I’m looking into getting a travel trailer and there’s plenty of info on here from guys with relatively stock trucks, but I was wondering if anybody has towed with 37 inch tires on their Ram? I know the 37s robbed a lot of power on my truck, but idk how heavy I could still confidently tow? I have the hemi, 3.92 gears, & 4” lift. Any insight is appreciated, thanks!0C4744FB-C179-4174-A6B2-6CDFF9B9C4EA.jpeg

Yeah that’s a good point. I’m effectively at a 3.38 gear ratio with that calculator. So maybe I’ll look up specs for a similar truck with 3.21s and then subtract 1000lbs from it just for a buffer

So my truck is rated for 11,180lbs and with 3.21s it’s rated for 8080lbs. So I think keeping it about 7500 max would be perfect, which is actually what I was guessing before I even checked these numbers haha

how do you like the Bds lift?

My TT is about 7,800 fully loaded. I have a similar spec truck minus the 37" tires. I think you would be fine with sticking around your 7500 number more max trailer weight. Main thing you will fight is the wind drag. Empty my trailer is 3,400lbs and honestly pulls about the same full vs empty. My guess is your truck will just need to downshift a bit more on the hills. It's pretty rare that I go far fully loaded. Normally I fill up water and dump waste tanks at the camp grounds.

You may want to consider your available payload as well. Either by weighing your truck as is or if you know the weight of your mods you can do some figuring yourself. I’d imagine your mods have eaten into your payload quite a bit

I have the 3.21 gears in my truck. Mt TT is about 7000lbs loaded and I can haul that around all day every day uphill both ways with no issues.

7500 max is a good number for tow capacity but keep in mind with a travel trailer they have a lot of tongue weight so your limiting factor is really Payload.

The 4” lift and bigger tires mean the truck is heavier than stock, I’d recommend getting it weighed if you want to know your true legal payload before you get a camper, but this isn’t super necessary, just try to stay a bit under the door jam payload number. Speaking of that what is your payload? Our trucks are super similar in configuration so I’m gonna gues somewhere in the ~1550 range

How does the truck handle? I see you’ve got the hellwig but still your CG is quite a bit higher than the stock trucks, so sway control is of higher concern, might want to stick to a camper that weighs less than the truck, maybe something in the 5-6000 range.
Also just my personal opinion, your truck would look BadA** towing a GrandDesign Transcend 😎

For everyone asking, my payload is 1750 so my truck actually has pretty high payload considering all the options the truck has! And as far as mods go, really the only mods that added any noticeable amount of weight is the bed cover (around 80lbs), the steps (not sure but I think 50lbs), and the front skid plate probably like 25lbs. I don’t see how wheels and tires would subtract from payload because it’s not adding any weight to the truck, it’s what’s supporting the truck lol. I could be wrong but logically I just don’t see how that would eat into payload. So assuming I still have 1550lbs of payload after and a 12% tongue weight on 7500lb trailer that still leaves me with 650lbs of payload left over. Me and my girl & dog weigh around 350, so still 300lb left over which more than accounts for any other weight I’ve added to the truck with little stuff.

7,500 lbs TT will be too much

If your factory towing capacity was 11,180 lbs that means you have 1,280 lbs of payload.

Remember GCWR is 13,900 lbs for 3.21 with stock tires. Your braking and handling is greatly reduced with 37’s.

I agree with suggestion above to weigh the truck for a baseline. All those aftermarket add-on’s will reduce your towing ability. Steps, cover, rug etc. Weight is weight. Those 37’s are heavy

I’d estimate 5,000 lbs max for a TT

Is 1750 on the door sticker? As mentioned above these numbers don’t add up.

Max payload on a CC 6’4 4x4 Hemi etorque is 1680 pounds and that’s for a no-option tradesman.

Wheels/tires do add to truck weight, thus reducing payload.

Nope, the numbers are correct. Most (if not all) half tons run out of payload before they actually hit their advertised towing limit. I’ll attach the guide from Ram as well as my door sticker. My door sticker actually is a little lower, 1643 instead of 1750, but still way higher than 1280 lol. Also I disagree that “weight is weight” in regards to the wheels and tires. Wheels don’t add payload because it is not weight pressing down on the truck. Sure there’s extra weight & drag but they’re not actually compressing the suspension like payload would.

My GCWR is 17,000 because I have 3.92s not 3.21s. Also not sure what you’re basing that payload number off of?

1643 payload. The sway bar with aftermarket end links is amazing! When the rear was lifted 2 inches I had it on the middle hole, now lifted 3 inches it’s on the firmest hole. It’ll never corner like a sports car, but for a big truck it’s weird how little body roll it has and how stable it feels! Most stock trucks have way more body roll than my lifted one lol

Oh wow, 1600+ is impressive! so taking into consideration the mods let’s say you added about 250 pounds. I’d keep payload under ~1400.
Wheels and tires are apart of a vehicles “Unsprung weight” even though the suspension does not hold up the weight, it still is apart of the truck, if you think about it, the axles are not held up by the suspension and they are included in the trucks empty weight.
I’m not sure where you’re getting those numbers from.
So when you said 11,180 he took that and subtracted it from GCWR 17,000 (5820) then took 5820 and subtracted it from gvwr 7100 getting the 1280. Your towing by j2807 is 11,180 but by the numbers it’s actually 11,543.

I’m not sure where you’re getting those numbers from.
1,643 is your actual payload not 1,750 lbs. Disregard the chart #’s. Still a solid number

My GCWR is 17,000 because I have 3.92s not 3.21s. Also not sure what you’re basing that payload number off of?

Yes, but you said that you were going to base your towing number off of 3.21 to compensate for the 37’s

So 13,900 lbs GCWR would be the number to focus on, not the 8k lbs tow capacity

@Nsleone laid the math out above

Gross weight ratings don’t distinguish unsprung weight. It’s all the same on a scale
