What is your oil pressure?

59 psi cold idle, 50-52 psi cruising at 70 (I use the gear +/- button to lock out MDS), 29-31 psi warm idle. Truck has Pennzoil Platinum 5W-20 in it.

Mine is about the same, using the same oil. I think the low-ish pressures are from the lightweight oil. My M5 is 70psi (higher in certain parts of the engine, as it is how the VANOS operates)

That is fine, 31 psi is normal when the motor oil is up to temp at idle. It should be over 50 psi at start-up and cold, about 40-50 psi when warm and moving at speed.

However, once it gets up to temp at idle, 30 - 35 psi is where it should be.

On the 5.7 L hemi

Mine is always above 50 when driving, higher when cold, but ... when it is all warmed up at idle it would dip under 40 psi with the factory oil, and now pushes down close to 31 psi with the new oil.

I always figured if it EVER gets under 40 psi, I have a problem. But the thing runs great.

What do you guys show? I use the center display to read this.
Several years ago on my last DS (4th gen) 1500 I actually ran an engine monitor test for oil pressure at ambient conditions versus time. These tests were at road speed. At the time my program failed to give me RPM data (my mistake), but the target then was how rapidly the 5.7 came to temperature at actual road speeds. The test circuit was the same in all the tests, which was a road route that went from 35 MPH, 45 MPH, 55 MPH in that order. This included seven full stops (stop signs).

This might provide some value to this discussion.

I have yet to run this test on my current DT (5th gen).

Best regards,
Dusty

I switched to Pennzoil Platinum and those are the exact ranges I am getting.

I just noticed mine, engine warm and at 30-55 mph my pressure was ranging between 30-35 psi. This seems way too low to me. I’m due for another oil change, currently 4,400 miles on this oil.

Hmmm, once on throttle, even when hot, it should be higher than that. 30-35 psi is the typical hot pressures when at idle. I'll check mine today see how it compares at 30 - 55 mph when warm.

that's not normal...

Changed the oil pressure sensor on my truck and the pressure was still only at 30 PSI at idle when cold. Changed the oil and oil filter, pressure came up to ~55 while cold and idling. The oil filter was much heavier than I’ve ever felt before, not sure what caused it. Was using a Mobil 1 filter with Mobil 1 synthetic 5W-20 oil.

Defective filter???
Possible but doubt it. All oil filters have a filter bypass. When the filter gets "full" or clogged, the bypass kicks in, allowing the oil to still flow but not be filtered anymore.

Pressure is determined by the amount of restriction present, the filter media being one of those restrictions. It would make sense that engine oil psi goes down the longer the same oil & filter, more so filter, is used due to the filter bypass opening up from the filter getting "full" over time.

Btw, beware of K&N air & oil filters. Their designs focus more on flow than filtering out as much as possible.

i want to jump in with hi temp and low oil PSI in case this is a thing.

if this was on my old hot rod I would have drove it into the lake to cool it off

and id be losing oil fast at 29psi looool

look it says 52* ambient outside - its suckin cold air even.

**************AND************* you're at idle. If you were going 55 down the highway and you seen this, there would be an issue.

43,000 miles.
I use Shell Rotella 5W-30 oil. Oil pressure cold indicates above 50PSI idling.
After the engine, coolant and oil are to operating temperature, oil pressure indicates above 35PSI idling.
Occasionally, I will use 5W-40. Same pressure readings.
