Best Dash Cam

I'll have to figure out whether to power from the fuse box or from the mirror. Haven't thought that far ahead yet since my truck is still only in D status!

Don't do the mirror...take an extra 10 minutes and run it to the fuse panel.

got to drive around town today for a few hours.
with the camera hooked into the rear view mirror connection the camera comes on with a welcome message and starts recording when you start the truck. it keeps recording until you shut off the truck. you can see the imagines on your phone with the app through the wifi, but it stops recording when you look at the pictures. any hard breaking seems to put videos into the emergency section of the app. of you can teel the app to save what ever video you want.

for a under 200 dollar camera it does what is needed and that is to have a recording if something happens in front of you. if you do not want to hook it into the rear view mirror it comes with a cord long enough to reach your other ports.

if you want a rear view then this one is not for you

Sorry, but to install a camera with no parking mode is just crazy to me. More $hit happens in parking lots than anywhere else. For not much more, you could have gotten a far better camera with more features. Your money...your truck.

Unless you have a 360 degree view in parking mode, the camera isn't very useful. I don't ha e the rear facing camera on mine because the one that came with my dash cam isn't a good style to try and mount in the vertical rear window without making some sort of extra bracket. And too cheap to buy another dash cam when I have it mostly as a CYA in case I get in an accident while driving. Being able to see what car hit you in a parking lot while you were away just proves you were hit in the parking lot. Good chance there isn't a clear enough view to get a license plate. And even then, parking lots are private property.

The Miofive does have a parking mode but it's the owner's choice to turn it on. Bashing on someone for how they choose to spend their $$$ seems a bit desperate and out of line.

Let's check the facts on what "more features" means. The only comparable Blackvue for price is the more expensive DR-590X 32GB.

Shared features:

• single channel
• GPS
• no cloud-based features

Differences:

• 590 starts at 32GB vs 64GB for Miofive (590 has option to upgrade for more $$$)
• 590 records in 1080 60fps vs Miofive 4k 30fps (4k 30fps is far superior to 1080 60fps; and the 590 only records at 60fps in single channel, in dual-channel it's at 30fps)
• 590 has a dual-channel option (front and rear camera)
• I think the Miofive may have a better camera sensor than the 590 but the specs I've found make it difficult to compare
• Miofive has much faster 5GHz wifi (Blackvue lists 802.11 b.g.n so I assume it's only 2.4GHz)
• Miofive has a screen for set up and viewing (in addition to an app like the 590)

If 2 or more channel setup is wanted, then the Miofive isn't an option but I've read they're coming out with a multi-channel dash cam next year.

I did the comparisons, read the reviews, and found the Miofive to have more features and much better value. It may not have the brand recognition of Blackvue, Viofo, etc since they're a new player on the market. I'm very happy with mine and plan to put one in all of our vehicles.

OK...two things:

1. I have no company to push. I am an EE that gives solid advice on installations and product selection based on 35+ years of experience
2. I post stuff because I DO CARE ABOUT EVERYONE ELSE and hate to see folks make bad, or uneducated decisions. Why do you think I am on here??? There is absolutely nothing in this for me other than helping others.

Being able to see what car hit you in a parking lot while you were away just proves you were hit in the parking lot. Good chance there isn't a clear enough view to get a license plate. And even then, parking lots are private property.

You would be surprised how many accidents happen in a parking lot or parking garage where the camera did get the plate and the hit and run driver was brought to justice. A TON more than you may think or believe. Just sayin.

Was not bashing anyone...your are misconstruing the information/advice I am trying to offer which is solid and accurate. Desperate? Why would I be desperate? I have nothing to gain. I am simply a well educated engineer with years of in-vehicle electronic installation experience and have literally helped hundreds of forum members with their camera/radar detection selections and installations both in person and remotely and have been doing car electronics since the early 80's. All done on my time at no charge. The only Blackvue I would recommend is the DR750X-Plus. You don't need a 4K camera anyway...more hype than true benefit. The DR750 has the best Sony Starvis on the market...has cloud based capabilities; can have a rear channel camera added at any time and Blackvue has the best app in the industry. The 590 is a good camera, but you bought a $60K plus truck...why skimp on something as important as a dash camera that could save your @$$ if something unfortunate was to happen? In the end...if you're happy that is all that matters. But, please don't confuse my providing information and stressing the importance of having parking mode active with bashing My goal is, and always has been, to help folks on this forum make well educated electronic decisions and provide advice for those who want it whether product related or installation related. My dash cam serves exactly one purpose...to keep people honest when they do something stupid and cause an accident. Parking mode has no value to me. I'm honestly not even sure it's turned on.

All I'm saying is that if you have a camera that supports it, you might as well use it. I know you see no value in it today. But you will if someone hits you in a parking lot and you're not there to see it. Enjoy your truck and your camera my friend. Defensive parking has served me well, long before I had a dash cam. I can't remember the last time I've had someone park beside me in a public parking lot. I also use private, monitored parking when it's available.

If there's ever a time I don't feel good about where I'm leaving my truck, I leave the dash cam on anyway.

I know where I live drivers are brutal and unfortunately often will hit a car in a parking lot then just take off. It has not happened to me (knock on wood) but I am very careful about where I park and will walk 500 feet if I have to just to avoid other cars.

But...if someone rams your car and does $1k× damage...would recorded video not remove any arguments from the insurance company that someone did in fact hit you and that it wasn't your fault? In my case, Park Mode is 1/2 the reason I want to get a dash cam.

A few months ago...I saw a drunken tourist on a scooter slam into the back of a car parked at a beach parking lot...the owner of the car was in the car with the engine running but in Park...the scooter operator then got off the ground and claimed the driver of the parked car reversed and slammed into him. I was a witness and helped the driver out of that mess.

Unless the person that hit you is identified, it's still your insurance footing the bill. I have accident forgiveness on my policy and uninsured motorist. Both prevent my premiums from going up should that situation happen. Not all insurance companies, or policies are as forgiving
