I have a 2020 Ram 1500 Laramie and I started hearing a humming sound coming from the rear end. Took the truck in and they said they needed to change the ring and pinion gear. The dealership cannot get the part and they have had my truck since March 15. Has anyone else had this issue?

Welcome to the forum . I haven't heard about that before but that doesn't mean it hasn't happened . The part shortage really sucks . I've heard wait times are huge through all manufacturers lately .

Hopefully they have given you a loaner vehicle, and you have worked out a deal with @RamCares about making your payments for you while it's been sitting at dealer.

Yep. My rear diff got rebuilt 6.5k miles ago and it’s about to get rebuilt again. Noise started VERY slightly about a week ago and has now escalated and can’t hear my own thoughts.

Insanely frustrating. I had to wait 3-4 weeks for the initial rebuild to be complete and i’m sure it isn’t going to be better this go round.

The parts are available if they request them on "special handling". There is stock at dealers.

2019 1500 Limited here with 3.92 rear axle.

I'm having (I think) the same problem and was told it is the same culprit. The sound is hard to describe other than being a humming or whining sound that gets louder with speed, coming from the rear end. The dealer looked at the vehicle today and called to let me know the ring gear is failing in the rear diff. Thankfully I have an extended warranty that will cover the repairs after a $200 deductible. They also want to go ahead and replace the remaining drive train fluids. Some parts are on back order so we'll see how long it takes to repair.

Kinda strange this is failing with only 66k miles on the vehicle. I just about never tow with the vehicle (shouldn't have bought the gear upgrade). Not sure if it's relevant but have done mild off-roading occasionally.

If rear differential is considered part of powertrain, then you are still under factory warranty. I'm not sure how Ram defines it for warranty.

That is a good point that I need to get some clarification on. Screenshot 2022-08-22 122820.png

Edit: Actually looks like I'm just past the mileage limit for the powertrain limited warranty.

2021 Laramie 4x4 w/ ORP. 3.92’s and locker. Bought it brand new, and just hit 78k today. It’s had TWO rebuilds now, and the noise is back under 5k miles since the 2nd rebuild.

All interstate miles with no towing. Only used the locker MAYBE 15 times.

Humming started and got to unbearable. Sounds like rear brakes were worn out and metal rubbing on metal. If you have ever had breaks that were worn to the rotor that’s exactly what it sounds like. That’s what I thought it was at first but the vibration was not felt at the btake pedal like worn brakes would do. So I called dealership and they can’t get me in til the 22nd of July. Looked up a great differential shop in Clovis Calicornia called AXEL PROS. Went to the shop, the owner went on a ride with me. Before we left the parking lot he diagnosed my problem and told me he thought I might have caught it early enough that minimal damage might be the outcome. He took it in the next day. Called me and told me the bearings that are located in the differential were worn out. The pinion bearings. He said the only thing on the bearing was a stamp “KOREA” nothing else. So I am to understand that RAM is using foreign made parts in an American made vehicle. Now I’m not naive and I understand that it happens all the time. I was going to pursue the warranty because it is part of the power train and I had 59,035 when it started the noise. But I really didn’t trust the dealership to rebuild my differential to factory specs. I’m glad I didn’t. The shop i took it to rebuilt it with American made products and he did such a great job. He sent me picks as it was being repaired and pics of the worn parts. Luckily I did catch it before it caused more damage. But to fail at 62,000 miles I was told seemed really premature. These usually last until around 100,000 miles or more. And to be clear I don’t tow anything. I towed once and that was 2 years ago and my truck has been in 4 low once and in 4 hi a hand ful of times. The photo is the worn bearings. Hope this helps diagnose real differential noise. It seems to be happening more often in the newer 1500 trucks. The parts distributor said it seems to be happening more that Ram is using these in hopes that they don’t fail before the standard warranty lapses. And if you have the extended warranty I would think you could expect the same parts to be put in. And hopefully the right way. This shop AXEL PROS in Clovis, CA got me in and out just an overnight stay. Reasonable, professional, and I can’t say enough. By the way I drive a 2021 1500 Hemi Limited Night Edition with a 3:21 rear axel anti spin. Love the truck just wish I could have more confidence in the wear and tear.

Nothing like jumping in after your customer has already taken care of the issue......I would imagine sending him a check for the repairs would be a good way to help.
