Steering Issue

I have noticed on my 2019 Big Horn when turning left or right the steering wheel sort of sticks at about 1/16 of a turn. This only happens at higher speeds 40+ miles per hour and it seems dangerous.

I mostly notice when go around slight curves on highways.

On most cars, if you let go of the steering wheel during a turn, the wheel will return to center. On my truck it gets stuck at that position. You can move it past that point, but it takes more effort than normal.

Anyone else seen this? I don't really know to to show my dealer the issue as I live in an urban area where its hard to find a round with curves that allows these speeds.

That's your lane departure system...if you have the advanced safety group. Works very well, I tested it on an empty stretch of interstate and was able to keep my hands off of the steering wheel for quite some time. It's cumbersome around town as it constantly wants to correct your lane position and keep you centered in your lane.

Most likely not the lane departure system (given that OP is in a Big Horn trim). This happens in my Laramie as well and it's related to either a loose ground for the power steering (which makes for inconsistent power assist) OR a flat spot in the steering rack requiring replacement. There are several posts on here about this very issue. RAM has issued a service bulletin for the loose ground. If that doesn't solve it, it'll be a bit more of a PITA to get the dealer to replicate the "flat spot in the rack" issue. But several on here have already had their racks replaced under warranty and report that it has solved the issue.

I don't *think* this is related to the recent recall for power steering, since this pretty consistent. On normal driving, taking shallow left hand turns (say, less than 45 degrees), the steering wheel will not return to center when I let go of the wheel. I have to actively pull out of the turn...

This is exactly the problem. Thanks for the link. Hoping my dealership can reproduce the issue but I think its going to be hard. The dealership is in urban Seattle and theres not much opportunity for the speed and curves needed to reproduce.

Not going back to zero out of a turn is not a lane departure issue. The steering is faulty. They had mine in for repair back in February at 2100 miles. They kept it for 12 days after they replicated the problem and then gave it back after cleaning the grounding lugs and saying it was good to go. Fast forward to 3500 miles and it is back at the dealership. Same issue and they were able to replicate it...again. Star case has been reopened, factory technicians called in, NHSTA case number assigned to it and so far they don't know how to fix it. They have had it for 8 days so far and I was told best case scenario is sometime next week. Today's service rep call was just a courtesy of "still nothing to report; they are trying to figure it out". Technically it is already "lemon law" due to a steering issue multiple times but I really like the truck. I just want it fixed correctly and not just kicking the can down the street for another 1500 miles before it needs repair again or worse; an accident.

Had the same problem at about 4000 and dealer couldn't replicate. I thought it might work itself out, but at 27000 it still happens. Lived with it because I knew where to expect it. Am on a snowbird trip and it happened a few times with the trailer on. Now that will get your attention. Have lived with it long enough and will have to see if a dealer here in Arizona can get it done.

I’m having the same issue with my 2020 1500. Steering wheel at 45 degrees making a left hand turn has an intermittent lock. Feels kinda like the right front wheel tie rod end broke and the right wheel turned in while making a left over 40 mph. I thought at first that maybe the right front wheel got caught in a rut on the road. Not the case. Tested on a new concrete road, no ruts and same result. This is my 5th Ram, first 5th Gen. it’s never happened on the same roads as my 4th Gens. With out a doubt it’s and issue in the rack. I take it in too the dealer Thursday. I bet I’m going to get a can’t replicate the problem. It’s dangerous and needs fixed. I checked under the truck. No leaking or loose or broken suspension components. Checked the tires. Pressure is perfect and no signs of uneven tread wear.

Dropped off at the dealer Thursday. Dealer found the rack binding and needed to replace. Here’s the fun part. Dealer cost for the rack is $3000. If you bought it from the dealer it would cost $5000.... For a steering rack.... Glad it was under warranty.

Same issue here. Dangerous when hauling heavy loads on the trailer. Just reached out to find the part and no0ne has it on the aftermarket side. Dealer looks like they want $1500 or more for a new one. I'm out of warranty at 48,5XX miles on a new to me truck I bought less than a month ago.
