Maybe this is a known issue, but I'm glad I checked. I was going to replace it anyway for my winter trip so I'd have matching tires all the way around.
I'm shocked that so much rubber was removed and I would also like to know how to prevent it from happening again
I could see this ruining someone's day or entire trip
that's normal.
that's when the tire contacts the "tabs" that prevent the tire from going up too much when you crank up the spare holder.

also I need your contact info so you can clean my spare too LOL that's one outstanding job.

That's not rub er that has been removed, just an indent from where it was pulled up against the supports.
