Jerry Can fill issues

I’m curious if anyone else has encountered this issue and has a good recommendation for fuel spouts:

I have 3 gal rotopax fuel cans with the epa designed locking fill spout. I have had to use it a couple times while out in the bush and realized since the 5th gen ram (and a number of other cars and trucks) have a spring loaded trap door fuel filler instead of a cap. Normally when filling at a pump, the nozzle opens this first trap door and also a second one further down the filler. The issue I am having is that the spout from the rotopax fuel tank is not long enough to open this second door and as a result, each time I try to fill up, it always spills. Since the locking epa spout has a spring loaded valve that needs to be pressed against the lip of the fuel filler, it can’t reach far enough.

I plan to swap out the spouts with a self venting and non-lock spout, which will be easier to fill with. Curious if anyone has had this issue and if they fixed it with a specific fuel spout for their Jerry cans.

Why aren't you using the funnel that comes with your truck (under the front seat) to fill the tank? This funnel is specially designed to open the gates in the neck.

As a follow up, the funnel that comes under the seat is the only way you can fill up your tank w/ a jerry can. I have used my cans a bunch w/ this and it's the only way it works. I'd suggest going to the dealer or on ebay and purchasing one as a backup and just shove in your glove compartment. Also, the EZ-POUR spout replacement is a gamechanger. I've never used a rotopax as I use the standard jerry cans, but these spouts are pretty amazing.

get rid of that EPA spout and use the yellow "water" spout instead. Be sure to also buy spare rubber gaskets that go around the spout since the one that comes with the yellow spout WILL go bad and start leaking, especially if you external mount the rotopax.

I use a jiggle hose siphon to fill the truck quite easily. I place the gas jug up on my bed cover and slide the siphon hose a few inches in the trucks fill up tube the jiggle the hose to get the fuel flowing.
Much easier then holding the 6 gallon jugs up to a funnel.

The funnel is a good suggestion! I know it's not Rotopax, however, I've been filling my truck with Wavian fuel (gasoline) cans with the EPA spout with no problems, and have not had to use the supplied funnel. It's a slow process, but it does not spill.

I had no idea there wa s funnel under the seat. Seems to fit well, but kind of small. Do you just pour the gas from the can into that? Directly Without a spout? I have used the Wavian flexible long neck spout and it works, plus they fit the metal Wavian can better. I’ve only used it once, but it worked. I dislike the ones included with the can.

You use it like a regular tank.
I wouldn't recommend pouring from the gas can without a spout unless you are a damn good aim.

I read mine, but it seems actually opening up the owners manual takes too long. Most find it easier to just as on the internet. They would be surprised the amount of this you learn from the owners manual about your vehicle.

First time I saw that I thought it was a guide for the handle thru the bumper to lower the spare tire………then I read the owners manual.

To be fair it was only my second day owning the truck and I was lowering my spare to allow room to change out the exhaust.

I have never had a problem adding fuel with a normal jerrycan and it's normal spout. I use a flexible one so it gets far enough down there to open both flaps.

Yep. Whenever anyone I know says they bought a new car, I suggest they bring the owner's manual in and leave it in the bathroom and read a few pages whenever they're in there. They don't have to remember everything, it's enough to have that vague sense they have read about it before, so they know to go look it up.
