounding with battery displays in red as driving away from stalling out. Only after second restart did both clear….

After many trips to the dealer... "I like them"... and after many calls and emails to Stellantis Customer Care & Experience. and The Customer Retention Team case manager.. I now hate my case manager for the many days of no call backs and no return email .. and the lack of backup and escalation from Stellantis... In the end she said after 10 days with a flight computer attached no problem was found... so there is no problem !!!! they will stick the head in the sand... so my documentation of the events with a witness and the error codes found before mean nothing...
So as we all can see they do have a problem !!! I ask everyone that is having this problem... open a star case, ram claim, NHTSA report, and in my State FL. a Lemon Law arbitration case..
The dam shame of this whole thing with me is I really do like the truck !!! I just can't "LIVE" with this problem....

There are two distinctly different issues here.

The first is the truck shutting down at higher speeds and the dash console lighting up like a Christmas tree. That can be caused by the above referenced (in the video) star connectors.

The second is a slow speed stall when turning or coming to a stop, followed by the shift to park and then drive console warning. I have personally experienced this one in a rented Jeep Wrangler with the plug-in hybrid motor. Although this vehicle had a completely different motor from our trucks, it did have the same 8 speed transmission. There has been some limited success addressing this issue by cleaning and/or replacing the throttle body. Personally I suspect that this is a software problem associated with the Transmission Control Module.

Always start simple and work out from there. If it was my truck the first thing that I would do is calibrate the gas pedal. You can eliminate the E-brake and slam into park by disabling those functions in the safety options. If the problem still exists I would clean or replace the throttle body. After that I would have a new software flash on the TCM and after that replace the TCM. If none of that worked, I would replace the Transmission and if the problem still persisted I would replace the truck.

Hey thanks for the input...
It all make sense to me and would be willing to try... BUT.... The Stellantis Customer Retention Team does not seem to have a plan like that... or any plan...
They claim they can't fix what they can't see during testing...
So me with the fault codes pulled and a list of stalling in traffic along with everyone on this thread does not have a problem.. heads in the sand.. more like up the xxx...
And I'm sure like me... anyone having this problem would not want to try and "live" though your process...
I'm going for your last suggestion... would you like some lemon AID ?
