87 Octane

Poster asked where is the high price. I'm in California. It would be nice if folks from different areas would post their price of 87 & 89. Thanks

I ran 87 for the first 3 tanks and my truck ran great. After reading a similar thread, I decided to try 89 for 2 tanks. I didn't notice any difference in power or MPG's. I paid $3.69 for 89. 87 is $3.39. I'm going back to 87.

I've been using 89 octane for one year now. Price is now close to $5 p/g. Am thinking about using 87 instead. Have any of you used 87 from new to current. Everything else I own is on 87 including 454 Chevy motorhome. Thanks

I’ve been alternating between 87 and 89. Have not noticed any issues yet. Waste of money to go above 89 on a stock motor.

Big caveat--I have the v6, not the Hemi.

I've used 87 since day 1 with zero issues. Around here (Northern Virginia), 89 tends to run $0.30-0.60 more than 87, with 91 tending to run $0.60-0.90 more than 87. Even if I managed to eke out a mpg or two or a few hp from higher grade gas, at best it'd be a wash, at worst I'd lose money going up a grade.

At the gas station I usually fill up at, last week the three grades were $3.29, $3.79, and $3.99, respectively. With a fillup generally being ~30 gallons, at 17.5 mpg, 87 generally runs about $99 for ~$0.19/mile. 89 at 19 mpg would come out to $114 for ~$0.20/mile.

With 89 vs 87 you might hit 0-60 a half second sooner.
The question is, would you notice?

Sam's Clubs and Costco premium gas price here is the same or lil' higher than other gas station Unleaded gas so why not use them.

But their 87 is a better price than other stations. Isn't that why most people would use SC or Costco?

I’ve been running 89 since the beginning, so I have nothing to compare it to. It costs me $5 more per full-up. I’m already paying $120 to fill the thing anyway, what’s an extra $5?

The manual is "weasel words". You can say the engine is "designed" or capable of running on an 87, but that's like saying humans are capable of running on celery juice only for a few days. We all want steak, why do you hate your truck so much??

The manual recommends 89.

Put an ODB2 data logger in your truck, and get back to me on how often the 87 gas forces the truck to pull timing. Whether YOU notice it or not is kind of irrelevant, the engine absolutely does, and since the computer is reactive (knocking occurs first, then it retards timing after that), it's like feeding a diabetic a pack of sugar when you notice them trembling in the wind; kind of too late at that point, isn't it?

Thanks a lot. Now I'm going back to spending another $12 on every fill-up.

I am right there with you on this! I have run 91 in my truck since new as I cant stand the ping.

That’s like people that spend money on exotics and don’t factor in cost of ownership. They either ruin them by not performing the maintenance, sell them when it’s due.

Learned the lesson of factoring in cost of ownership from helping an uncle with his drag car. You may have enough to build it (or in this case buy it), but can you afford to drive it.
