Fingers Crossed...Brake Squeal Resolved

Mine has just begun to squeal in the morning or after sitting all day at work for the first few applications. After I have applied the brakes a few times they are quiet the rest of the time I drive until it sits like I said overnight, or all day at work without moving. Will save this for future when they get to the point I can't take it no more and make certain the upgraded pad is used.

Update: After nearly 1,000 miles with the new pads, still zero squealing. I liked the truck a lot before, but love it now.

I know that feel, the truck was great but the squeal made it sound like you were driving a dump truck. It's perfect now that the brakes are silent! Loving this truck!

Thank you for this post. Just passed 900 miles and all of sudden I hear the breaks starting to squeal. The first 900 miles were quiet. Not today. I will try to get it into the dealer ASAP (and will have this post handy when the look at me funny). Should I be asking them to replace just the pads? Or should they be replacing the pads and rotors? Resurfacing?

I think (praying and crossing fingers) that the brake squeal on my truck has been resolved, once and for all, after 4 times to the dealer.

I had the same brake squealing that A LOT of people have been complaining about. Typically happened with light press of the brake going between 45-70 mph, but there was also plenty of other times it made noise outside those conditions. For whatever reason mine seemed to be the loudest the hotter and dryer it was outside.

The first trip to the dealership there was a lot of brake dust so they just cleaned the rotors and pads, and bedded the brakes. They drove it, but didn't hear the sound after that. Naturally, on my way home they started squealing.

The second trip to the dealership they resurfaced the rotors and scuffed up the pads to get rid of any glazing, and bedded them again. Again when they drove it afterwards they said they didn't hear any noise. However, the brakes squealed on the way home from the dealership.

The third trip to the dealership they were squealing loud, but they thought it was the rear brakes. They got Ram to send new rotors and pads to replace the rear brakes. They bedded the brakes, didn't hear any noise, but again I heard the noise on my drive home.

I always thought the sound was from the front passenger brake, but a friend thought it was the rear, so when they thought it was the rear, I assumed they knew what they were talking about. Once the sound continued after the rears were replaced, I pushed them to replace the front pads and rotors.

I saw on this site and others that there were new brake pads that Ram was starting to use, so I showed the picture of the difference in pads to the service department. They were unaware of the change in pads, so they contacted Ram and they sent them new rotors and pads for the front.

They were replaced on Friday, and so far no noise. I've driven several places where they would squeal almost 100% of the time, and no noise. I have less than 100 miles on them, so time will tell, but the more I drive with them the more confident I get that the new pads/rotors have resolved the issue.

For those that have the noise, don't let the dealer tell you it's normal. I know some brake noise is normal, but this noise was not normal. I've attached the picture that I got from this site that I showed my service department (thank you for whoever originally posted it).

Mine has been at the dealership since last Friday. According to the service advisor the new pads are in Ohio, hoping to have it back shortly.

I’m still not certain why it took a week, something about a star case and approval for the pads.. But picked it up after both sets being replaced and all is quiet!!

Something new and different from the other brake squeal complaints.

A week or so ago after the temps dropped into the 20s and 30s I started to hear a loud howl when braking. This only occurs when backing out of my driveway for the first time of the day, or after the vehicle has sat for at least six hours. If I drive a few hundred yards, stop, and back up, the noise is not repeated.

There is no squeal or howl when going forward. Ever.

I've noticed lately that after departing the vehicle, within a matter of minutes I can hear what I believe to be electric motors coming from the rear brakes. I assumed this was the electric parking brakes engaging, but when I checked the settings today the Auto Parking Brake feature was not selected.

Any ideas or similar experiences?

Best regards,
Dusty

I have the cold brake noise when it’s moist after sitting. It’s surface rust or something like that. Pretty loud. Not sure what to do about it. It’s kinda common on some vehicles. I work at a Honda car dealer and we get it after running our cars through the wash after they sit. I think it’s the cheap, steel in the rotors on the Ram. I have the newer updated front pads, I need to see if the noise is the rears

I took mine in today for the brake squeal (amongst other things), and apparently there is a "star" case open for this issue and they have to replace the calipers (apparently back-order too). I'll find out more once at the garage.

I was told by the dealership that they have to replace the calipers and pads - apparently there's no part number for the new calipers yet, so they're going to wait and change the pads and calipers once the new parts crystalise.

Same howling as I back out of the garage for just the fisrt time in the morning - every morning (glad to know I'm not alone) ... have had the pads replaced for brake squeal. Howling noise began as soon as daily temp dropped below freezing. Have spoken with the dealer but they claimed no knowledge of issue. My plan is to park it at the dealer one night and go back there in the morning so my service advisor or mechanic can back it up and listen. My concern is that the manufacturer gets real fussy about brake warranty after 12,000 miles. I have about 8,500 on my truck and need to get this noise fixed in the next 3,500!

I brought mine into the dealer yesterday for the rear brake pads squealing in reverse. Technician told me that Ram is aware of it but has told the dealers to not replace anything at this time as they are currently working on a TSB to fix the problem. Sounds like this is a work in progress. They will notify me when an updated TSB comes out. Sounds like it might not be too far off.

I also have this noise when backing up the cold truck. I'm at 2k miles. Pretty loud sometimes.

Same exact problem. Taking mine to my dealer today to see what they say.

Add me to the list of rear brake noise (mine is groaning sounding almost) when backing up in the morning now that temps have dropped. Hoping this TSB comes out and then I will inquire to dealer.

Mine goes in tomorrow to have this looked at. I messaged RamCares about the issue and they sent me a STAR case number, which I gave the dealer for tomorrow. RamCares thought it may apply to my situation and it only addresses the front brakes. They said they are working on one for the rear brakes.

Gents this might be completely off base, but since someone mentioned an odd electric motor sound I thought I would bring up TSB 08-116-18... here’s the description, see if this matches with anyone’s experience and mention the TSB to service if so. Worth a post even though this TSB doesn’t talk about brake squeal...

Drove it to the dealer Friday, Nov. 30th, for the brake squealing and the upper glove box light that won't turn off. They couldn't replicate the brake squealing on Friday, my guess was due to the rain and moisture in the air. They held the truck over the weekend and gave me a Wrangler to drive. Called me Monday, said they were able to replicate the break squeal and will be replacing the upper glove box. Parts are on order so I picked up my truck and will be taking it back once they arrive. They will replace the front calipers and pads.

Sound like this?
