Hemi beating Ecoboost???

I have thoroughly tested my F150 2.7L, our Silverado 5.3L and my RAM 5.7L. My Ecoboost was without a doubt the fastest truck we owned, whether 0-60 or 1/4 mile. Not sure about top speed.

The only way I can see a Hemi beating a Ecoboost is purely as a driver's race scenario, especially if the Ecoboost is 2wd. Due to the low torque curve & near instant torque, it's easy to spin the tires on a 2wd truck and lose all your time there. In 4H, I would be surprised if even the 6.2L GM could out-drag the 2.7L Eco.

I also love my RAM Hemi, I can live with it being slower than my F150 :)
Nah I'll say the 2.7 is pretty much on par with the Hemi 5.7. we've already beaten the 2.7 Eco with two different Hemi Rams. So it's drivers error. It's not like we were 20 truck lengths lol...it was around 1/2 - 1 truck length at the most. And the 6.2 is no joke.

Didn’t say that. I’ve owned both and I’m simply letting you know the Ram isn’t going to outrun the 3.5. But feel free to jump out there and give it a shot.

Turbos don't stop when under throttle, they keep going spinning and working under moderate to heavy throttle. The only time your turbos are off boost is under very light throttle when they are in vacuum and the engine is essentially running naturally aspirated. The instant you are on throttle they are running and don't stop until you lift the pedal.

Not by my personal experience or any official test I've seen, the Hemi is clearly slower than the 2.7L. You won't find a single group test of any 5.7L Hemi that out accelerates a 2.7L. But I believe you that you won those races. Under real world conditions and impromptu races, the 2.7L is hard to launch cleanly in a 2WD due to traction limitations. To get that quick 0-60 and 1/4 mile time, you need to get a good launch, that's why the fastest times recorded on the 2.7L have been 4WD trucks launched in 4H.

But we are talking about 400 ft-lbs of torque available at a lower rpm than the Hemi & 800 lbs lighter weight compared to a similar RAM, so the physics are hard to beat there. I raced many a Hemi and never lost, but today I own a Hemi if that tells you anything. Speed isn't everything, the Hemi is plenty strong and has a lot more character.

As a former 2.7 ecoboost (2wd) owner I can attest that no stock equivalent truck will beat it around town.
But it has two things working against it. The gas turbo doesn't always hook up when you hit the gas. When it does hook up, holy sh*t it moves. But a lot of times it 'duds' and doesn't give you the expected torque kick in the seat.
Also, the 2.7 sort of runs out of steam around 80mph, whereas the hemi seems to continue to get stronger.
The hemi is a much more pleasurable truck to drive.

Oh no...I completely agree! This thread was about me and my coworker outrunning a 2.7 Eco with both our Rams. Not the 3.5.

Idk man, I've owned a few Turbo vehicles and every one of them I was only able to keep boost going for 2 full gears. Maybe this is new turbo tech that I haven't read up on or something but either way...I think we can all agree that the long term reliability of the turbo engines are crap and that the performance of them over time decrease significantly.

I hear ya...but my coworker and I already dubunked that myth. We smoked more than one 2.7 ecoboost which were 2wd. My coworkers Hemi express 2wd is the bare minimum...lightweight Hemi which is a huge advantage over any other trim...even faster than my Hemi Etorque with 4wd auto launch.

Exactly what I was saying...I don't think the turbo can continue to boost constantly...there has to be a cooling period, otherwise they'd fry the turbo and cook the crap out of the oil.

This sounds very wrong to me. The turbo is spinning when there is exhaust, heat doesn't interrupt that in any way. If you're between (say) 1000 and 5000 rpms, you're making boost unless it physically disintegrates.

3 weeks ago at a huge car cruise in southern Kentucky, my buddy got smoked by an EcoBust F-150. SMOKED. As soon as the light turned green it was over and there was no recovering from it.

Thing is, my buddy was in a 2004 Mustang GT with a ProCharger, gears, drag radials and lots of supporting mods. LOL!

When he caught the guy, he asked what was done to the truck. The guy said it was a 3.5 EcoBust with a downpipe, CAI, and tune. He said it runs low 12s in the 1/4 mile. Moral of the story: Be careful who you pick on at a red light.

I 100% believe this. I've seen what a tuned 3.5 ecoboost can do lol.

Not at all, the Hemi isn't light weight, it's almost 800 lbs heavier than a F150 of similar configuration. Quad cab vs extended cab, 2wd, 4wd, etc.

Any 2WD F150 is going to have an issue putting the power down if they over cook it when starting, the wheel spin, even slightly will result in a much slower time.

The Hemi, even in 2WD doesn't put out the torque as hard, so it launches easier. You actually only reinforced my point, not dubunked it. If you race a 2.7L in 4H, there is no way a Hemi can beat it.

True but there's a difference between a turbo spinning vs actually boosting. The turbo has to be spinning at a certain RPM in order to be producing usable boost. That's not even debatable as it's a undisputed fact. And heat can absolutely damage a turbo if it's not allowed to cool down. Happened in my VW Passat years ago. And my VW CC turbo cut out in mid boost twice when it was getting too hot. This was when I first moved to Vegas and didn't realize how hot it got in the summer lol.

Your VW had a single turbo system, the Ecoboost is a twin scroll system, not the same situation. It has instant torque and keeps pushing to the end of it's powerband. In regards to top speed, that's more dependent on the gearing and electronic top limiter.

Not Many people with 4wd trucks in Vegas surprisingly. Idk...either way we beat a couple of 2.7 Ecoboost trucks...that's all we care about. Theres no point in over analyzing it lol.

Nope...doesn't matter. All current turbos function that way (even Porsche explains that in a article). Twin scroll just means it might be able to boost for a longer period of time. Because if it's the way you say....there would be 0 turbo lag.

They don't stop boosting when you are on full throttle. Maybe you can post that article so I can get what you are trying to say here. Maybe your VW had a wastegate issue? Also, Ecoboost turbos are liquid cooled.

You guys realize there are turbodiesels that run under load for literal days, right?

Modern turbos are fed constant lubrication and even coolant from the engine - they don't care about constant heat exposure any more than your exhaust valves.

Quit making up BS just because it sounds good in your head

You wouldn't have beat mine is what I'm saying :)

I'm not trying to give you a hard time, your truck beating those trucks is legit and that's what matters there.
