FYI,

I have a 2020 Laramie Crew Cab and I have the clank when the brake pedal is pressed. It seems to be related to the auto parking brake as I turned it off and it didn't happen when set manually, at least in my truck so far.

After about 1,500 miles I never heard the clank again regardless of what I do. Before that, if I remote start, it would never clank, only when pressing the brake hard when pressing the start button. I didn't use the auto parking brake because I like to put it in neutral, set the brake, let it settle and then put it in park. Its a habit I've had for years when parking automatics so there is no pressure on the transmission pawl.

Hi @sllky - Should you have to address this with your dealer, our team is just a private message away and we are happy to provide an additional layer of support for that process.

I have 2020 1500 Laramie with the same problem. It's intermittent and neither the dealer or myself can replicate it at will. Sounds like a large hammer is hitting the bell-housing. Ram should address this as it's obviously not a one off. I love my Ram but already had the gas tank replaced because it was leaking when refueling!

Mine does it.... But I really don't care, nor am I stressed about it.
That's how I feel about it. I will mention it when I go for my first service but it doesn't really bother me. It's obviously related to the auto park and I also think it has to do with how you are park. I park on my driveway which is slightly at an angle, there is probably more pressure put on it which causes the clank. Doesn't happen for me when I am park on flat surfaces such as my street. Perhaps it will be a recall one day.

Someone know the reason for this sound when start up my RAM ? Clank Noise!
I’m so frustrated!!!

I have same problem. Occasionally the parking pawl is not enmeshed between the parking gear teeth when you select Park on the gear selector knob. Therefore, when you start the engine, random application of torque to the P4 planetary gear causes it to rotate ever so slightly. The parking gear is splined to the P4 planetary carrier. It therefore rotates causing the parking pawl to snap into the space between the parking gear teeth making a banging noise which in my vehicle sounds like a backfire. You can confirm by manually releasing the parking pawl before starting. The release mechanism is located behind a small plastic panel lower left of steering wheel. You pull on the lanyard and the pawl is retracted away from the parking gear. This feature allows towing the vehicle if battery is dead. When the parking pawl is manually retracted, you should not hear the noise upon start up. To insure the parking pawl is enmeshed between parking gear teeth when you park the vehicle, try selecting park and let your foot off the brake, then pull on the electronic brake switch. This procedure may allow slight rotation of the P4 planetary gear and allow the pawl to drop into the parking gear teeth.

Hi Folks, greetings from Chile.
Add me to the list. 4 weeks ago, I got my brand new 1500 Laramie Sport 2021, HEMI 5.7.
It´s 800 miles and from day 1: same clanking issues. I did a LOT of research and so far here´s what i have:

- Mostly, there are three different annoying sounds on the RAM´s.

a) The classic and truly hated HEMI "tick". This is not generally mentioned for brand new RAM´s but with a very high level of confidence, this issue will arise once you hit something around 30K or so. According the research, this is a HEMI design issue, totally degenerative, related with the lifters / camshaft., due to poor lubrication. Fingers crossed to see this solved in the last generations of Hemi engines...

b) Some secuencial ticks or clanks right after the start up process. This is usually with a fixed pattern so probably, there is nothing to be worried about as these unpleasant ticking noises are related to actuators or relays in a on-off-on self checking sequence. I have this sounds in my truck all the time. Pretty normal

c) The random clank on start-up which is a single and noisy hit. Very concerning for a high value truck. So far, this clank seems to be random, 30-40% of the times and seems to be related to the brake / parking interaction. Unfortunately, my truck it´s not the exception and i have this strong "clank" in a 3/10 starts rate. After reading some threads, i tested making the start up only using remote.... surprise, no more clank. Not a single one in more than 30 starts. However, if i use the brake again, the clank is back in the same proportion. No answer from two different dealers. They have just said, It´s normal.... we cannot replicate the sound.... It´s important to mention that by not using remote start but activating the auto parking brake system, the proportion of "clanks" comes down. Still a mystery.

Regards!

Hi, as mentioned above or in another post, if you apply the brake (cause you have to), press the start button but then lift off your foot right away, no clank! This has worked for me as I was getting the clank and when I forget to do this function (ie leave my foot on the brake) I get the clank, hope this helps?!

Mine does it too; just not every start. The dealer couldn't duplicate it. I think its just drivetrain slack and dependent upon how it was parked. If you find out otherwise and get it fixed; please post the solution. I have given up on reporting it.
I have 2020 dodge 1500 Laramie . And I get the clanking sound as well about 2 out of 20 starts. Dealership told me it’s Active grille shutter . Not sure I believe it. I have 3500 miles on the truck and it’s been doing it since I got it. It’s annoying.

I haven't heard the clank in a year since removing my foot from the brake while cranking

It's definitely not the Active Grille Shutter. My Big Horn does not have Active Grille Shutters and I get the clanking noise sometimes when starting with my foot firmly on the brake.

Tried playing with the brake during startup... since most agree it doesn't happen during remote starts.

Try applying very slight pressure to the brake and release as soon as the starter engages. For my experience it makes no clank.

Apply heavy brake pedal pressure throughout the starting process and the clank is there.

More investigation to follow.
I find that to be the case as well. If the parking brake is set to work automatically, I get the clank every time I start it up. If I dont have the electronic brake on, it does not make that sound. That being said, if I have a very light pressure on the brake pedal when I start it up, and release it as soon as the engine kicks on, I get no noise even with the auto e brake activated.

Mine sounds more like a short rattle/metallic clank upon cold start up. Is this the same thing you guys are hearing? It bugs the hell out of me but seems to only happen on a cold start (sitting all day, regardless of outside temperature). I was thinking it was the stock exhaust manifold rattling but now this thread has me maybe second guessing that.

I've had that once when parked facing downhill .I also have the manifold issue .parts on back order .my symptoms are very loud on passenger engine side .as if I didn't have exhaust system type sound then it.goesmaway after warming upi just got the clank today .I was also parked downwards slightly but also had the auto brake on. It makes sense to disengage the auto brake .I have felt the truck roll into park before using auto brake e brake and it didn't move so do we have to always use e brake? I will be turning it off .

I did what the guys above said and as soon as I hit the start button I take my foot off the brake and it’s never made the sound since :) I had my manifolds checked and they’re all good actually! Good luck, hopefully that takes care of your issue too
