Differential or Transmission Clunk

They need to remove the drive shaft, take one of the clamps off the dust cover closest to the rear. Slide the rear shaft out apply grease in the weird long extended slip yoke. Mine is smooth as butter now. I posted a pic earlier of the drive shaft and what the dust cover sleeve looks like.

That was repair attempt #2 by the dealer. It did nothing to solve it for me unfortunately. It was a smoother bump, but still quite pronounced.

Stealership's are terrible, doubt they even greased it up properly...they are clueless. Good luck and I would make them take pictures of the work next time. Warranty so called work is horrible.

Thanks. I think the mistake was them reusing the driveshaft that had 10k+ miles of unlubricated slip yoke action going on. I can only imagine there's some galling and abnormal wear from that. They should've ordered a new drive shaft, torn it down to grease it up, and put that on the truck.

They tried some software on the transmission last week, which didn't fix it, and now STAR is involved. We'll see what they come up with.

The only thing that fixed it before was the replacement driveshaft, until the unlubed/under-lubed condition of that slip yoke caused it to go right back to doing it. Was good for about 500 miles.

Oh, and the weirdest thing - in sub-40 degree temperatures, it won't do it or will take a lot of driving to start doing it. Warmer than 40, it will either start happening right away, or within a few minutes of driving. Will happen immediately when it's 60 degrees or warmer out.

Agreed. I'm expecting that this grease job we did will not last forever, but wasn't too difficult to work on. I also think you are spot on, even now the new drive shafts are lacking enough lubricant, causing it to fail prematurely. Mind blowing with what we all are having to deal with on a $55,000+ vehicle...and the lack of support/knowledge from Dodge/Ram on this matter.

It's a poor design. If it requires the regular greasing that it seems to, there should be zerk fitting there. And when you think about it, we have 3-piece drive shafts when you factor in that rear slip yoke - that's a lot of places for something to go wrong.

Well, I got my truck back on Wednesday. The problem appears to be resolved - and I did plenty of driving in this warm weather after I picked it up, to confirm. They took the driveshaft apart again, and per @tcutlip89's repair method of greasing it up even more, this seems to have solved it. I'm guessing they went a little conservative on the grease last time, whereas my method is usually grease it until it's oozing out. :)

Mark, thank you for the reply.

As an update, unfortunately, I can replicate the issue again. We had a beautiful day yesterday here in Virginia, 80 degrees and sunny, so I went for a drive. The higher temperatures always made this problem worse, and it seems to have returned. It is not as severe as it was, but I can replicate the issue. We will see how it progresses, as it always began as a soft bump and gradually became a more harsh jolt. I've reached out to my FCA care rep already as well.

Thank you Mark. I will PM you.

Sub'd.
Same problem here, bump from stop, gonna have the dealer rub my shaft with some good ole FCA grease......

I'm noticing it more with the warmer weather.. Gonna wait until it's HOT.. that way they can really feel it, and not make any excuses!!!

I have read this forum but am new to writing on it. I have a 2019 Ram 1500 Bighorn (new body style) that I got in May 2019. I started to have that bump when coming to a stop or starting on the roadway and it slowly became a little more prominent. This started around 19,000 miles. I had the update done to it which fixed the problem (after driving for two weekS so it could relearn). I’m at 29,000 miles now and the bump is starting to come back. Has there been anything done that will resolve this issue for good? Or will this be something that I will Keep having to tend to over time? Also for notes I have the bad moaning sound when first backing out of my driveway which the dealship said they have ordered a brake moan kit to be installed to fix the problem. This was ordered February 17 and even with multiple calls they still tell me they haven’t got the part yet.

It sounds like you need to reach out to ram cares. I believe the issue with the brakes was the calipers. I had the same problem and they were able to rectify it.

Hi @Diggit4610 - I am very sorry for the trouble. I would be more than happy to learn more about your most recent experience addressing the bump with your dealer, and I would also be happy to escalate a case to try and get the brake parts in as soon as possible. Please follow up with me via private message when you can!

I have this same bump/clunk problem. Look forward to hearing any updates.

I’ve had the same bump upon stopping and starting since I got my truck. I now have 4,000 miles and it’s still doing it. Glad I’m not the only one.
