We're Not Off To a Good Start...(Engine Replaced!!!)

To me it sounds like material (machining etc) got caught in the oil pump starving the engine of oil. When it was shut off for awhile the piece(s) fell away from the oil pick up. It will likely happen again. I’ve heard of this happening on new engines in general, although rare.

There's a screen on the oil tube pickup plus its a large pickup.
OP, what was the oil pressure?

So here it is Tuesday, and I have my truck back. We have zero idea of what happened or what the noise was. My selling dealers service manager did contact the local service writer and she verified for him the noises she heard, and what her guys did to determine their thoughts.

For 4 days- the dealership started the truck and everytime- it was quiet as a church mouse. I have calmed down tremendously since Thursday, The oil in the truck is still looking new, and nothing further was done. I'll drive the truck and at the next instance(if any) of any noise- I'll be recording. Driving it home today was just as quiet as my first week with it, and zero drivability issues noticed. For the question above on oil pressure- I did not see it at the time, but driving it today- the digital gauge was at roughly just below half.

For its first oil change- I will have my local dealer do it, and I'll then pay for my own oil analysis at that time. I will alsoask for the filter and possibly have them slice it open.

This should not be a possibility, you need to do that. IMO, that's better than an oil analysis especially on a new engine, the analysis will be full of exactly what you're looking for and hoping against

So I renamed the Thread Title-
The truck died on me yesterday and needed to be towed off the interstate. Mileage is now at 873. Was driving in very early yesterday and truck went into limp mode. I also got a message in the cluster that Active Tuned Module was either not ready, or not available- I do not remember which it was. I could maintain a highway speed, but when it came to hills, I was doing 45, with no acceleration. I thought maybe it just needed a restart, but as long as it kept running I'd rather wait until I got into work parking lot rather than try on the side of highway.

I got to work, and I could hear it rattling when I pressed the gas, and then rattling as I backed off the gas. It was NOT the same sound as I heard at beginning of month. I google searched the message in the cluster and did not find much about it. I gave the service manager a heads up via email and told him I'd try driving it there(15 to 20 minutes).

Truck died in the middle lane of the interstate...I-495 south in Tewksbury. No noises when it died, it smoked under the hood when stopped and I could smell burning electronics, or so I thought.

I just got email from the service manager...

"Good afternoon,
We did order an Engine and we are working with FCA to find out how and why the engine failed, the tone wheel on the crankshaft came apart and wedged itself in to crank journal."

I then asked him to tell me more on what the replacement engine was... rebuilt or new... long block or short block. I was told its a brand new long block.

The journey continues...

Chris

You should have let them pull your oil pan - they would have easily seen whatever debris was bouncing around the tone wheel and likely replaced your engine the first time.

I feel your mistake was not allowing the dealer that heard the noise to pull the pan. I can't really understand taking a truck to a dealer, having them confirm that there indeed could be a problem, and refusing to let them investigate further. No manufacturer is going to approve a new engine without fully understanding what the issue is. Hopefully it won't leave you stranded somewhere in the near future.
Amen! From what you've described, you've been your worst advocate for resolution. Ultimately you got bit...I still don't understand why you didn't permit them to pull the pan and/or perform other inspection/diagnostic services. Selling dealer or the nearest Ram dealer should make no difference. These trucks don't make that sort of noise every now and then, and when they do they're trying to warn you that you're about to be left along side the road. In fact, if they can prove you refused to permit them to inspect and diagnose, then you could be on the hook for a new engine. Am I missing part of the story?

Just for clarification, engines replaced under warranty situations are NOT rebuilt motors. They are new.

2019 Ram 1500 Billet Silver Laramie Quad Cab 2WD, 5.7 Hemi, 8HP75, 3.21 axle, 33 gallon fuel tank, factory dual exhaust, 18” wheels. Build date: 03 June 2018. Now at: 041803 miles.

I thought the reasons the OP refused dropping the oil pan was to avoid having his crippled Ram an excess distance from home and work being done by an unknown dealership. It slows the timeline but it adds familiarity, confidence, convenience, etc. That's being an advocate for yourself.

So sorry for this treatment. Talk about kicking a wounded dog. I am sure FCA will make it right. You were not considering Ram and you ended up getting one partly based on our comments and support from this forum. I do feel bad for the responses you are getting on this forum. No one should have issues at your mileage with a new truck. Granted in a mass produced situation, you cannot have perfection every time. Someone did not torque the Tone wheel bolts or some of them.

I, like you, do not trust the dealer that is 1000' across from me right now in my office (they have taken advantage of so many people, lied and deceived, $2500 worth of work for a simple $22 sensor that takes 30 minutes to change) that I would not let them torque a lug nut on my truck or wipe the bugs of my windshield. If my truck failed I will have it taken/towed to the next dealer 50 miles away. You opted to have the selling dealer check it out, and they reimbursed you for the Tow. That is your right to do. Its unfortunate the "problem" went away so soon as it got to the selling dealer and they did not pull the pan. It could have gone away before the first dealer scheduled the removal of the pan, they may have found nothing, not done anything at all (even told you they pulled the pan) and then it failed and "boom" (which is what happened) anytime later, anywhere.

I am sure so you will get a good loaner and they will make it right (dealers tend to treat their selling "customers" much better than transplants). This is a major repair. Check MA consumer law. You may even qualify for a new vehicle ( I know Mass tends to have strong consumer protection rules). Again, it's your truck and your option to have it serviced where you want. This failure could have resolved, stopped and happened in 5, 2000 or 20,000 more miles and better yet, while on the I93 Bunker Hill bridge in the middle of rush hour......, Best of luck and I wish you a resolution real soon so you can enjoy your purchase.

Next time I am travelling through MA, I will buy you a coffee.

Well, as much as having to deal with it sucks; its great that you are getting a new long block. I call that a win. Sometimes things get by in manufacturing and failures occur. I would rather get a new long block than have them repair that engine.

Thats unfortunate but really thats a good failure. Thats tells me that the overall structure of the engine was sound and not a problem. I also don't believe something like this would have been evident had they dropped the oil pan nor would it have been something they would have inspected. These types of failures are rare but ALL makes have had tone/reluctor ring failures as most are just pressed on the back of the crank. GM has had issues with this moving or coming off and its not until power loss that the noise and the symptoms are added up to discover the issue. I'll never understand why no one other than aftermarket also tac welds these rings on the crank

Any updates? New motor? Nice rental? Please keep us posted on the progress. I wish you the best!

Thanks nburd!
I have a Jeep Grand Cherokee to use. Its only the E version so its the strippy model. However- I am very impressed with it and would consider dumping the wifes 2016 Pilot for one. It rides and handles very well with no wallowiness in suspension.

As for my truck- it will be 2 weeks tomorrow. I stopped in last Thursday on my way home from work, as I still had no ETA or acknowledgement of when an engine would ship. This place is halfway between work and home, and I only get into office 1 day a week with Covid restrictions(saves me 100 miles a day as I work in North Reading). My intent was to stop off to get some date as to engine delivery, and if it was not known, or out some lengthy time- I was going to invoke arbitration with FCA for a new vehicle.

I drove in, and found the Service Manager- told him who I was, and I was very surprised he remembered me. He said he needed an update from Parts Dept- so we both walked over. Counter person said FCA just released the motor and ETA to dealer was the 2nd - yesterday. That being known- he said I would have the truck sometime this week.

I'll be in the office again Thursday so I'll make a pit stop and check in. I want to see if they'll give me some pics of any damage as well.

Where on the coast of Maine are you? My son lives in Eliot one house up from the Pisc river.

Thx-
Chris

Ive got some motor noise and other symptoms.

Sometimes you wish for catastrophic failure rather than the small ticks here or there so they will finally so something about it.

No worse feeling than a 18 year old kid driving your 65k truck for 2 minutes and saying its "just loud lifters."

I am hoping to call ramcares if i ever get time and they can look at it while the hood gets repainted under warranty.

A ways away, Bar Harbor.

Engine was supposed to be at dealership Monday 11/2. I emailed Service Manager this morning for progress update, and was told he has no engine,, no tracking and no ETA.
I've owned the truck for 5 weeks and its been at dealer for 2 1/2 weeks.

I have initiated a claim with RAM Customer Cares and now have a Case #.

I've also filled out the information in the link provided on 1st page by Mark @ RAM Cares

So after filing my case with RAM Customer care last week, I never did get a call back or an email from any case manager. I ended up calling in yesterday to get some idea of what was going on.

I was told that a motor arrived at their parts warehouse yesterday(they could not tell me where), and would take up to 4 days to ship to dealer. They will speak with dealer Friday.

They would not allow the return of truck or a swap to a different truck because this does not meet criteria under Mass Lemon Laws.

I guess I'm trying to figure out exactly RAM Customer Care is doing to help their customers...nothing!
Diagnosed with seized motor 10/21 and I still have no motor.

Unbelievable! Its not like you are waiting on some rare electronic gizmo, its a basic engine. Hope you get some relief soon
