Rear window trim is warped?

I'm jumping in late to the discussion to see if anyone has found a resolution to this issue.

Dealer replaced my entire rear window assembly due to this problem, and just two weeks later, the new window piece had also warped like it was melted.

My dealer has now inspected the third brake light and found no evidence of overheating.

What could possibly be doing this?

Hi deanfx, Maric550 and SD Rebel,
We would be happy to have this documented for you as well as connect you with a case specialist to work with while having your dealer address this! Our team is available via private message if this is something you would be interested in.

Alex, if you're still taking names and reports...this one is stumping me and my dealer (who's been great in handling this, BTW)

I have a theory, but it's only a theory. I think the plastic trim warping is caused by the sun reflecting off of something and hitting the plastic pieces just right. I see that you have a tool box in the back of your truck... that might be reflecting and focusing the sun at your back window, causing it to get hot. That said, the materials used on these trucks are questionable in quality and frankly these trim pieces should be capable of withstanding moderate levels of heat. Much like the common plastic rear window frame cracking due to the unacceptable thermal expansion properties of the polymer used in the frames, the plastics used in the trim pieces on these windows are also made of inferior materials.

I would add to this the fact that the tool box lid is sitting quite high, and sits near that plastic piece. And when the sun beats down on it there is sufficient residual heat coming from the metal to soften and deform the plastic trim piece.

MToffroad, is that toolbox actually black, or is it just reflecting the darkness from the rear window?

The piece is an individual trim piece not part of the frame? I have a scratch in mine and thought I had to live with it. Do you have a part number on your paperwork?

I know this is an older thread, but was hoping to get some info on this. I just purchased a 2020 Big Horn three weeks ago and noticed a scratch in this location. Talking with my dealer as I’m not sure if the vehicle had the scratch on the lot. If they insist it did not (even though I’m not sure how this would have happened within 3 weeks of barely driving the vehicle) I guess I’ll have to deal with it.

If they are not able to take care of it for me did you end up repairing the part on your own? If so, pretty simple to do?

Give me a break LOL...if someone were trying to get into a locked truck they wouldn't take the time to remove the slider trim, they'd break out the back window. They don't sound too bright to me, are you sure you want them working on your $50k truck?

Is it leaking in the rain or carwash?, ill check mine when the sun comes up before work

Saw this today. The warp is right above the sliding rear window. It's kinda hard to see but it's there. Almost creased looking. Is anyone else's like this? I can't feel anything, like it's under the glass part.

Following up on this. My dealer got the part in and took care of it for me at no charge. I brought my truck in and was out within an hour - they even washed it for me. The trim is a peel and stick piece held to the window frame with space-age double-sided tape. :) Good as new.
GOOD AS NEW.....SO YOUR SAYING IT'S STILL WARPED?

Mines not leaking but I do live in the hi desert so not too many opportunities for it to leak. To be honest when I first saw it I thought the same thing. Need to call them and see if my truck is done. We will see.

Mine is not warped but definitely all scratched and faded. Pretty cheap low quality plastic that's for sure.

Had the same issue, showed it to the dealer during an oil change appointment (bought the 2 full syn changes coupon for $100, to good of a deal to pass up) and they showed it to the body shop and of course it said that it was normal.

so I ordered a new one (about $25) and using a hair dryer for heat replaced it and now it looks great.

Of course they said it was normal 🙄. I will try my dealership first and if that doesn't work I will go your route, thanks for the info.

Is this a common issue? I got my rear window replaced a month and a half ago and the trim pieces look distorted the last few days. Running my hands a long them they feel smooth though. Strange to me. Maybe it’s just the way the plastic is? Up close it looks fine and doesn’t show the melting signs like some pictures in this thread. Standing next to the truck though you can definitely tell. Rear defroster might cause something or sun reflection? I might have to look at some trucks on a dealer lot

Checked the dealer lot. A lot of the 2023 were like my 2020 with my new rear window. So makes sense.

Hey all, just wanted to chime in on this. Just took delivery of a 2020 Rebel and the plastic trim under my sliding window looks like it was heated up with a heat gun and severely warped. Looks like there might be an issue with this new gloss black plastic used on the rear windows on 2019+ trucks. There isn't anything electrical located at that position, so what could possibly cause this?

I have the same problem on my 2019 limited. However it’s on both upper and lower trim pieces. Does anyone know where I can get replacement pieces other than the dealer?

Feel free to search on the part numbers posted earlier in this thread. Looks like there are lots of other places online, but the prices were no better than what you'd pay a dealer.
