Some would probably say I’m wasting money on 93, but I see differences that I like on that octane, so I’ll throw them here for you guys. I fill up at Costco and they only have 93 or 87 here ( The 93 is also cheaper at Costco than 87 is at the closest station to me by about $.35 right now Yay Costco! ) I live in South Florida so no real winter results but here’s the facts: 5.7 eTorque, 3.92 4x4, 26,500 miles over a year and 3 months. I ran the truck almost 5,000 miles before I realized 89 was recommended and so I switch to that. Going from 87 to 89 I noticed ( by feel ) a slight improvement in performance, nothing special, but I have a OBDII reader that shows timing and boy did that change, I didn’t realize how much it was pulling timing on 87, and the biggest place you notice that is in the MDS mode, which advances the timing as much as possible for efficiency. On 87 the MDS kicked off at 55, that’s the highest it would ever get. On 89 the MDS would stay on until about 68-74 depending on winds and temps. That was the big change for me. I do mostly highway so my overall fuel economy improved about 1-2 mpg. I was on 89 for about 8,000 miles before going to the Costco 93 and it did improve a slight bit more, the fact that it did at all surprised me and convinced me to stay with the higher octane. I got my best fuel economy ever on 93 ( 19.8 avg over 400 miles mostly highway ), best 0-60 ( 5.87 *based on my OBDII ) and highest MDS sustained of 79 MPH. There’s plenty or arguments against the higher octanes and lots of people run 87 just fine with no issues ever but for me the numbers and feel make it worth it to me.
