I've been using 89 octane for one year now. Price is now close to $5 p/g. Am thinking about using 87 instead. Have any of you used 87 from new to current. Everything else I own is on 87 including 454 Chevy motorhome. Thanks

I have only used 87 in my 19 and 21 ram not many miles on them, but never had a fuel issue/power issue. I hear the ram tick once in a while, which everyone says the hemi is known for? I think ram recommended 89, but I think it says 87 is fine?

I used 93 for the first 5 fill ups. I then switched to 87. I noticed no difference and have been using 87 for the past 34 fill ups

89 is recommended. 87 should be fine as long as you don't hear any pinging. A lot of people on here run 87. Where do you live that it is the expensive? 92 is $3.74 here in Indiana.

I’ve used 87 since day one and don’t see a reason to switch. My mpg’s are within 1mpg of the estimates.

As everyone else has stated, 87 (or 85 for higher altitude) is still fine. I've run multiple tests with all octanes and all the results are the same. Same mpg. If there is a slight power decrease, I don't feel it. However, you will notice the knocking/pinging if towing heavy loads on 87. With that being said, I also have a 2006 dodge Durango 5.7 hemi with 315k miles on it and most of its life was spent on 87 and never had an issue.

I stick with 89 - I get that 87 lower overall but the price gap between the two is not enough that I would consider it a savings I had to have when 89 is recommended.

Yea, read into it what you want but the manual says the truck was designed to run on gas between 87 and 89. If it runs good, does not ping and carry on (i.e. you got a decent motor that is tuned properly and have the correct 3:92 gears) then using 87 because it works will be fine. Now if you have inferior 3:21 gears (🧨) and your tune is all out of whack then no gas that is going to help you. You are just putting a bandaid on an open laceration at that point.

I have a 2015 Laramie, 5.7 with 90k, all on 87. No problems, still runs great!

Maybe I will try putting 91 octane gas in my 3.21 rear differential, and 75W-90 gear oil in my engine and see if that can squeak a few more mpgs out of my truck.

I get about 20-30 more miles off a tank of 89 then 87 in my 20 rebel . 16.8- 17mpg a average with 87 and 18-18.3mpg with 89

so it's probably a wash since you are paying higher for the 89. In fact, you might even be losing money on this deal!

I use both but notice the transition from v4 to v8 is smoother when running 89

I usually run 87 in my 5.7s and never an issue. I mix in a couple tanks of 93 here and there just cause it makes me feel better but don't notice a difference power wise or MPG wise.

Sam's Clubs and Costco premium gas price here is the same or lil' higher than other gas station Unleaded gas so why not use them.

So you average around 1.3 mpg better with 89.

Looks like you might live in TN judging by your handle (it would also indicate that you advocate the use of 87 octane...). Looking at the website GasBuddy for Memphis, I see 87 sells for about $2.60/gallon. 89 is $2.90/gallon.

That extra 1.3 miles for each gallon costs $0.30/gallon or $0.23/mile. The first 17 miles you drive costs $0.15/ mile. Paying an extra $0.08/ gallon extra for the additional 25 miles per tank (split between 20 and 30) is $2 extra for the better milage.
