SO Hurricane at drag strip

3.21 will be faster for a roll or top end pull from highway speeds, 3.92 will be better from a launch. There is no free lunch in rear gearing you either give up low end or top end. Can’t have both.
I was just thinking, is it possible lower axle ratios could, at times depending on track conditions, allow wheel spinning on launch thus costing time? Maybe the 3:21s wouldn't be so quick to "break loose". I don't know what the answer is, track conditions, tire abilities, driver all play into the equation.

Taller gears usually prevail in the 1/4 of you know what you’re doing. It’s about the drivers ability, and the setup. 3.21s are definitely not drag gears.

Best gear ratio depends on the entire combo. From engine powerband, launch RPM, transmission gear ratios, finishine RPM, tire size.... Especially in the 1/4 mile where a taller gear can out you into a situation where you need to shift into higher transmission gear shortly before finish line
 
Higher numbers are always better for drag racing (lower quarter mile times). Back in the day we ran 4.56 or 4.88's. Gas mileage sucked though!!!

Not really, it depends on a lot of other variables, mainly the torque curve. Numerically lower gears in a modern 8-10 speed trans can be both quicker and faster than numerically high gears because they keep the engine in peak power longer.
That said, this truck is likely a 3:55 or a 3:92 as you cant get 3:21 in a 4x4 and that truck has a 4x4 badge on it.

The guys building bonkers blown f150 coyotes for the quarter mile are speccing the lowest 3.31 axles.

That still doesn't apply across all set ups. If you.have your combination built to use a 3.21 gear, switching to a 3.92 or 4.10 could actually slow you down in 1/4 mile. Requiring an extra shift, or putting you out of your power and in upper RPMs in the higher gear

Thats because of the massive amounts of torque that combo makes. keeping the engine in the power band and less shifting is always going to be quicker

No, its the torque and time spent in the powerband; this is also why I dont like the 3.92 in the SO and especially the HO, wayy too much gear for that much power. 550 tq from the HO and 3.92's are going to make for an annoying combination with no time spent in the meat of the torque curve because of the rear gear. That truck running a 13.9 converted 1/8th is an easy tune away from 12 sec 1/4 et's
