Hey Guys,

This has been one of my favorite forums and communities yet. So thank you guys for all of the insight and helpful tools. I am here simply to show you what I walked out to yesterday morning and my truck has been at the dealership since. I do not know what it is but the level of knocking was on a different level. Now the video shows the worst part of it. I restarted a few times and it would be much more subtle but regardless 100% rythmatic. So...jesus take the wheel. I love this truck but this does make me SUPER F'n upset and somewhat nervous...less than 1.5k miles on it...I open for any suggestions or how to handle the situation. So far the dealership says they hear it and are working on it but the havent been able to mimic the level of sound in the video.

I'll keep you guys posted as the dealer ship provides feedback.

If they ever find out what it is; I would surely like to know. I had a 2012 Wrangler that made the same noise on a startup one day; scared the heck out of me. I started it three times in a row and it made that exact noise (like your first video). So, I called the dealership and they sent a tow truck to pick it up. When they got it to the dealership and off the tow truck; they couldn't duplicate the sound. I drove it for another 50,000 miles before I sold it and it never made the sound again.

Yea man, I will keep you posted. Happy you never had to hear that noise again.

Hi dyelife,
We certainly understand why this may be frustrating. Has a case been opened on the Customer Care side to add additional assistance while working with your case manager? If not, please feel free to send our team a private message and we would be happy to get this process started for you!

Wild guess, but if it were mine, I would reach down behind the running boards near the front and lay hands on each of the ATMM's (black round cylinders, ~4" across, mounted at an angle outside of the frame) to see if they were robot uprising on you. They are designed to shake the frame opposite of what the engine does to make everything buttery smooth but they might be able to go jackhammer on you - and it would shake the whole truck.

If you can rule that out, I'd do the long screwdriver to the ear (poor man's stethoscope) on everything with moving parts to find what's banging.

I have not, but I will send a PM to your team. What kind of assistance or help does that provide?

Thank you,

If I read this before I had it towed to the dealer, I would. I will check this as well once its returned and keep it noted for future reference. Thank you!

UPDATE: I don't know what to expect but the first feedback I received is they believe it could be the e-torque system. Now, may I ask any of you with mechanical knowledge that when you hear my video, does that sound like an alternator? They want to keep the truck until Monday to give it a couple days to sit even though my scenario was daily driver and it was just a cold every day start. So at the moment I am doing my best to not lose my mind of the dealership because its not their fault but I just am not sure where to go with this. If they say as they have "We can't mimic" the noise, wtf do I do? Any and all help is incredibly appreciated. I intend on being there Monday to show/be there/hear it with them. I feel its almost so new that these guys don't even know what they are suppose to sound like.

I loaded a second video now, which was done after the first one in the same situation. I restarted my engine atleast 5 times, this one is a bit quieter but undoubtly noticeable.

Did you happen to touch the outside of the frame module? or better yet, unplug it to confirm if the shaker within is oscillating wrong?

I know it's something the dealer should care more about (but they made a sale, that's all they care about, I believe brands should have service only stations).. but..

if you get yourself a mechanics stethoscope, you can make quick work of pinpointing where a sound is coming from just buy listening to the intensity/volume of the sound.

good luck! if you were closer i'd even drop by to take a look

Sincerely appreciate that response. I do hope their "lead mechanic" has this as a default practice. I really love this truck and I definetly want to avoid going down a lemon path. Which again is taking it pretty far from not knowing what it is yet. I just can't see how the e-Torque system would cause such a noise. But I am no mechanic, so who knows. Again thank you for the response.

The only moving part to eTorque is the motor generator which is identical mechanically to an alternator. It's got bearings and windings and I suppose it could make this noise but it would be very easy to diagnose by putting a long screwdriver tip on the housing (while running) and your ear up to the handle.

Any rookie could figure out if that was the cause. I suspect something else.

Agreed, and I guess the ultimate question here is what would you guys do in my situation? If they come back on Monday and say they still can't replicate it...should I force them to swap out the truck? Can I even do that? I am a mean SOB, even though that may not play in my favor here so I am trying to keep calm. But, I am reluctant to get back in that truck....not because its RAM, I love this truck....but love aside... would any of you set foot back in that truck? What would you do? I just can not imagine the Video 1 sound did NO damage to my truck...or am I over exagerating...? Lot's of beer in my near future...

I suppose it depends upon how many miles you have on your truck. Since it is only 1.5K; then at least you have the incident documented and you have plenty of warranty left. Personally, I would do exactly like I did when my Jeep made a similar noise….and that is to drive it like a bat out of hell for a month or two to see if something breaks. I seriously doubt that a buyback or swap is even an option right now since nothing has been diagnosed aside from a noise. Since you asked; yes, I would set foot back in that truck and drive it hard for a while.

Makes sense. Appreciate that feedback man.

I've heard flywheels make a noise like that when they get a Crack in them. The flex plate will actually move and rattle. Water pumps will sometimes make a rattle too.does it have any metal coweling on the engine that might be loose. A sticking lifter can also make a rattling noise.

UPDATE: 9-10

The mechanic I spoke with from the dealership was ready for me to pick up the truck this morning after talking yesterday. No repairs, no mimicking the sound and pretty much....bring it back if it does it again type of scenario. To me, this wasn't acceptable. So I spoke with the Head Hancho at the service department. He sent the video to multiple connections both delaer ships and manufactuer connects here locally to research. He was able to hear it himself when starting the truck, it was minimal and quieter but none the less...the Manager hears it....

So, the thing is, they still don't know what the problem is. He believe it is the e-Torque system having calibration issues and the truck itself trying to start up but getting confused between the two systems...this is laymens terms obviously. Either way, he orders the new e-Torque system entirely to install and hope it helps. What he did notice though, was the part numbers when they order start at A1, A2...then will go to AB, AC, AD once they exeed A9. The significance behind this is, he noticed these parts are now being orders which could be a "good" thing depending on how you look at it. So, its not for sure but this is their first step and I do feel 100% better working with this guy versus the grunt. Not that he did anything wrong, just he didn't do much else. I had to go higher...which is kind of sad.

So....5 Days for the part to get here. I'll give you all an update soon.

Thank you,

I am not sure man, but that sounds like a legitiment check list to go through. I actually sent the Manager I am working with now the link to this forum. Hoping one of the responses may provide some insight or ideas.

Thanks for the response.

interesting. If it is related to the e-torque system I think you are the only one with a major issue with that piece of component.
