Adding Passive Entry: How-to

Yes, the door panels need to be removed. And yes, you can install on both front doors.
Thanks. I was wondering if you HAVE TO install on both front doors or if you can just do drivers side?

Also, bummer to know interior panels have to be removed. I'm gonna be worried if they have to remove them to repaint. The last time I had body work done where the panels were removed, I had some rattles afterwards. Drove me nuts and wasn't worth the headache that would be asking the shop to fix an occasional rattle. I'd almost rather have exterior scratches to be honest.

I've read through this whole thing once, albeit many months ago. Had a couple questions; was hoping I could get some quick answers rather than scanning the whole thread again.

Was side-swiped at slow speed unfortunately and the repair MIGHT require a full repaint of the driver side of the truck. Figured if there was ever a time to do this mod, it might be now. Especially because I have a BTS and would need to replace all the handles (likely painted Tank Green) since textured aren't available in PE variety.

1) Body shop said they would remove all trim and handles to repaint. Does removing the handles require removal of the interior door panel? If it does, might as well do the harness at the same time. Even if it doesn't, it would be a good time to get four handles painted to match and I know I can relatively easily swap them myself if I want to do the harness later.

2) Can you only install PE on the driver's side? Or does it have to be both front doors to work properly?

Thanks in advance!

Removal of just the door handles/caps does not require removal of anything on the interior. It’s all done via the screw behind the small plug on the striker side of the door.

You can install PE on just the drivers door and it will function, however you will have a fault in the fobiksafe system which is discussed in this thread.

Just went outside and took a peek. Saw the plug on the front door. The rear door appears to be different. Do you know off hand the process for that?

The rear doors are the same process, the hole is just hidden behind the weather stripping straight back from the handle/cap.

If anybody doesn’t want to spend the money for the entire door harnesses and rear facia harness, and doesn’t feel like building the add on harnesses with the parts, let me know and I can build them for you-

These still being built?? Id like pricing if so!

Hi, I would be interested to add a Passive Entry. my VIN: 1C6RRFFG5KN694170 I already have to start with the button.
is it possible to finish only the front handles without the loading door handles?
will i have to replace fobik?
I would like to make sure what I need to buy

Thank you

Why are the handle caps left/right?
is it the key for the driver side?
which is the driver side? Left or right?
curious because i might do back doors too.

Left should be the driver’s side and has the key hole. You need to swap the internals from yours into the new one. The remaining 3 caps on the truck are all the same since they don’t have the hole and come ready to install.

Finally finished my install. I have a 2020 BTS, and I actually liked the way the matte handles looked. I ordered the patriot blue handles just in case I had second thoughts on what I was about to do.
I scuffed up the handles and started with Duplicolor’s bed armor. The texture was good, but the coverage was bad. After 4 coats, I could still see color through the texture. I ended up hitting it with a light coats of Rustoleum textured black. I’m not sure how it will hold up, but if it doesn’t, it won’t take much to sand down and respray it. I think it turned out decent.

Jimmy07’s harnesses made this an easy install.

Can you snap a picture with the new and original handles together?

Side by side mine have a bit more texture because of the bed armor, but if you wanted a close match, the rustoleum textured black is close on its own. It fits with my truck as I have the Lomax bed cover which has a bed liner coating too.

Thank you sir. I know which direction I'm going with my bts.

I’ve made it through many pages of this thread and haven’t found what I’m looking for. I’m interested in adding passive entry to the rear doors on my truck. It’s already equipped with passive entry on the front. Is there a post somewhere in here that details how to tap in and wire this up for the rear?

on a side note, it drives me nuts that the truck doesn’t have it on all doors. My 10 year old Audi and my wife’s Honda minivan even have it on all doors…

I was going to add it to the write up once I got it accomplished. @Jimmy07 were you ever able to track down the terminal pins for this? It’s still on my to-do list as well.

If you are going to use the numbers below to order parts, double check them as things can change over time, so it's going to be up to you to verify you're getting the correct part when ordering. If you find a mistake please let me know so I can correct it.

5th Gen 1500 Handle and Cap Part Numbers
These should work on any of the 2019 and newer 5th gen 1500 trucks. Harnesses are going to be more specific based on your options, or you can just add the 2 wires and plugs to your existing stuff and save a good bit of money.

HD Part Numbers
The part numbers for the HD's were sourced using a 2020, 6.7L Cummins 4WD Bighorn Crew Cab, but should be the same for all the newer HD's. If anyone has numbers for the body color/chrome handles, please let me know so I can update the list. This is just what I have been able to easily find so far.

The following is a breakdown of the parts you will need to assemble your own 2-wire harnesses for the doors, as well as the rear antenna. All of the connectors and terminals can be found at Mouser or Digikey, except for the Yazaki stuff.

Rear Antenna Wiring Parts
22AWG wire (2 colors to make it easy)
Heat shrink tubing (recommended)
Braided wire sleeve (recommended)
Rear PE Antenna: 52112204AA or 56046957AA should work in this location
2019 & 2020 Rear Fascia Connector Terminals: TE Connectivity 1241380-1
2019 & 2020 Rear Fascia Connector Wire Seals: TE Connectivity 828904-1
2021 Rear Fascia Connector Terminals:
2021 Rear Fascia Connector Wire Seals:
2019+ Rear Antenna Connector Shell: TE Connectivity 1-1438608-5
2019+ Rear Antenna Connector Shell Terminals: TE Connectivity 1355717-1
2019+ Wire Seals for Antenna Terminals: TE Connectivity 963530-1

Door Handle Wiring Parts
18AWG wire (2 colors to make it easy)
Heat shrink tubing (recommended)
Braided wire sleeve (recommended)
Door Connector Terminals: Aptiv 10762775
Door Handle Connector Shell: Yazaki 7283-6079-30
Door Handle Connector Shell Terminals: Yazaki 7116-4720-02

Yazaki parts are hard to find without ordering minimum quantities. One option is to call SMD Inc, and see if they’ll send you free samples (2 connectors, 4 terminals).
Just wanted to update the HD door handle list. I was able to pull these from an electronic parts catalogue (@MayhemMOORE: feel free to delete this post and update the original):

I can’t find them, or anything that will work as a substitute for them. The manufacturer won’t tell me the part numbers because “an OEM owns the drawings”.
I’ve done quite a few, but for now, the wires get pulled straight through the main door connector instead of terminating on each half of the door connector.

Thanks for following up on it. I’ll probably reach out soon for some harnesses for the rear and just pull the wires through and tap into the trigger wires as you said. It’s not like I’m taking my doors off all the time and would really need the ability to unplug the harness.
