Spark plug change - 2019 Ram 1500 w/ 5.7

I thought the were actually pretty easy to change when I did mine. They are all on the top of the engine so access is pretty simple. The swivel socket is a must. I know it needs to be smaller diameter than a standard spark plug socket to fit through the hole in the valve cover.

Easy but a pita I had to buy a swivel socket and a magnetic retriever to hoist down the spark plugs in the back cylinders haha

They weren't difficult at all...Used a magnetic swivel socket...threw an old blanket over the motor and laid down on top and knocked them out in about 45 minutes.

This isn’t the infamous Triton V8 w/ the spark plug issues. A swivel and small extension is all you need, you’re not going to break a spark plug unless you’re a cave man. I think you guys gotta go wrench sometimes and stop psyching yourself out thinking you’re going to do something wrong. Also you shouldn’t be having to swap them out until around the 100k mark.. iridium plugs after all. It’s not the old every 30k method unless you’re running into issues.

I’m not sure why you would refer to them as inferior? I changed mine last summer and put 10k or so on the truck and they’ve been great.

I suppose I should have added I was being sarcastic. The quality of those plugs speak for themselves. I was only voicing what I would expect EVERY dealer to say. In fact, I installed new AC Delco plugs in a friend's 06 V6 3400 Impala. Later he took it to a dealer for other work, and the actually SLAMMED those AC Delco plugs!

etorque, but shouldn't matter

I just did mine with the E torque it does make a diff you have a support bracket on drivers side that only can be loosened not removed and it is a son of a gun to slide around to get to coil packs. the video on this thread is the one I used , the drivers side will take a few hours just take your time.

took me longer to get that bracket out of the way then to do the last 2 coil packs ,

I have to say my B\S detector is on and no way you did the 16 plugs on the 5th gen hemi E Torque or non in 45 minutes , Bull **** !

HMMM i did my non-e about that fast. the biggest fight is the 2 closest to the firewall that sits under the booster. other than that, its a breeze. used my Milwaukee ratchet and zipp zipp ole son!

Cool Bruh...learn a lot working on planes for 20+ years, mainly digging in and getting **** done and not overthinking it. 6 of the 8 cylinders are free and clear of obstructions. the aft cylinders on the drivers side are tough but no where near as difficult as people make them out to be. Like I said, thrown a blanket on the motor and lie down and knock them out.

Driver side definitely sucked. The 2 far back wasn't as bad as the 2 in front of those next to booster. Especially when trying to get the plug out once loose. Luckily I had a swivel I could use. I'm just glad it's done and not gonna have to do ever again. After 200K they will stay

Can anyone post a picture or a name/identifier for this socket everyone is talking about above? When i clicked the Amazon link it switches me to Amazon US (I'm in canada) and then just defaults to the main Amazon page so I can't see what the tool is you're all using. It's either because I'm international or it's not available anymore but I'd love to know what it is so i can find one. Anyone find a torque rating for them or are we all doing the old spark plug metod of a certain amount of turn passed hand tight? Thanks!

I don’t follow the torque rating just hand tighten it with an extension then stick on the torque wrench and tighten just a little bit changed it twice and my car is at 120k miles driving like new you’ve got this!

Tackled this today…. Tried to use my normal spark plug sockets, and then using the coil pack to remove the loosened plugs…. After the first plug I just broke down and drove into town for the $13 (Canadian) magnetic socket and that worked just dandy….

Once you are in the groove it’s really not as intimidating as it is made out to be, did the plugs and the PCV valve, and ill say the worst set was the passenger side rear with the HVAC hoses in the way…. First time in a while I’ve been under hood and didn’t donate blood !!

I did what Rammer above did for “torque”, and the plug themselves didn't seem too bad (though I’m used to reading 2 stroke plugs lol) I’ve put on about 70k miles in the last year mostly interstate and am glad I broke down and got it done!

Especially glad after neglecting the under hood, boy, dirt and debris collects everywhere so I ended up doing an engine bay clean afterwards, and very happy with those results

Now that all that is out of the way, time to treat the ol girl (or me) with something special!

I did a search, hoping I’d come across something, but nothing really answered my questions.

Saw a couple of “PITA” references to changing the back 4 on the drivers side by the brake booster, and that’s my main concern. So hoping someone has experience with doing this.

Mine is not the hybrid engine. Just a normal 5.7 in a 2019 5th Gen NBS.

I’m looking for tips / tricks on how to get those 4 out and in, as well as which plugs are recommended.

Dealer and mechanics shop down the road costs were both insane - $1130 was average. Using factory plugs which I’m seeing in the Mopar parts site at about $23.10 each x 16 = 369.60. So they are charging me $760.40 for labor / shop items.

The most expensive plug listed for my truck at Autozone is an NGK for $14. So $14 x 16 = $224. Do it myself, I save over $900, but may lose my sanity with those 4 plugs on the drivers side.

Thoughts, suggestions, plug recommendations (anyone know the make / model of the stock plugs?), etc… are all welcome.

Oh… and YouTube, which is my go-to for this stuff, isn’t being good to me today. No good vids so far of my make / model / engine combo. Close, but some differences in access. Plus, no really good tips found so far.

In the back by the booster I used a 1/4 drive ratchet to get the coil packs off , the a small 3/8 drive I got harbor freight, with 3 inch ext and spark plug socket the low profile helps , it is not fast for those back 4 , but it can be done I ordered my NGK thru amazon I think the 16 plugs cost 180.00
