New AC Question

Good afternoon. I'm the owner of a new 2019 Ram 3500 Longhorn. Great truck with ONE small exception. On most starts, when it's hot outside, the AC will come on, blow cold for a minute or so, then just completely stop for just under two minutes. It will then resume as if nothing had happened. Pushing buttons or changing temps when it's in "pause" doesn't do anything.

Has anyone else seen this issue? I haven't had time to get into the dealer yet (bought it out of state on Friday and just got home).

Thanks!

There are TONS of threads about "poor" A/C performance out of the DT trucks, however, your particular issue doesn't sound like the same thing, so don't get caught up in those. Plus you have a Heavy Duty Ram, which may or may not have the same A/C system, and could very well be closer to the 4th gens in operation. Best thing to do is take it in and show the service department what's going on. Please report back if you can!

Welcome to the forums, and congrats on the truck! This particular forum is mainly focused on the 5th Gen DT half ton trucks, you may find more relevant content for your truck over at HDRams.com, the sister site to this one focused on Heavy Duty Rams. Not trying to kick you out of here at all, just saying you may find the content there more useful and focused on your truck, compared to here.

Thanks, I will let you know. I didn't catch that on the 1500 centered discussion, since the site is titled "5th Gen Rams" and you DO have a 5th Gen HD section on the page. This forum is also much more active than the HDRams forum.

The HD "5th" gens are really more like a 4.5 gen, and came out later than the DT half tons, so not too many people have them yet. You don't have to choose one site over the other, just thought I'd offer the HDRams site as a suggestion. If you find what you're looking for here, that's all good too.

Warweasle, I've had a 2019 Longhorn 1500 for almost a month and my A/C system done the same exact thing twice. Both times the truck has sat in 90 degree weather for several hours. The last time it did it was a week ago. I've held off having the dealer look at it because there's a very good chance they won't be able to replicate the problem. If it starts doing it alot more often, it'll definitely go back. Let us know if you find out what's causing it. Thanks

I've had the exact same issue twice now.....it just occurred this afternoon. I've noticed that the idle will start surging a couple hundred RPM's when this seems to happen. I've had my truck about 3 weeks now and I too have yet to go to the dealer because I'm doubtful they will be able to replicate it at that exact time.

I've had this happen 3 times in my 2 week old truck. I always run the climate control on auto, when it shuts down I've been able to get it going again by turning the auto climate off then back on. I also noticed it happens when coming to a complete stop shortly after starting driving.

Hey all,

We certainly understand why this would be concerning. Please let us know via private message if you decide to have your dealer look into this. We would like to have this documented and have a case escalated in your behalf so a Case Specialist can work with your dealer to help find a potential solution.

I think a lot of these A/C issues are part & parcel to having the auto climate control system and associated computer involvement. Glad I don't have it....just have the old style rotary knob A/C and no problems so far (knock wood).

I had the auto climate control on my 12 & 16 with no issues. I hope they get it figured out quickly. It's hot here in TX!

[UPDATE] Upon diagnosis, the dealership found that there was a short in the blower motor. The part is on backorder, but they are trying to put a rush on it. We'll see how that goes

I do plan on going by the dealer, I just don't look forward to it because the issues I'm experiencing, including this one are not all able to be replicated at any given time....they are usually random. So that is never fun trying to deal with those at the dealer and I really don't want to leave my truck overnight when I know they probably won't be able to replicate when they do decide to try.

[UPDATE to the UPDATE] With the assistance of @RamCares , the dealer found that the fault was a broken clip on the Power Distribution Center (PDC). This was causing an intermittent connection. The dealer ordered me a new PDC, but it's back ordered until like mid August. In the meantime, they apparently jerry rigged a fix, since my AC works and I'm not dying in the Texas summer heat.

Great to hear.

As a side note, I can't say your username in my head without saying it in Pauly Shore's voice...
