Loud Noise on Startup

Checking in to see if anyone is having the same issue I'm having. On startup, I would say 7-8 out of 10 times, there is this really loud noise! My wife even commented on it...she said that does not sound normal! I haven't recorded it yet. Anyone else having this issue???
Yes I have a 2019 ram intermittently when I first start the vehicle it’ll make a popping banging , like there’s back pressure hitting the baffles in the exhaust system , i’ve taken it to the dealership but of course it doesn’t happen during that time and they can’t find any problems with it but it concerns me that in time it will damage the exhaust system ,

My truck is at around 1600 miles and just started doing this. A distinctive clank on some, but not all startups. I am already on my second transmission (first one leaked from brand new). It started over the weekend and now has happened randomly about 3 times. Exactly as in a couple of videos above. Engine fires, immediately followed by the sound of a hammer hitting metal. Sounds like under the truck, not the engine.

I'm at the dealer for a recall and of course, has not happened.

Has anyone had a resolution or has anything actually finally broken enough so that a fix/cause can be diagnosed?

Did your first tranny clunk?

No, had a leak, no noise, just a recurring slow drip. According to FCA and dealer a "porous" transmission. Evidently, a problem with casting process.

All good for about 500 miles then then the new and exciting "clang" or "clank" noise recently at startup.

Still trying to narrow down with or without parking brake, hot or cold start, etc. but thus far I have yet to reliably reproduce.

Just wanted to add an update to my thread. I HAVE NOT had the clunk for about a month now! No explanation for why. I haven’t been back to the dealer. I have about 8,000 miles now.

Mine still does it even after 3k miles. It's not as bad but it does not clunk when I remote start so I just do that 90% of the time. No one seems to actually know the root cause.

Could this be linked to using 87 octane instead of the recommended 89?

Did you dump your F150 Eco because of the engine noise problem?
Was it the cam phasers?
I had this issue and currently looking at the new Rams....

I've heard the snap crackle pops on cold startups...figure it is just stuff expanding. Coming from 2 turbo F150s in a row...I'm used to start up noise.

Can you take a video to compare? IIRC, I haven't noticed it as loudly here recently....I did switch to Pennzoil Ultra Platinum about 2500 miles ago though. I'll pay attention in the morning when I start up again.
m?

Nope, I have used all grades and has no effect. I just hit 3,300 miles and it does not clunk as much anymore. How many miles do you have? I'm thinking it may just need some time to break in?

I'm at 800 miles now and using 89 octane.

Mine used to be bad and I only drive 6k miles a year so it took a long time for it to get better. But now at 3,300 miles it only happens 2/10 times where it used to be 7/10. When it was always happening I just remote started it and it never clunked when remote starting.

Have 4WD? Have you used it yet?

Got the same noise about once every 10th start. Haven’t noticed a pattern. It’s not the parking brake, mine is set to engage automatically. Haven’t asked dealership about it yet but will when I go in for steering recall. I’m sure they’ll say that can’t replicate and do nothing, but it’s loud when it happens.

Completely agree with you! Mentioned to my dealer and they had no clue as to what the culprit may be. How could FCA engineer this truck and then be clueless as to what the root problem is? Sounds fishy to me.

Having the same metal on metal noise with mine. Just purchased it on 2/28 does anyone have any idea what's causing this yet?

Sounds like you are describing the bendix hitting the flywheel as it shoots out to turn the motor. Maybe the starter needs to be shimmed. Not uncommon at all.

That's what I think it. You're hearing the starter bendix engaging the flywheel.

I have this noise as well. Dealer said they couldn't replicate it. Patiently waiting for some sort of resolution.

Hi Tdogie83 and illucid,

Sorry this is happening to you! If you're currently working with your servicing dealer for diagnosis, feel free to PM us and we'd be glad to provide an extra layer of assistance while your vehicle is in service.
