Vararam Air Grabber intake installed

I think I'd be inclined to want a bit of filtering to keep out insects and dirt, but it's probably pretty un-critical.

I wasn't able to get my cover back on.
I wasn't running with the engine cover anyways.

You have to look at how it's routes from the factory. The fitting is on the intake tube. At WOT, when there is no vacuum in the intake manifold and air is rushing past the fresh air fitting, which could create a slight vacuum in that line. Think of it like the crankcase evap systems that use exhaust gases flowing past a tube to suck vapors out of crank case. Replacing it with a separate breather doesnt do that.
I mean it's venting into the engine compartment or somewhere. If it was attached to the air intake it would have a slight vacuum but nothing crazy.
I guess i'm just not sure the purpose of a breather vs going into the intake, maybe a federal emissions requirement to eat it back up vs just spit it out?

This is what my install looks like in case anyone is curious.
I am going to cut the plastic RAM cover at some point when I get around to it and snap it back on.
Also going to move my catch can most likely, maybe see what I can do with that plastic bracket for the oil intake that says v6

I do not have etorque. I was confused when the instructions said to take off engine cover, because after I did and got the Vararam installed, I realized there was no need to even remove it. Took the Vararam back off, snapped engine cover back on, then re-installed the Vararam.

I think the only reason I would of needed to remove the cover (if I didn't already have it removed) was to disconnect the air line and install the breather as it's under the cover. The cover should mount far enough back to clear the intake completely with etorque.

Not sure if it's the same on non-etorque but getting that cover back on is crazy hard. I gave up as I was going to put the cover back on before I finished the install but said screw it.

It takes a bit to get it lined up. I just thi knit looks better under the hood with the cover on. Hides a lot of the lines. And I take it to car shows where looks matter

The Vararam didn't come with what the Mopar unit comes with to seal it, they don't even include it in the instructions.

This video at 27 seconds in shows a part that inserts to seal the existing hole

The install instructions for the Mopar unit call it a inlet close out cover but doesn't provide a part number.

I'm wondering what the part number is to order it.

I don't NEED to do anything. It's no different then a seal for any other air system. If it's sealed more air will be forced to come into the air intake and the rad.

I called a dealership and they had no idea what the part is. They said that performance parts can't always be ordered except as a kit. They said if i found a vin number of a GT truck (I had to tell them it comes standard on them) they might be able to find it. But I wonder if on the GT they don't include the tube from the factory to start with, vs capping it off.

The Vararam has been around far longer than the Ram air from Mopar. If it was an issue, I'm sure they would have addressed it.

I was pretty much going to skip any CAI until I saw this thread. This intake looks pretty great for a decent price.

Over four years with mine installed. Still love it. Grabs attention anytime the hood is open from people walking by. Gave me a verified 1/10 faster 0-60 run over stock intake . No issues in snow or rain. You can see from this picture, that even though the engine bay is packed with slow from going out and playing in snow drifts and blowing snow, there is very little in the Vararam. Is that an aftermarket front shroud? I cannot see that flap that drops down in front of the radiator.

It's an oiled filter. I ordered an extra one so I could clean one without any down time waiting on it to dry.

Shroud is the factory shroud that I trimmed and "massaged" to allow airflow into the box. Used my heat gun to warm up the plastic and take some of the bend out of it so it has gap between shroud and the intake.

Only negative I would say is, it's kind of in the way when filling your oil after an oil change. Isn't hard to listen the clamp on throttle body to move it out of the way, but just another step when filling your oil.

Instructions tell you to remove the engine cover, but I think that's on the 4th gens . Definitely don't need to remove it on these trucks.
 
This is the All New Vararam Kit for the 2019 Ram, updated 2019 Kit & instructions, Product Code: VR-HEMI-5G . I installed a Vararam Air Grabber Ram Air Induction System for the 2019 Ram 1500 5.7L Hemi trucks. To start off, the Vararam air box has an insulated bottom under the air filter box and the engine cover stays in place over the engine and both of these keep the engine heat away from the air filter intake. The hood forms the top cover for the Vararam air box and the Vararam air box has a nice high rubber seal all around its edge. I didn't need to cut or modify the radiator shroud. I put a spacer in the center of the radiator shroud to hold it up and it made a tunnel to direct the cold air to come up from the grille and directly into the air filter (Forced Cold Air Induction). No hot air will enter the air filter and throttle body from the radiator as I removed most of the Active Grille Shutters (AGS). I removed the top 3 louvers and the 5th louver. I left the 4th and 6th louvers so I didn't get a error code from the grille shutter motor. I didn't want to do a complete (AGS) delete. The cold air enters through the entire grille, passes through the removed (AGS) and is directed straight up into the Vararam air box. The hardest part of this install was removing the grille to get to the (AGS). I spent about 2 hours removing the OEM air box and installing the Vararam Air Grabber System. Don't forget to remove the negative battery cable for 30 minutes to reset the computer per the instructions. This Vararam air filter has a defiant increase in intake sound. Did horsepower and MPG. increase? My butt-dyno feels like there's more horsepower. Could this Vararam Intake be considered a Forced Cold Air Ram Induction Intake (Forced CAI) ??? :) Maybe.

The cost was $344 from Moe's Performance delivered and I think (JMO) it is a very good (CAI) with my installation mods (lots of cold air) compared to a (CAI) installed in the engine compartment where the OEM air box, filter and air tube is replaced and using the same air entry point for cold air as before. JMO.
