While installing my radar detector, I fixed my non-functioning adaptive cruise control

When I bought my truck 3 weeks ago, the ACC was not working and there was an annoying error message in the display. While I was doing the paperwork, the shop was trying to fix the problem. They were unable to fix it at the time, and I was told to make an appointment to bring it back in to have the sensor replaced. Okay, no biggie. While I had the mirror apart to install my radar detector on Saturday I noticed the camera unit seemed to be aimed awfully high. There is an adjustment screw, and I backed it out until it looked better aligned and put it all back together. I still had the error message while driving it that night, but when I started it up this morning, everything worked perfectly . The dealer did mention that it would have to be driven 30 or so miles for the system to reset. All in all, it was a super easy 10 minute fix. Why the hell the dealership was unable to do that, I have no idea. It was awfully nice to have the auto high beams working and to never have to touch the brake or gas on my way in this morning!

I will almost always try to fix an issue myself before resorting to the dealer. As this experience shows, they aren't always well equipped to properly handle things.

That is correct. Auto high beams never worked until today.

Wonder if there's a way to activate it. I have a camera behind mirror but it's only for auto highbeams. Is there a separate camera behind the mirror or only the one?

Only one camera. It's a flat box around 3x6 inches or so with one camera at the top of it. I have no idea what else would be needed to activate it. They are separate controls on the steering wheel for ACC and regular CC.

The acc won't work on mine as I don't have the lane departure sensors.. but I'm more curious in activating the forward collision avoidance.

Might have to get an alpha obd and see if there's a parameter to change for it to become active.

do you mind taking a picture of the adjustment screw when you get a chance or describe it if it is easy to find. My acc and collision wipe sensor message keeps going on and off.

Sounds like some of you guys can't wait for the driverless cars!

Automatic on headlights (twilight sentinel from years ago), automatic high beams, rain sensing wipers, lane departure correction, Auto cruise control, park sense braking, automatic climate control, etc. I like to be in control of the car I'm driving and don't think I could ever "enjoy" these features. What happened to the days where driving was fun and enjoyable? Look at my avatar. I have cars that don't even have a cup holder, and automatic anything was tied to the transmission only. My how times have changed just in my lifetime.

For some the "tech" appeals to them. In fairness you do get a break on insurance rates by having some of these new features.

Not exactly. The high beam sensor is on the back side of the mirror. The ACC Radar unit is housed in the plastic shroud attached to the windshield...it is NOT a camera. This 3X6 box is NOT for the auto high beam. It is ONLY for the ACC Cruise Control and, maybe, helps with front emergency breaking. Two totally separate issues and sensors that have nothing to do with one another. By adjusting the radar sensor (3X6 metal box), that helped to align it to function properly for ACC. However, one would think there is some type of accurate "aiming" procedure that would get it to be 100% spot-on.

The RADAR sensor in question is the finned box with the whitish connector plugged into it. The screw is at the very top below the windshield mounting bolt.

When I had my inEXPENSIVE windshield replaced, the insurance company and the glass shop stated that the acc - lane keep assist would have to be recalibrated or the system was not to be trusted. Only a mere $250 more for that piece of mind

Unfortunately, recalibration can cost between $200 and $350 based on who does it. If it were me, I would have it calibrated just to be sure since this is a part of the safety features of this vehicle and why take a chance.

Oh I paid & the insurance co. paid just the most expensive windshield I've had replaced. Just the unforseen added expense of the let me help you drive systems

yep, that calibration was expensive. Luckily, in my case insurance picked up the bill. Would have been $1100 total otherwise
