What is your oil pressure at idle?

Hi, I have a 22 rebel with a 5.7 etorque, got about 50,000 miles on it. Last week I decided to try something different and I went to take five oil change and today I noticed at idle I saw oil pressure as low as 26 psi I guess I’ve never paid attention before idol and I’m a little nervous about switching oil shops, anybody else know what they see for oil pressure idling at about 500 rpm. Thanks IMG_1899.jpeg

About 32 to 35 psi IIRC. Pennzoil 5W20 full synthetic. FRAM XG10060 filter.

Wellz your first mistake was going to a cheap *** oil change place that only cares about using the cheapest oils and filters, and getting as many cars through the doors as possible.

I'd be willing to bet if you changed your oil filter to a Mopar filter your pressure would be higher

I would verify the oil level as soon as possible, maybe the shop underfilled your oil level. I do not know my idle psi but my truck with a non-E torque 5.7 hemi at highway speeds (approx 65-72 mph) is usually 49 psi per the gauge cluster and I use 5w20 Penz oil Potentially Ultimate from the dealer, not sure what filter, I suspect it is a Mopar filter being done at the dealer. Due to medical issues not able to crawl up under the truck to do the work myself. :(

I'm at about 40 on a hot idle. I haven't seen 20's since I started doing my own oil changes, but I used to see high 20's for the first 5000 kms IIRC, dealer oil/filter, somewhere around 28 or 29?

Mine normal warm is 25-30 ish. Hot hot like after trailer towing in stop and go or towing highway high speed (oil temp 230-240) is 20-23 psi range. Mopar filter and Platinum 5-20. Cruising at the same temps at highway speed 47-49 psi. Just about to tick over 70k miles and pressures have been the same since new with the same oil and filters.

26 psi at 500 rpm (~206F coolant ~212F oil) 5w20 and Mopar filter

27psi Hot, 500 rpm, 0-20 synthetic , filter ?, Cold start was 53 I think. Even hot at idle If I raise the idle to 1000 it jumps right up. I think you are fine. 8000 miles.

Lowest I've seen was 28 psi on one occasion, but typically 29-31 at hot idle (at least 225F or higher oil temp)

At 200-215F oil temp, it's closer to 37 psi.

This is with either 0W or 5W-20.

so I reported 27 on a hot idle. this morning 50 plus on a cold start idle.
To the OP, your numbers are fine and should fluctuate.

Former Hemi owner here, does the 5.7 have an actual oil pressure sender/sensor? Or does it use the computer to "estimate" the pressure like the EcoDiesel?

From what I've read posted, by people more knowledgeable than most here, it's not a true oil pressure sensor.

If it was just an algorithm based on rpm/oil temp I’d have to imagine it would be showing very similar if not the same pressures for everyone here.

The trucks can sense viscosity (throwing that code for running incorrect oil). So maybe that plays into it if it’s just an estimate based on parameters.

Mine is so sensitive that it’ll actually drop 1-2
Psi when you put it in neutral at a stoplight hot taking the load off the rotating assembly. Back into gear it’ll gain that pressure back.

That all makes sense to me, appreciate the replies guys. For reference, the 3.0 liter cannoli factory under the hood of my truck pushes about 40 to 50 pounds at cold idle in gear and between 16 and 19 at hot idle in gear. If I put it in neutral at hot idle it hovers at around 19-20. At highway speeds around 1800 RPMs I’m pushing ~38 pounds. My oil temperature when cruising is usually about 205°. If I’m going fast or towing it’s around 220-230°. Running Pennzoil 5W-40!
