Doesn’t bother me at all. I’m just merely pointing out that everyone has a wide range of different driving conditions so 3.92’s are not ALWAYS the best option. Use what works best for your application.

Nah he Just likes to show his low mile / speed averages but won’t show a long term average. So far I’ve yet to see a 1k+ trip average above 20mpg with a 3.92

Sure. I use my truck. If I was driving 20k highway miles a year in an unloaded vehicle, it wouldn't be in pickup truck with a V8.

I don't know that I have a 100 mile trip with my truck unloaded, let alone 1k miles.

Yep, and that's fine. If your truck lives on the highway with the other minivans, I could see why you wouldn't care or even know which gears are better.

I can tell you that here in the Dakotas, that’s what most are traveling on the highways.

My cruise control is always set at 81 on the interstate.

This is also where pickups are the daily drivers, and they’re not always “for use” vehicles—just the culture. That said, I went 3.92 because I’m not concerned with fuel economy; crosswinds, headwinds, highway merges, hockey moms lallygagging, etc. I opted for snappier acceleration, however marginal, because I’m used to driving sportier vehicles and I added heavy options to what is already a heavy truck.

Get what you want, enjoy your decision, and don’t feed the trolls.

Today while cruising along with my 3.21 gears on my daily commute I had some time to ponder. I clearly need 3.92 gears for extra oomph at these speeds.


As suddenly as I thought that a Prius and a Chevy Spark simultaneously blew by me like I was sitting still. If only I had 3.92 gears to compete with them.

Feeling dejected I look in my rearview mirror and see a 5th Gen barreling down on me.



He flashed the 3.92 gang sign and I knew I’ve been had. This went on for about 5 miles and due to heavy traffic he couldn’t get past me. Suddenly he faded way back and pulled over. Dang 3.92 gears……….he ran out of gas. I feel lucky that I had 3.21 gears and was able to outrun him otherwise I might have suffered the same fate as this poor soul who obviously also had 3.21 gears and was going far too slow.


That was my attempt at humor. Hope you all enjoyed it. Figured this thread could use some good laughs for a change.

I have some time to respond to this now so here are my thoughts……..

For me owning a truck is all about payload capacity and not so much towing capacity since my boat is barely over 2000 lbs. At any given time my truck is loaded up with either hunting, ice fishing or camping equipment. Yes I actually tent camp and don’t haul my temporary home around. Rarely is my truck empty since I like keeping things loaded up that I’m frequently using at that time of year just for the convenience. When it is empty it’s because I loaded up with remodeling or landscaping materials which I’m working on far too much these days. Hate to admit it but I even doubled the payload capacity a few times and bottomed out on the body stops. I was actually worried about snapping axles. Not good but the ole’ girl handled it well.

As you can see my truck gets used WAY more than the average truck driving on the roads these days and NEVER hauls groceries.

When I spec’d mine out back then payload capacity from 3.21’s to 3.92’s was only an extra 40 lbs. I didn’t believe it but it was true. Considering this and my driving habits I thought 3.21’s were just fine for me and they have proven to be for the last 9 years. Never once had a thought of “dang wish I ordered 3.92’s”.

If I was hauling a camper like you for 80% of my driven miles obviously choosing 3.92’s would be a no brainer. Different situations call for different approaches. I would hope we can come to a common ground and all agree on that.

Couple of observations since I upgraded to 33" 4 ply tires without re-calibrating my speedometer. The avg mpg is lower, and takes more time to update. This is probably due to ecu to reading less mileage, but the same fuel consumption. It also takes longer for the avg mpg to update.

On the other hand, should my mpg actually be better since taller tires equates to a lower final drive ratio? I haven't hand calculated yet. Just curious if this sounds right.

Who told you there was a difference in payload based on gearing?

What was the return trip mileage? I have a Porsche Cayenne Hybrid that from my home to New Haven I can get 34mpg. The return leg is 24mpg. One way mileages can be misleading.
