Hey everyone,

Been a lurker here since I bought my truck recently. Been loving it so far, aside from a persistent ticking sound that's been driving me crazy. I know the "Hemi Tick" is a thing, however coming from my 4th-gen which was silent at 100k miles it's been driving me nuts. Sounds like a card in a bike wheel even when the truck's warm, and even at higher speeds.

Here's a video I put together today after mounting a microphone to my wheel well. Any insight I can take to the dealer would be appreciated:

I tried Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 5W-20 with a Mobil 1 oil filter, I've tried manually shifting to disable MDS, and I've tried tow/haul mode and it still persists. Dealer said it was normal but I don't buy it. Anyway, let me know what you guys think. Thanks.

my truck is at the dealer now for this very reason. exhaust leak that my dealer said was very common and easy fix. I'll try to post the invoice when I get it back.

haven't picked up the truck yet but invoice details gasket - exhaust manifold, bolt-hex flange head, stud-double ended, bot-hex flange head

Hi there, we certainly understand how this noise is concerning. Should you require additional support while your truck is in service, please be sure to send our team a private message. We would be more than willing to get you connected to a case specialist to further address your concerns alongside your dealer.

It's a bummer when our Ram pickups have issues as Ram dealers are more likely to be crap than quality.

I'm trying to set up my first Ram dealership service appt and it's been a challenging experience. Of the three I called, two won't pick up the phone and all online reviews are horrific both for sales and service. The one service advisor I spoke with was uninformed and had a who-cares attitude. They claim the lines are recorded for quality control but you'd expect some follow-through if it was the case. Thank gawd I have a good customer oriented independent shop for non warranty work.

Good luck to those willing to try FCA's discounted 3rd party LLC extended warranty.

Lots of comments regarding exhaust manifold leak. I have a 2020 Laramie with eTorque Hemi as well with 32,000 miles. Just diagnosed with cracked manifold on the drivers side. Currently part is on back order and dealer doesn't have any sort of ETA. They told me could be a week or 6 months. Kind of a bummer. Hope you get yours resolved.

To me that doesn't sound like the "Hemi tick" that I've heard in the past. I've not heard a "Hemi tick" get louder on acceleration.

2019 Ram 1500 Billet Silver Laramie Quad Cab 2WD, 5.7 Hemi, 8HP75, 3.21 axle, 33 gallon fuel tank, factory dual exhaust, 18” wheels. Build date: 03 June 2018. Now at: 047672 miles.

I've been experiencing the same sound coming from my 2019 Longhorn w/ 5.7 hemi engine . I just hit 40K miles on engine. The sound is exact to yours and after about 2-5miles of driving as the engine warms up it seems to go away. I did some extensive research 2 nights ago and from what I've found the outcome seems to be either cracked exhaust manifold bolts, warped exhaust manifold, or cracked exhaust manifold with dealership costs to repair ranging from $600 ( to replace the bolts ) - $1,500.00 (to replace the manifold). Owners have said they have had to replace their exhaust manifold multiple times and have upgraded to aftermarket headers to avoid having to pay for the repair again. I personally only had the 36,000 warranty and my truck goes in for oilchange on friday. Needless to say I am a bit on-edge but prepared to get the news that I will be dishing out some $$$ for a repair.

Thanks for the input everyone. Finally did a drive-along with a tech at my local dealer and the experience left very much to be desired. Constant denial of hearing it at all across the board/making me feel like I’m going crazy lol.

Even test drove another 2 trucks in the lot that didn’t do it but the salesman kept trying to convince me that it was there.

anyway, they set me up with a loaner and will “take a further look”, however if Chrysler comes back saying it’s normal, they’re gonna leave me with the loaner bill. Also, they won’t be able to actually look at it until next week😑 Pretty frustrating experience all around. @RamCares I’ve gone ahead and sent you a PM with all of the details and my work order. I look forward to hearing back!

I’ll keep you all updated. Thanks again everyone.

To those interested, here’s footage I took today from my truck, followed my the two others we tested today:

Definately a diff between a tick and that OP's exhaust leak that I hear. Sound is weird though, a lot of factors go into finding the issue.

try running 89oct helpd my motor get a little quieter, if not possibly a manifold issue, dont loose sleep over it its covered under the 5/60k power train..

The OP video sounds like my truck did. Huge crack right through the exhaust manifold. I'll post pics when I get them.

Hopefully the crack on the manifold is obvious, like Ray Charles could see it. Most times the part needs to be falling off the vehicle before the dealership acknowledges the problem.

An old timer once told me connect a vacuum cleaner to the tail pipe of a cold engine and feel around the manifolds for leaks with your hands or listen with a stethoscope. Sounds good in theory never tried it myself

Update: after a week at the dealer finally heard back. Surprisingly they were able to replicate the issue, however it apparently isn't the exhaust manifold after initial inspection.

Monday they'll be tearing into the engine to inspect rocker shaft, push rods, lifters, etc for wear. The Ram Cares rep that was assigned to me said she hadn't heard of this issue before so they're interested in hearing the full diagnosis. Will update again next week.
