Steering catching taking highway speed left hand curves

So I was pulling my ATVs this weekend up through some twisting roads in the black hills, and I’ve noticed it before while pulling a trailer. But when I turn left (10 to 11 o’clock position) to go through the curve the wheel almost feels like it clicks into place, It will literally hold the wheel and not return to center if I don’t force back. It seems to only happen with weight on rear, and over 45 mph. Just wondering if anyone else has had similar issues

There’s an internal issue with the electric power steering rack. I have one on order for a customer, but they are currently on backorder with an October release date

Does your customer have the same symptoms with it only happening while pulling a trailer and higher speeds but normal in street traffic?

I live 60 miles from my nearest dealer and really don’t want to waste the gas pulling a trailer to them so they can verify it has a problem because I have a feeling they would say it’s normal with no weight since they’re telling me my wife’s 19 2 door jl rubicon is designed to wonder all over the road because it has all the newest part numbers and is in alignment specs.

I’d like to add that mine is an 8-18 build pickup but don’t know the actual date so would that tsb possibly be the fix if it falls in that time?? The tsb made it sound more like an all the time steering issue

The TSB 19-002-18 is referring to a clunk felt in the steering. This is a different symptom but still the same repair. My customer did not have a trailer attached but I was definitely able to duplicate the concern at highway speeds. And it got worse the longer I drove it.

As for the Wrangler, we’ve fixed most of them with the updated steering stabilizer (Recall V41) and an alignment with the toe set to the more positive end of the specs. You will definitely wander more with a 2 door though, just how it is. Longer wheel bases are more stable.

8/18 Build Date. I had it happen three times on a slight left curve around 50 MPH. Shocked me the first time because I thought my steering was completely failing. I couldn't duplicate it if I wanted to. I'm sure mine will completely fail around the 3 year 36,00 mile mark. I don't think there is a TSB on it; but FCA should compile data and figure out if they have a bad batch of racks. This is something that should be investigated and recalled because it is a safety issue when your wheel will not return to center and you have to force it. I'm going to report it to my service manager next time in. If they don't correct it or can't duplicate it then I will report it to NHTSA.

I guess I could somewhat say it’s a clunk when it happens, And it holds the steering wheel when it does. Kinda scary, first noticed it pulling ATVs over continental divide on I70 heading to Moab in May. I also live in a basically curveless nebraska.

The wrangler has had the v41 campaign done before we bought it which I confirmed with part numbers and toe set to .36 total (right was out from factory). I had a 14 2 dr with same size tires and I could drive it with my knees if I had to. This one always have to keep hand on it, wants to pull with the crown of road and whips to other side of road when passing. When going through same curves with it a right hand turn takes a 1 o’clock and coming back it takes a 9 to 10 o’clock input to do both. My 76 j10 with caster and camber out of spec drives better, and my 14 drove way better with 4 inches less of wheel base.

Check out TSB 02-009-19. Applies to JLs with build dates 10/15/2017 - 01/22/2019. It involves replacing the front track bar with updated part number 68394087AA.

I believe when customers first started complaining about this issue, engineering was already aware of it and producing a front track bar with stiffer bushings.

You need a new steering rack. Had this exact issue, fought like hell to get it replaced under warrantee, problem is now 100% gone. The TSB about “steering clunk” (#?) is the one I highlighted, however my truck was not in the date range. Message @RamCares here on the forum and wait for a case worker to be assigned to you (this is a phone tag headache FYI). Get a video of the issue clearly happening and upload to YouTube so the case worker can stream it and actually watch it. Case worker will contact your chosen service department. When you arrive for the initial service visit show them the video but DO NOT mention forums (they hate that). Truck will need to be driven continuously by service tech for approx 45min at highway speed for the heat from the engine to warm the rack sufficiently for the left curve sticking/binding symptoms to materialize. This is not a feasible excercise for the service dept so suggest a tech with a long commute take it overnight. I got this far with my service dept and they basically just reached out to their warrantee approval guy at FCA and had him sign off on applying the TSB even though it was out of the date range. Be respectful and non-argumentative and mention the safety concern. You basically need them to want to help you out, because getting the issue to repro on a quick test drive is nearly impossible. That’s what worked for me anyway. Good luck.

Thanks for the suggestions, luckily I’m hoping mine falls under the tsb with my build date, my only problem is it only happens with a loaded trailer and I don’t have sharp enough curves that I can go 45+ mph in 60 miles of me to replicate it for a video.

It already has that track bar installed, it’s an 3/19 build jl, and they still don’t have a new ae version of steering box for 2 doors that’s fixing the 4 doors with these issues.

If it's temperature related, I might try duplicating the issue with a hot air gun while the vehicle is lifted in the garage.

Thanks for posting. I've noticed this since owning the truck. Feels like I'm driving over uneven pavement when steering slightly to the left at speed.

I'll be talking to the service department too...

Mine also does this- constantly. I haven’t attempted to get it fixed yet.
