Next time you go riding out, verify your speedometer accuracy by using a gps app on your phone. If you are off on your speedo, you will be off on you mpgs as well (even hand calculated). Not saying this is your issue but it could be.

Have a bucket with water and laundry detergent at the ready. You can throw the used bonnets, pads, towels, etc in there before the residual product dries.
Start light, don't use compound (at first). Test the waters with a medium duty polish; on that says it's for removing swirl marks. Swirl marks live on the very top layer of the clear coat. No need to go deep on your 1st time out.
