Slam goes the Trans!!

Has anyone had this happen. Bought the truck and no problems at all with the shifting. I had a friend come over after the truck sat in the driveway for an hour or so to take a look/ test drive. We got in to leave on level ground... he started and then shifted to D and nothing happened. The truck which would normally start to creep forward when the brake is released just sat there. He waited a few seconds and gently pushed on the gas and Bang!! the whole truck slammed and the truck began to move. It was a real loud transmission slam and has never done before or after. Thoughts?

Take it to the dealer, maybe they didn't get the transmission filled properly.

@Nebidok, I had this happen twice in my laramie. Both before 300 miles. The first time it hit so hard it chirped the back tires! It hasn't happened in about 500 miles. Have about 750 miles on it now.... Fingers crossed.

Did he have his seat belt on? The auto parking brake doesn't release when you aren't buckled before you put it in drive. Even if you buckle after its in D, you still have to manually push the parking brake switch. If you try (forcefully) to drive away with the parking brake on, it will release automatically in a not very pleasant fashion, because of all the driveline windup and force on the rear brakes.

Yep. My Laramie has been in the shop for just over a month now getting a new transmission. It had 43 miles when it went in. The number of posts about this issue is growing.

Negative. If you buckle the belt after drive is selected it will release the brake - there's a small delay, but it will allow you to roll away with just a touch of throttle.

These have been god transmissions. The parking brake is likely the issue. I replicated the OPs experience accidentally. Since that time, I turned the auto parking brake off.

He did have it on and the parking brake had never been engaged up to that point. It has now been 8 more days and has not happened again. I will keep you posted. Thank you for the seat belt tip I had not heard or read about that.

Was the truck put into any four wheel modes while you were sitting there without any rotation and then 2wd was selected and put in gear?

I just hit 500 miles, it has happened twice, first time scared the crap out of me, and I looked like a fool as it lurched forward like I dropped the clutch in a parking lot. now I am looking for it, second time brake was off, it didn’t roll forward like transmission was engaged so I went back to neutral and then to drive and it engaged and creeped forward like usual. I will check the fluid level.

Others are seeing this issue, I believe there has been a TSB generated by FCA for this issue. Search this forum, it should be a quick find.

Happened to me as well when i had around 500 km.
Now at 6,000 Km and bringing back to the dealer tonight for a third time because my engine light has come on again.

Just had the no action from P to D today at around 200 miles. Just sat there. Turned off truck, turned back on and did the same thing. Then went to N to R to P to D and it worked. No idea but if it does it again my dealer is getting a call

Yup. I'm expecting to take delivery of my Limited in about a week and a half, and believe me I'm watching this very closely.

Mine and other folks' new RAM trucks are doing it too, as documented in below link to Forum thread related to this exact same problem... So that's at least three (3) forum threads here documenting this safety issue. Plus all the other people who now own these trucks and are not active on this forum. Must be hundreds/thousands of trucks affected??
