I am new here and need some advice. I am the proud owner of a brand spanking new 2021 rebel 5.7 hemi 4x4. I have searched the owners manual and looked online at mopar in my account registered with my vin number. No where can i find the recommended oil change intervals nor the recommended fluids to use. I would assume that the hemi likes synthetic like most other engines of today. But i find no recommended vistcosity (maybe on fill cap of engine but havent looked) no recommendation of type of oils to use. I do my own wrenching and though i am currently at only 1250 miles i dont wont to wait until the last second to get this information. So i am thowing out the questions of at what millage for first oil change, then the interval going forward, what type of oil and viscosity is recommended.

Any advice from those of you that proper answers would be greatly appreciated.

I've been told here on the forum as well as by the dealer’s service techs that the hemi comes from the factory with non-synthetic oil (regular dino oil). I just got another flyer advertising 3 semi-synthetic blend changes for $70 from 5 local RAM dealers.

Problem is, “semi-synthetic” is a made up term that never says what % synthetic it is. Could be 1%, 99% or somewhere in between.

There’s several oil change threads on here already, with the usual spread of old farts like me who change it quite early (first at about 1000 miles) and then after quite often (every 3,000) to those who just use the mileage minder (around 7-8,000 miles). You’ll be told it’s wasteful to change it so early and others will say oil is cheap, motors aren’t. YMMV.

10k miles max and oil must meet FCA standard ms-6395. 5w20. Page 379 in my manual.

First oil change is up to you, many others and myself included prefer a shorter change for the first one due to all the break-in.
The manual states to follow the oil monitor and not to exceed 10,000 miles. My personal experience has been ~7,500 miles is nearly 0%.
It holds 7qts of 5w-20.

As for brand, you will get many opinions no matter where you go. I prefer AMSOIL and WIX filters while many here are happy with Pennzoil ultra platinum (PUP for short).
Bottom line is use whatever synthetic oil you want and use a quality filter and you will have no issues.

what do you guys recommend for the first oil change millage. I am combined city and hwy and take it reasonably easy. At least for now. I am 1250 miles. old school we changed the oil at around 1500 miles or so as a break in oil change. With todays newer better oils i am not sure. first new vehicle for me since 1973. lots of low millage used in-between but now a new vehicle and want to do it right

I did mine at around 4900 I believe. I think I had 40% left on the oil life gauge.

If you get those coupons that I keep receiving from dealers, like the 3 for $70 (to be used within 2 years, semi-synthetic, and an extra $3 for the 1 more quart of oil for the hemi), then you can “overmaintain” without straining the budget.

If you are an “oil snob” then the fancier synthetics will certainly go longer between changes. By the way, WalMart has 5 quart containers of various brands/qualities of oils for very good prices in case you like doing it yourself. Here’s 3 examples for pricing, follow your manual for correct viscosities, but if you have another ride that takes something else...

Welcome aboard.
For when you want to do some "binge" reading on oil.

Just in case you don't have a tonneau yet and looking to buy one.

In case you want more "reverse light".

You may want to let the dealer do your first oil change, many owners are reporting that the factory oil filters were installed by gorillas on the hemi trucks.

As others have pointed out every one of your questions is answered in the owners manual, it's up to you whether to follow it or not. There is no recommendation in the OM to change the factory fill early but if it makes you feel better to change it early then by all means do it. You'll see early change mileage numbers recommended all over the place, 500, 1000, 1500, just pick one and move on because it really doesn't matter.

As for interval FCA recommends following the OLM and not exceeding 10K or one year. You can follow the OLM or pick a random mileage number like 3K, 5K, 7.5K or anything you want under 10K and change it then, whatever helps you sleep at night.

FCA doesn't recommend or require synthetic be used in the 5.7L, they only recommend 5W-20 that meets Chrysler Material Standard MS-6395. Virtually all 5W-20 oils from the major manufacturers meet MS-6395 except Mobil1. Undoubtedly Mobil1 is good enough to pass the MS-6395 requirements but I've read speculation that SOPUS won't allow Mobil1 to go through the testing process in order to eliminate the competition it would give their Pennzoil Platinum and Ultra Platinum line. Makes good business sense since Pennzoil is the factory fill and service fill at most FCA dealerships.

With the tougher requirements to meet API SP conventional or "dino" 5W-20 has pretty much become a thing of the past. Apparently straight Group II based conventional oils cannot pass the testing so the companies have to add some synthetic base stock in order to pass so they're labelled as synthetic blend or semi synthetic. The percentage of synthetic is irrelevant, all that matters is that it meets API SP, and MS-6395 in the case of the 5.7L. Some older SN and SN+ conventional oils are probably still available at some retailers but most have been replaced by the newer SP/GF-6A.

Appreciate the above. While far too technical for me, I just let the dealer put in what they have in bulk and if in doubt as to the interval, or just wanting some of their free coffee and a truck wash, I just drop in...

The mailed coupons I referred to make it ridiculously easy. The previous mailing was 4 changes for $99, then yesterday comes 3 changes for $70. I can’t even use 4 changes in 2 years much less 7 changes in 2 years...

Free coffee is always good!
