Engine died twice now

This has happened to my 2019 RAM 1500 twice as well. I am fairly certain it has something to do with the MDS. What I have observed is the following:

1. As decelerating, I can see the "Econ" light come on the dash indicating that the MDS has shifted to only 4 cylinders.
2. As you approach a very low speed (probably 10'ish MPH) the "Econ" light will go off, indicating that the engine is shifting back to all 8 cylinders in preparation of your acceleration.

The two times that mine has died, it happened exactly when the "Econ" light went off.

I'm thinking that sometimes when the extra 4 cylinders comes on, the engine stalls.

Obviously it doesn't happen everytime, but I will continue to monitor and try and capture a video.

This happened to me yesterday as I was approaching a stop sign in my neighborhood. I did brake at a little faster rate than normal. Engine stalled and then it put itself in park when I stopped. Had to push button twice. I had 1/2 tank of gas. Doubt MDS was activated as I was driving 25 MPH and had just accelerated a little into a curve. No problem after restart except the uneasy feeling of not trusting my truck. Never had a single stall in modern computerized era with any vehicle until now. Until it can be replicated on demand no use taking it to the dealer. Only 1200 miles on truck.

I bought a new 2019 Etorque Ram on 11/25/19 and the motor died twice on 11/26 with a resultant check engine dummy light on...Went back to the dealer same day and they said the battery was defective. New one was installed and then again the motor died on 12/5; no dummy light this time. Each time it happened I was at a stoplight and the issue went unnoticed until my foot left the brake and hit the accelerator with no results. After noticing the gear selector in Park I restarted and away I went. I have an Appt to have it inspected on 12/9 but I must admit I'm very uneasy about this issue. Dependability and reliability aside, this is a safety concern to lose power unexpectedly. The vehicle has a grand total of 250 miles and I'm concerned what the future has in store.

I would suspect that the 48v battery is bad. There's been quite a bit of posts regarding that. The battery is VIN specific so there may be parts available or not. I wish there's something that can be done as far as diagnostic on the eTq system as it seems us early adopters are paying the price.

I recently experienced this engine issue. Was accelerating and around 25 mph the engine just died with no warnings. Called the dealer to let them know that it was running normal afterwards and that I would bring it after the holiday vacation for a check up. It is a little concerning that the car just died, specially with family in tow on a very busy street (had to stop on a middle lane to restart). I"m hoping it was a one time bug, else this could be a significant problem. I have a regular 5.7 hemi Bighorn with less than 3K miles. I love the truck. Hope it was a one time thing.

Just happened to me as well on Friday driving home from work. Stopped at a stoplight and as the light turned green i went to accelerate and the engine died. I had to restart and everything went back to normal. I drive a bighorn 5.7 with e-torque, approx. 6k miles and a build date of 2/19. A few times in the past my battery light on the dash would come up but it would go away within seconds without any issues. I'm assuming its a related issue.

I have had similar problems to this occur with my 2001 Dodge Ram 1500. When I braked hard or went across railroad tracks the truck would just shut itself off. Eventually it caused my PCM to fail.

After many dead ends trying to resolve the problem I finally found a wire that would momentarily short to the frame when the front end would dip. The wire was part of the primary ignition system that seemed to go all over the engine compartment from batt to starter to alternator to pcm etc.

I found it the hard way by scanning every wire in the front end for any sign of rub marks. Finally spotted a shiny spot on a wire underneath the left headlight near the frame.

I wrote it up in an old Gen2 forum years ago.
Good luck!

I finally got around to taking the truck in to have it looked at. They said they found a few wires that were loose on the battery and they tightened those up and I should be all set. On my way home from the dealership I was approaching a red light and the battery light came on. Back to the drawing board I guess.

One year and 35000 miles of suspense is enough for me! Had this happen several times. Trading in the city girl (Limited) for the old dressed up farm girl (Chevy High Country), with her leaf springs and small screen. Sorry this isn't more constructive.

Just wondering if anyone else has had their 2019 simply die? It's happened to me twice now. The last time it happened, I was decelerating to take a right turn at an intersection. As I rolled through the turn, the engine just quit. I had to coast to the side of the road, put it in park and then restart the truck. I didn't notice anything out of the ordinary. Once it restarted it ran fine. I was at the point where I was going to get gas the next day (I had a little over 1/4 tank) but doubt that was the issue. I also do not have the stop/start option.

Thoughts?

This happened one. At a stop. Truck turned off and the gear selector shifted to park. I turned it back on and seemed like it ok. Weird.

This just happened to me about 20 minutes ago as I was exiting the highway. I braked a little harder than normal due to a truck switching lanes in front of me. As I was braking, I felt the transmission downshift very hard. It felt like someone had pushed me. At that point, the engine died. I just hit 30k as I was driving today. In the past couple of days, I noticed my transmission was downshifting harder than normal. I would only feel this when braking a little harder than normal, but definitely not slamming on the brakes. I have a 2019 1500 Laramie with a build date of 3/2018. Up until this point, everything has been pretty good with this truck. Definitely going to take it in to the dealer, but after reading these comments, I have little hope.

threads like these make me wish i wouldnt spend so much time reading on this forum :ROFLMAO: i hope everyones able to resolve their issues. I haven't had this issue at 6,200 miles, but it's definitely not something i'm going to be comfortable with if i ever do have this issue!

I have a 2021 RAM 1500 and ran into a similar issue. I am at 2000 miles and was driving to work this morning when mine stalled out. I passed a vehicle nearing a red light and someone ahead also merged in the same same lane causing me to have to stop sooner than expected. I braked suddenly, but nothing too crazy. The start/stop system kicked in and shut off the engine while I waited for the light to turn green. As soon as I let off the brake, the engine died. I restarted the engine and the vehicle was in park and the parking brake was engaged.

I called the dealership service department and they looked it over and said the truck didn’t throw any codes and they couldn’t reproduce the issue. I have been loving this truck so far, but this has made me lose a lot of confidence in it.
