8.4" to 12.1" screen replacement

Hey all - so I'm in need of a bit of help. I have a 2021 Ram 1500 Laramie with the 8.4 non-nav UC4 from the factory. I picked up a 12" UC4 setup on eBay from a guy who pulled it from his 2020 1500 and swears it was working when removed.

Long story short, I have everything wired up (all harness cables from the truck and the LVDS cable from module to screen) and made the changes to ICS (not enabled) and DCSD (enabled) in AlfaOBD. I have double and triple-checked the wiring, even re-pinned the HVAC harness to be sure it wasn't a bad adapter. All the buttons on the surround work (A/C, hazards, etc) but I get nothing from the screen and no sound from the radio. Just black screen of doom.

I pulled fuses F41 and F44, tried pulling the negative terminal on the battery and left it for over an hour, power cycling the truck, and resetting the ECU in AlfaOBD to no avail. I'll list the parts below in case anyone knows something I don't. Dude swears it works, but I'm starting to think I need to submit a claim on this thing.

I know the module is from a 2500, but from everything I've read in the forums folks swear it works in a 1500. If somebody knows different, let me know!

Sounds like your UAX module is bad. With no sound at all then I'd have that checked out. We can do a bench test on all components or just the module if you like to go that route. HD UAX should work just fine in a DT, only issue can be cargo camera and/or steering wheel controls, it shouldn't stop the unit from displaying anything. If your programming is correct, you can double check it by performing a canbus reset which will allow the UAX to display image for one cycle. Since you did this and still have black screen then again its the UAX module.

39.7 was unreleased as it was riddled with problems. There is a 39.9 for the UAX but its best to just go to 40.1 as its the last update for all Uconnect 4s including the UAX 12" system.

Looks like anything after 39.7 looses performance and off road pages.

I would like to do a UC5 to have Wireless CarPlay but staying UC4 is fine.

Yes. I had the 8.4Nav and did a full swap. I had to get in touch with the Uconnect engineers but I was able to use remote start, WIFI, and Ram Connect

If you stick to UC4 then yes, you can contact Uconnect Services to have them swap over the service to the "new" radio. You'll have to give them what ever info they need to get it working. But as for UC5, no, those use a separate module for telematics which your vehicle will be missing if you upgrade to UC5.

You want the full UAX bezel? The knob itself isn't usually sold solo but you can get a replacement UAX screen/bezel. If you found one from a junk yard that had broken screen you can swap the screen to the bezel that works. Otherwise just buy a replacement UAX bezel/screen.

First post, I'm just dropping this here because this thread was very helpful in answering questions while adding the UAX to my 4th Gen 2014 Ram. Here is how you can get your radio unlock code for free...

The Anti-Theft Code is easily deciphered, get the last 4 of the serial number form the radio module (not the screen), for example; last 4 of 0313. To decipher:

100 - 03 = 97 (100 minus first two characters of the last 4 digits of the serial number)

99 - 13 = 86 (99 minus last two characters of the last 4 digits of the serial number)

Full unlock code is 9786.

I believe this will work on all UAV/UAX/UAQ/UAS radios (probably all the Canadian versions of the same as well). Credit doesn't go to me but another member on ramforum whom I had a chat with but I'm failing to remember at the moment.

For those whose screen touches aren't working (or knobs aren't responding). I'd recommend opening the radio up and ensure all cables are seated properly. When I opened mine to remove the screen, I noticed what appeared to be a ribbon cable unseated from the factory.



EDIT: Question for anyone with AlfaOBD willing to check. Can you go connect directly to the 2017+ radio navigator module -> select the battery -> read system status and tell me what is listed for the current cabin EQ curve (should be a number)?

Yes. Same Screen, but you may wish to find one that matches your current features for the buttons surrounding the screen.

Yes, just like @SitKneelBend said you need to make sure you match the features of your truck to the 12" screen you get. Example is traction control button above the 12" screen. These buttons can't be swapped from screen to screen so make sure to get the correct one for your application.

The transition from the 8.4" screen to the 12.1" is a great upgrade! You will need the compatible radio module, the adapted beam and maybe a reprogramming. Some have already done it, so it's worth seeing their feedback. Can't wait to see your installation when it's finished!
