So I was driving to work this morning, about 50 mph, and out of nowhere there was a loud glass explosion. It scared the **** out of me:eek:. I pulled over to inspect my truck and the first half of the sunroof was shattered. Good thing I had the screen completely closed. But it’s a bummer, my limited just has 1000 miles on it. Drove it to the local dealership and was told it normally takes a day or two for Chrysler to respond on warranty.

Has this happened to anyone?

No but it is really concerning to me that you got an actual hole in the glass... Isn't safety glass supposed to shatter but stay as one piece?

No, that's just the windshield, the rest of the safety glass is supposed to shatter in to tiny shards instead of large impaling chunks.

Ok Thx... However imho that's acceptable for rear windows or windows on the side but a window that has the potential to fall on the driver? Rather concerning?

It's especially important for it to break into small, dull pieces if it's going to fall on the driver. It's also a point of egress if the truck ends up on it's side and if it were laminated glass you would have to push the entire piece out of the frame rather than just shatter it.

Wow thats horrible.

Ok, something like this is going to need extra details and variables please...

Temp
Humidity
Your set climate control temp
How often you use it/when you used it last
Whats the usual terrain you drive on, i.e. bumpy holes, smooth as glass, etc.

None of this is to infer any of your fault, just data for others in perhaps similar conditions, while also completely aware NONE of these could even play a part in the end.

You know, in 2003 I had a piece of an airline fall directly into my Audis windshield, smack in middle, couldnt get any better if you were trying with a computer from a military installation. I was driving under BWI airport runway traffic, literally along the fencelines on the highway. 8 month pregnant wife in passenger seat.

Wow, did that cause spontaneous birth?

Sorry that happened! Any chance it was an impact from something?

I just made the note that I need to add duct tape and a small tarp to my "just in case" stash so I can keep driving with a broken sunroof.
Hey, maybe a hat to keep the glass sprinkles out of my eyes?

I had this happen a few years ago to me but after investigation, a piece of coal sludge was the culprit. Scared the **** out of me and thankfully I also had my cover closed. It came from a truck going in the opposite direction and he did not have his load adequately secured/covered. I'm glad you did not get hurt.

This is the reason why I didn’t want the pano sunroof it’s looks super nice but a lot of things can happen to it.

I hope everything works out for you

This is an on-going issue with sunroofs across ALL makes. NHTSA has taken the case of one brand into formal investigation, I wanna say Kia or Hyundai.

As of right now... spontaneous breakage happens and is not fully understood.

If the mfg chooses to laminate the glass, then yes. However most choose not to.

This morning was about 55 F, humidity was probably around the 70s (didn't check) and climate control temp was sent to 72. Roads are ok, not smooth nor bumpy. I don't think any of this actually makes a glass explode but I might be wrong. From what I could see, it seem as if pressure built up in the center of the glass and it exploded just like a volcano.

That's the first thing I checked for. I thought it was a rock or some other flying object but could find anything. What makes me think nothing actually hit the sunroof was the shape of the glass after it shattered, volcano shaped. Pressure built up definitely looks to be the culprit.

Were any vehicles in front of you? Were you near an overpass? I would think a possible strike could have caused it. If the glass was hit, maybe due to pressure it appeared that it exploded in the "volcanic" manner. Either way, sucks man.

Was the sunroof tinted? Have heard stories that tint could cause this (not on a2019 yet).
No, but the funny thing was that I was planning to take my truck for a tint on my sunroof today. I think the tint would have helped to keep the glass in its place and not go fly all over my bed or cars behind me.

No. Road was clear. No overpass. Leaning more toward a pressure issue, it definitely looked like a volcano shaped form.

Dealer is declining this is a warranty issue. The reason that was given to me, it "probably" got hit by something:unsure:. Probably my ***(n)(n) . But they did take time to reorder a replacement without my authorization . I really dont want take my truck to another dealer given that it started to rain since last night.

That totally sucks but I kinda figured they would say something like that.

I bet it will be an expensive fix
